Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
If cddbcontrolroxio.dll is missing, Windows is usually trying to start an older Roxio application that depends on Gracenote’s CDDBControl component. Before changing files, note:
- Which program shows the error: record the exact application name and executable, or take a screenshot of the dialog.
- When the error appears: during Windows startup, when opening Roxio, while importing music, or when launching another program.
- The complete message: common wording includes “cddbcontrolroxio.dll was not found,” “is missing,” “could not be loaded,” or “the specified module could not be found.”
- Recent changes: check whether Roxio was partially uninstalled, cleanup software was run, a backup was restored, or antivirus software quarantined a file.
- Windows architecture: determine whether you are running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows. This is important because public file records identify this legacy DLL as a Win32 component used by older software.
- The Roxio edition: Easy DVD Copy, Roxio Easy Media Creator, VideoWave, and other Roxio products may have different installers and updates.
The safest repair is to restore the complete Roxio installation that originally supplied the file. Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL.

What cddbcontrolroxio.dll is
cddbcontrolroxio.dll is identified as CDDBControl Core Module (Roxio), a third-party application component associated with Gracenote, formerly known as CDDB, Inc. It is not a Windows system file, Microsoft runtime, device driver, or normal Windows component.
The file appears in records for legacy Roxio software, including Easy DVD Copy, Roxio Easy Media Creator, and VideoWave. An association with a particular Roxio release does not prove that it was used by every edition, so identify the installed product before applying an update or copying anything.

- 2. INSTALL, REINSTALL & REPAIR Provides access to installation and recovery options for startup failures, boot errors, system crashes, failed updates, system repair and reinstallation. Results depend on the condition of the computer and the cause of the problem.
- 3. READY-TO-USE BOOTABLE USB Reusable installation and recovery media that helps eliminate the need to download large system files or create bootable media yourself. Insert the USB drive, open the computer’s boot menu and select the appropriate installation or recovery option.
- 4. HELP KEEP OLDER PCS USEFUL Refresh, reinstall or maintain a compatible older computer before deciding whether replacement is necessary. Suitable for home computers, office workstations, PC enthusiasts and technicians who regularly work with supported systems.
- 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
The exact file version, size, installation folder, exports, dependencies, and digital signature should not be assumed from an online file listing. Older applications may install their DLLs beside the program executable, in a product-specific folder, or through Windows’ handling of 32-bit applications. A historical listing in a Windows system folder does not mean that manually placing the file there is correct.
Fix 1: Repair the installed Roxio program
This is the fastest and most likely solution when the program is still installed.
Windows 11
- Close the error dialog and all Roxio programs.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Roxio, Easy DVD Copy, Easy Media Creator, or VideoWave.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the matching entry.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair if available.
- Follow the installer prompts and allow it to restore the application files.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same program that originally displayed the error.
Windows 10
- Right-click Start and select Apps and Features.
- Find the Roxio product in the list.
- Select it and choose Modify, Change, or Repair.
- Complete the repair wizard.
- Restart the computer and test the application again.
If the repair completes but the same message returns, the installer may itself be damaged or the file may have been removed after installation. Continue with a complete reinstall rather than repeatedly attempting the same repair.

Look for the original installation disc, a legitimate installer you previously purchased or downloaded, or a backup of the application’s installation media. Use the installer for the exact Roxio product and edition.
Avoid using an installer for a similar-sounding product. Easy DVD Copy, Easy Media Creator, and VideoWave are not interchangeable simply because they are all associated with Roxio.
After reinstalling:
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Roxio program directly from its Start menu shortcut.
- Confirm whether it launches before opening the file or project that previously caused the failure.
- Apply only an update intended for that exact product and edition.
If the application came from a launcher or software suite with Verify, Repair files, or Scan and repair, use that feature before replacing individual files.
Fix 2: Reinstall Roxio from legitimate media
A full reinstall is appropriate when the repair option is unavailable, the installation is incomplete, or the error began after uninstalling another Roxio component.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps and Features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected Roxio product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Insert the original disc or mount the legitimate installer you own.
- Run the setup program.
- If Windows asks for permission, select Yes.
- Install the same edition that originally used the application.
- Restart again.
- Test the program before installing unrelated utilities or copying files into Windows folders.
If the installer offers a compatibility update, confirm that it applies to your exact edition. A product-specific update for one Easy DVD Copy release should not be applied to a different release merely because the names are similar.
If the original installer is unavailable, replacing the obsolete application with supported software may be safer than sourcing an isolated legacy DLL.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and cleanup history
Security software and system-cleanup utilities can remove or isolate an old DLL. A quarantine event does not automatically prove that the file was malicious, but restoring an unknown copy without checking its source is unsafe.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any item referring to the Roxio installation folder or the affected executable.
- If the item clearly belongs to your legitimate Roxio installation, follow Windows Security’s restore or allow instructions.
- Run a full scan after restoration.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to download a DLL. If the same file is repeatedly quarantined, stop and investigate the product installer, the file’s location, and the detection details.

Also check third-party antivirus history and any cleanup application that was recently run. If cleanup software removed the file, reinstall the parent Roxio program instead of restoring a loose copy from an archive.
Fix 4: Confirm that the application and DLL architecture match
Legacy Roxio software is commonly encountered as a 32-bit application. A 32-bit program cannot load a 64-bit replacement for one of its components.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Look at System type.
- Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
On Windows 10, open Settings > System > About and inspect the same field.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but it uses separate handling for 32-bit and 64-bit program files. Windows may redirect certain system-folder accesses for 32-bit processes. Therefore, manually placing a file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not a reliable repair.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The correct location is determined by the application installer. Repair or reinstall Roxio so the installer places the component where that particular program expects it.
A mismatch may produce an error such as:
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
- “The file is not designed to run on Windows.”
- An entry-point error.
- A message saying that the specified module could not be found.
These messages can indicate a damaged or incompatible binary, an architecture mismatch, or a missing dependency. They do not prove that copying another DLL into a Windows folder will help.
Fix 5: Check whether a dependency, not the named DLL, is missing
Windows can report that a module could not be found even when cddbcontrolroxio.dll is present. The missing module may be a dependency that the Roxio DLL needs.
First, inspect the application folder:
- Right-click the Roxio shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for
cddbcontrolroxio.dlland other files installed beside the program. - Do not rename, move, or replace files at this stage.
If the DLL is present but the application still fails, reinstall Roxio to restore its complete dependency set. Do not blindly install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET. None of those packages is identified as the source of this Roxio-specific component. Install a runtime only when the error names that runtime or the legitimate application documentation requires it.

Fix 6: Test compatibility settings for the legacy application
Older disc-authoring and media applications may not work correctly on current Windows versions even after their files are restored.

- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if it matches the software’s documented requirements.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application and test it.
You can also select Run this program as an administrator temporarily for testing. If this changes the result, the problem may involve permissions on the application folder rather than a missing DLL. Do not use administrator mode as a substitute for reinstalling damaged software.
If compatibility settings do not help, check the exact Roxio product requirements and use the appropriate older Windows environment when necessary. A newly downloaded DLL will not make unsupported disc-authoring software reliable.

Fix 7: Check the optical drive and related drivers only when relevant
A missing cddbcontrolroxio.dll error is normally an application-installation problem, not a Device Manager problem. Use Device Manager only if Roxio also cannot detect an optical drive, reports a driver error, or fails while reading a disc.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected drive and choose Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Select Driver and then Update Driver if an update is genuinely available.
- Restart Windows and test the drive again.
Do not remove a working drive or install a generic driver simply because the DLL error appears. Repair the Roxio application first.
When manual driver hunting means checking several hardware vendors and guessing which package is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies what it found, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Roxio application remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 8: Run Windows component repair as a secondary check
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They normally will not recreate a vendor DLL installed by Roxio, so use them when other Windows files or features are also failing, not as the first response to this error.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Roxio application again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If it reports that it could not repair everything, run the DISM command again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the Roxio error remains unchanged, return to repairing or reinstalling the Roxio product.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and confusing. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the Roxio program remains the definitive fix for this file.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for installing or repairing every DLL.
There is no established evidence that cddbcontrolroxio.dll is an ActiveX control or self-registering COM server. Running a command such as this is therefore not a recommended first step:
regsvr32 cddbcontrolroxio.dll
If the command reports that an entry point is missing, that does not repair the file. If it reports an architecture error, it may further confirm that the wrong regsvr32 or wrong binary was used. Repair the parent application instead.
Why downloading the DLL alone is risky
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or modified binaries.
- A file from the wrong Roxio release.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A file with missing dependencies.
- A binary that does not match the application’s expected location.
- A replacement that hides the original installation damage.
A checksum or file description from an unofficial inventory is not proof that a downloaded file is authentic or safe. No official standalone download for this DLL has been established here.
The safe sources are the original Roxio installation disc, a legitimate installer you own, an official product update that matches the exact edition, or a repair option built into the application’s installer. Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64 as a first-line fix.

Frequently asked questions
Is cddbcontrolroxio.dll a Windows file?
No. Available file records identify it as a third-party Gracenote component used by legacy Roxio software.
Should I put cddbcontrolroxio.dll in System32?
No. The correct location depends on the Roxio installer and the application’s architecture. Copying it into a Windows system folder can create version, permission, and security problems.
Will installing Visual C++ fix this error?
Not normally. This DLL belongs to the Roxio installation. Install a runtime only when the error specifically identifies it as missing or the legitimate application requirements call for it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I register the file with regsvr32?
Do not do so by default. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose registration entry points, and there is no established evidence here that this Roxio component requires registration.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file is present?
A dependency of the named DLL may be missing, incompatible, or blocked. Reinstall the complete Roxio product rather than replacing only the visible file.
What if Roxio no longer appears in Installed apps?
Use the original disc, a legitimate owned installer, or a backup. If none is available, replacing the obsolete application may be safer than obtaining an isolated DLL.
What is the most likely fix?
Identify the program that displays the message, then repair or reinstall that exact Roxio product from legitimate installation media. Check antivirus quarantine and architecture only after confirming which application is affected.
