Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →cddriver.dll is a missing or failed-load file associated with Colortron Device Driver. It is not verified as a Windows component, Microsoft runtime, or standard file that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32.
Before changing anything, record:
- Which application shows the error: Does it happen with an old imaging, color-management, hardware, or device utility?
- When it happens: During Windows startup, application startup, installation, or device access?
- Where the file is expected: Is there a copy in the application’s own folder, a driver folder, quarantine, or an unrelated temporary directory?
- Which architecture is involved: Public file metadata identifies
cddriver.dllsamples as 32-bit. A 32-bit program may need a 32-bit copy even when Windows itself is 64-bit. - What the complete message says: “The specified module could not be found” can mean that another dependency required by
cddriver.dllis missing.
The safest repair is to restore the original application or hardware package that requested the file. Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL or copying one into System32.
What is cddriver.dll?
Public file metadata describes cddriver.dll as Colortron Device Driver, published by Light Source Computer Images, Inc. The available records identify a 32-bit Win32 DLL. An indexed record reports version 2.1.0.1007 and a file size of 96,768 bytes, but those values describe a particular historical sample rather than every release.
That information points to an old Colortron-related driver or application component. It does not identify the exact program installed on your computer. Another legacy application could have bundled a similarly named file, or the error could be naming a dependency loaded by an older program.

There is no verified evidence that cddriver.dll ships with Windows. It is not a reason to replace files in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Is cddriver.dll a virus?
The filename alone does not answer that question. A public malware-analysis record associates one sample named CDDRIVER.DLL with the detection Adware.Amonetize, observed under a saiproduction suite1 path. That does not prove every historical Colortron copy is malicious, but it means an unexpected copy deserves inspection rather than automatic restoration.
Check the file’s:
- Full path
- Digital signature
- Publisher metadata
- Antivirus result
- Relationship to the application that requested it
A copy inside the original application directory may be legitimate. A copy in a temporary folder, Downloads, a random startup directory, or an unrelated system location is more suspicious.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the application that reports the error
This is the most likely fix when the message appears as an old program starts.
Find the requesting program
- Write down the application name shown in the error window.
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and note the path in Target.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
- Look in the application folder for
cddriver.dll. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs.
If the file is absent, do not search the entire internet for a replacement. Check how the application was originally installed:
- Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11
- Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10
- Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features
- Original installation media
- A known-good backup of the complete application directory
- Support from the current owner or publisher of the application
Repair the parent application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If there is no Repair option:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify if offered.
- Complete the installer and restart Windows.
If repair fails, uninstall the application, restart, and reinstall it from the original installer or publisher-supported media. Reinstall the complete application rather than copying only cddriver.dll. Older programs commonly depend on several files, registry entries, configuration files, and device components.
How to tell whether this worked
The fix worked if:
- The application opens without the
cddriver.dllmessage. - The related device or color-management feature works.
- Windows does not immediately quarantine the restored file.
- The application folder contains the complete installation rather than one manually copied DLL.
If the same error returns immediately after reinstalling, continue with the quarantine and architecture checks below.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine before restoring anything
Antivirus software may have removed the file after a detection, or it may have blocked an older installer during setup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries involving
cddriver.dllor the application that uses it. - Expand an entry to see its action, original location, and detection name.
Do not select Restore simply because the application says the file is missing. Restore only when all of these are true:

Please verify your device type before purchasing
- You recognize the parent application.
- The original path is the application’s expected installation folder.
- The file came from the original installer or a verified backup.
- Its publisher and signature are consistent with the application.
- A current security scan does not identify it as malicious.
If Windows Security identifies the file as malware, leave it quarantined. Uninstall and reinstall the parent application from a trusted source instead. If the detection returns after every reinstall, run a full scan and investigate whether the installer, backup, or application itself has been compromised.
To run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
An unknown copy should remain quarantined while you investigate. Never whitelist a file only because its name matches an old legitimate DLL.
Fix 3: Confirm that the program and DLL architecture match
Available file records identify cddriver.dll as a 32-bit DLL. This matters because a 32-bit application generally needs a 32-bit version of its supporting DLL, even on 64-bit Windows.
Do not infer the DLL’s architecture from your Windows edition:
System32contains 64-bit system binaries on most 64-bit Windows installations.SysWOW64contains 32-bit Windows compatibility binaries.- Neither folder is an appropriate general-purpose destination for this third-party file.
To check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows+I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Review System type.
To check the application, open Task Manager while it is running:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if available.
- Check whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Some older versions of Task Manager show *32 beside 32-bit processes instead.
If the application is 32-bit and the only replacement you found is described as x64, do not use it. The available detailed records point to a 32-bit file, and an unverified claim of an x64 build should not be treated as proof of authenticity.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the related hardware driver
The filename is described as a device driver component, but the error may come from a legacy application rather than a current Windows device driver. Use Device Manager when the error occurs while accessing a physical device or after a driver update.
Update the device through Device Manager
- Press Windows+X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Test the application or device.
If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, check the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel for a driver that explicitly supports your Windows version. Do not install a package merely because its name contains cddriver.dll.
Reinstall the device
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the manufacturer-supported driver.
- Restart again and test the device.
Do not remove an unknown device unless you have identified it and have a recovery path. If the issue started immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
Manually comparing drivers across hardware categories can mean hunting through many versions and guessing which package is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. For a file tied to a particular legacy application, reinstalling that application remains the definitive repair.
Fix 5: Check whether another dependency is missing
Windows may display “The specified module could not be found” even when cddriver.dll exists. The missing item can be another DLL that cddriver.dll needs.
Use the complete error and application logs to determine whether another filename is listed. Also check the application’s installer log if one exists. A dependency-inspection utility can show which imports fail, but use a reputable diagnostic source and do not download replacement files from an unverified archive.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Reinstalling the parent application is still the safest dependency repair because it restores the expected group of files together. If the application’s documentation explicitly names a prerequisite, install that prerequisite from its official publisher.
Do not assume that Visual C++ Redistributables are the answer because the failing file ends in .dll. They are relevant only when the error, installer, or application documentation identifies a Microsoft runtime dependency.
Fix 6: Run DISM and System File Checker for Windows corruption
DISM and SFC do not normally restore a third-party cddriver.dll. They are useful when Windows itself is damaged, Windows Update is failing, or several built-in components are malfunctioning.
Install pending Windows updates and restart first. Then:

- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. SFC repairs protected Windows system files; it does not serve as a download source for this driver DLL.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which component changed makes troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows repair issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair through the full version is optional. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the legacy application that owns cddriver.dll.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove the third-party DLL is present or correct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Use System Restore if the failure is recent
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after an application installation, driver change, update, or cleanup operation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Press Windows+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be affected.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Select Finish and confirm.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. After Windows restarts, test the application before reinstalling other software.
If no suitable restore point exists, restore the complete application from a known-good backup or reinstall it from its original media.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for installing missing DLLs.
There is no verified evidence that cddriver.dll is an ActiveX or COM server that requires registration. Running:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
regsvr32 pathcddriver.dll
will commonly produce an entry-point error if the DLL does not support registration. It will not restore a missing dependency, correct a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch, or repair a damaged application.
Use regsvr32 only when the software’s official documentation specifically says that this particular DLL must be registered and provides the correct architecture-specific command.

Why downloading cddriver.dll separately is unsafe
An isolated DLL download can give you:
- Malware disguised with a familiar filename
- The wrong architecture
- A different historical version
- A file with missing dependencies
- A mismatched file that causes an entry-point error
- A copy in the wrong directory
- A new security problem after replacing a quarantined file
There is no verified current Microsoft package for cddriver.dll, and no current official Light Source installer was identified for this file. The safe sources are the original application installer, recovery media, a verified backup, the current software owner, or the hardware manufacturer’s supported driver package.
Never copy an unverified DLL into System32 or SysWOW64.
FAQ
Is cddriver.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence supports that conclusion. It is identified in public metadata as Colortron Device Driver and is associated with Light Source Computer Images, Inc.
Which program installed cddriver.dll?
The filename alone cannot identify the exact program. Start with the application named in the error, then inspect its installation directory and installed-program entry.
Should I reinstall Visual C++ Redistributables?
Only if the full error or application documentation identifies a missing Microsoft runtime dependency. Visual C++ is not a documented direct fix for cddriver.dll.
Should I place the file in System32?
No. A 32-bit application may need a 32-bit DLL in its own application directory, and an unverified copy in a Windows directory can create conflicts or security risks.
Will SFC restore cddriver.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while cddriver.dll is associated with third-party legacy software.
What if the file keeps disappearing after reinstalling?
Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history, then scan the system. Also verify that the application is installed in a stable location and that the restored file has trustworthy provenance.
What if the program still fails after reinstalling?
Read the full loader message for another missing dependency, confirm whether the application is 32-bit, and check whether its old driver or hardware interface is compatible with your version of Windows. If the software is no longer supported, use a supported replacement or contact the current owner.
The correct repair for cddriver.dll is usually not a standalone DLL download. Identify the requesting application, restore its complete installation from a trusted source, and treat unexpected copies as a security question before restoring them.
