“The program can’t start because cc.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” The cc.dll error means an application cannot load a file it expects, but cc.dll is not a single standard Windows component.
The filename has been used by unrelated software. It has been associated with older games using Unique Development Studio’s CC 3D engine and with TamoSoft CommView installations. That does not identify the copy on your computer. The correct repair depends on which application requested it and where Windows expected to find it.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Only one game or application fails: repair or reinstall that program first.
- The error began after an update or incomplete installation: use the program’s launcher repair or verification feature.
- The file disappeared after a security alert: inspect antivirus quarantine and confirm the original path before restoring anything.
- The application is old or 32-bit: install the correct application version and its documented prerequisites. Do not substitute a 64-bit DLL.
- The message also mentions
MSVCP*.dllorVCRUNTIME*.dll: repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime separately. - Several Windows components and unrelated applications fail: run DISM and System File Checker.
- The file is in a temporary, startup, email-download, or cracked-software folder: treat it as suspicious and scan it instead of restoring it.
- The application was modified, abandoned, or supplied by an unofficial repack: obtain a supported installer or replace the software.
1. Identify the application that owns cc.dll
Do not begin by searching for a replacement DLL. First establish which program displays the error.

Check the error window
Note the application name in the title bar and the action that triggers the message. Does it appear when starting a game, opening a utility, launching Windows, or uninstalling another program?
Also ask what changed immediately beforehand:
- The application was installed or updated
- The program was moved to another drive
- A cleanup utility removed files
- Antivirus quarantined an item
- A launcher interrupted an update
- The application was uninstalled or partially removed
If the message names an executable, search for that executable in File Explorer. Right-click it, select Open file location, then inspect the folder. A private application DLL normally belongs beside its program executable or in a vendor-specific subfolder, not in a global Windows directory.
Search for existing copies safely
Press Windows key, type cc.dll, and select Search or File Explorer results. Right-click any result, choose Open file location, then inspect the path.

A copy in System32, SysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unknown startup directory needs additional verification.
Right-click the file, select Properties, and review:
- General: confirm the path and size.
- Details: look for a product name, company, or description.
- Digital Signatures: check whether a known publisher signed it.
- Security: confirm that the file is not unusually restricted.
The absence of a signature does not prove that cc.dll is malware, but an unknown publisher and suspicious path are reasons to scan and reinstall from a trusted source.
2. Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely solution because cc.dll is supplied by the program that installed it.

Use the application’s repair option
If the application has its own launcher:
- Open the launcher.
- Select the affected game or application.
- Open its Settings, Manage, or three-dot menu.
- Choose Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or Verify integrity.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restart Windows and launch the program again.
The wording differs between launchers. The important action is to make the official launcher compare the installed files with its known-good package.
If the launcher reports that files were restored and the application starts, the repair is complete. If it repeatedly removes and redownloads cc.dll, check antivirus quarantine before trying again.
Repair from Windows Settings
For a conventional desktop application:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu, then Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings.
Reinstall from the official source
If repair fails:
- Back up the application’s settings or saved games if necessary.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or run the installer supplied by the software publisher, store, or original installation media.
- Install the version intended for your Windows architecture and the application’s supported prerequisites.
- Launch the program before copying back custom files or modifications.
Do not install a loose cc.dll into the application folder. Reinstalling the owning program supplies the matching file and any dependencies it needs.
3. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate application file, especially after an update or when an old program uses unusual packaging.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any entry that identifies the affected application or its installation path.
- Confirm the original file path and publisher before choosing Restore or Allow on device.
Restore a file only when the application came from a trusted official source and the path is the expected installation directory. If the file was unsigned, appeared in a temporary or startup directory, or came with a modified or pirated program, do not allow it blindly. Run a full scan and reinstall the application from a legitimate source.
After restoring a trusted file, use the application launcher’s Verify or Repair function. If antivirus removes the file again, investigate the detection rather than repeatedly restoring it.
4. Check whether a dependent DLL is actually missing
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cc.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found cc.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Look for additional names in the message or the application’s log. Common Visual C++ runtime names include:
Rank #3
MSVCP*.dllVCRUNTIME*.dll
If those files are named, install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft and match the package to the application. Microsoft provides separate x86, x64, and ARM64 packages:
A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 runtime, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs x64. Install both when separate applications require different architectures. Older software may require a legacy Visual C++ package listed on Microsoft’s supported-downloads page.
Do not expect Visual C++ installation to replace cc.dll itself. It addresses a missing runtime dependency, not an application file that was deleted or quarantined.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
An old game or utility may be a 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows. It may require a 32-bit cc.dll built for that specific program.
Check the application’s documentation or installer rather than guessing from the DLL filename. Do not replace a missing 32-bit file with an x64 file that has the same name.
Also avoid manually copying third-party files into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system binaries while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. These names are counterintuitive, and neither folder is a general storage location for application DLLs.
If the program is very old, try its official update or supported compatibility guidance. Compatibility mode may help some legacy applications:
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click the application executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose the Windows version recommended by the software documentation.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the application.
Do not use compatibility mode as a substitute for obtaining the correct application files.
6. Repair Windows components only when broader symptoms exist
Windows repair is less likely to fix cc.dll when only one third-party program fails. Use it when several applications show unexplained loading failures, Windows features are malfunctioning, or system files appear damaged.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retry. If it cannot repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. These commands repair Windows components; they do not download a third-party cc.dll.
Repeatedly hunting through logs and rerunning SFC or DISM can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows reported system issues, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that program owns cc.dll.
Do not use Windows Features to add a random DLL. Optional features such as legacy components should be enabled only when the application’s official documentation specifically requires them.
7. Do not register cc.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for certain OLE, ActiveX, and COM DLLs that provide a registration entry point. It is not a general repair command for private game or application runtime files.
Running this command is usually inappropriate:
regsvr32 cc.dll
An ordinary application DLL may return an error such as “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.” That does not mean Windows needs another copy or a different registration command.
Use regsvr32 only when the owning software publisher explicitly tells you to register a particular COM or ActiveX component and provides the correct file path and architecture instructions. Otherwise, repair the application that installed the DLL.

A driver reinstall is not a default fix for cc.dll. Consider graphics or chipset drivers only when the same application also crashes with display errors, hardware initialization failures, or broader graphics problems.
For a manual driver check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a clean vendor update, identify the exact hardware model and use the computer or hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Do not install a driver package merely because it mentions cc.dll.
Best Value
Finding the correct driver among many hardware models can be tedious, especially on older systems. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing which drivers it reports as outdated, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the application that owns cc.dll.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A generic cc.dll download is not a universal solution because the filename does not identify one product, publisher, version, architecture, or checksum. A downloaded file may be malicious, incompatible, incomplete, or built for an unrelated application.

It can also cause a dependency error to remain unchanged.

Prevention and escalation checklist
Before escalating the issue, confirm that you have:
- Identified the program and executable that display the error
- Recorded the expected
cc.dllpath - Used the official launcher’s verify or repair function
- Reinstalled the application from a trusted source
- Checked Windows Security Protection history
- Matched 32-bit and 64-bit application requirements
- Installed Visual C++ only when a runtime dependency is named
- Avoided copying the file into Windows system folders
- Avoided
regsvr32unless the publisher requires COM registration - Run DISM and SFC only when broader Windows corruption is plausible
If reinstalling fails repeatedly, check installer logs, available disk space, permissions, ransomware protection, controlled-folder access, antivirus history, and whether application data in the user profile is corrupted. For obsolete or modified software, seek a supported release or replace it rather than forcing an unknown DLL into the installation.
FAQ
Is cc.dll a Windows system file?
No universal Windows component is identified by this filename. cc.dll is associated with particular third-party applications, and different programs can use unrelated files with the same name.
Should I download cc.dll from the Internet?
No. Obtain it through the official installer or launcher for the application that requires it. A generic download can contain the wrong version, wrong architecture, or malicious code.
Does installing Visual C++ fix cc.dll?
Only when the application separately reports a missing Visual C++ dependency such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. It does not replace an application-specific cc.dll.
Should I put cc.dll in System32?
No. Restore the file to the application directory through its official repair or reinstall process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy does Windows say a module could not be found when cc.dll exists?
A dependency required by cc.dll may be missing, blocked, or the wrong architecture. Check the complete error message, application prerequisites, antivirus history, and 32-bit versus 64-bit requirements.
Can regsvr32 repair cc.dll?
Usually not. It applies to DLLs designed for COM or ActiveX registration, not ordinary private application libraries.
