The cdlmso.dll error may say “The program can’t start because cdlmso.dll is missing from your computer,” “This application failed to start because cdlmso.dll was not found,” or “The specified module could not be found.” cdlmso.dll is a Microsoft Office component, so the safest fix is to repair the Office installation that reports the error rather than download an individual DLL.
The 60-second answer
- Note the exact Office program showing the error.
- Open Control Panel and repair that Microsoft Office installation.
- If repair requests source files, provide the original Office CD, network installation point, or other licensed Microsoft installation media.
- If repair fails, uninstall and reinstall the same Office edition.
- Do not copy
cdlmso.dllintoSystem32orSysWOW64. - Do not run
regsvr32against it unless Microsoft or the application vendor specifically instructs you to do so.
cdlmso.dll has the internal description Microsoft CDL and is published by Microsoft Corporation. It is an Office application file, not a normal Windows operating-system DLL.

What is cdlmso.dll?
cdlmso.dll belongs to Microsoft Office installations. Public file records associate it with Office 2007-era products, Office 2010, Office 2013 and older Office releases, including Office 2003. The file may appear in directories such as:

The exact directory depends on the Office generation and installation type. A Microsoft Q&A report, for example, shows an Office 2010 copy under an Office version directory rather than a Windows system directory. Public metadata also lists Office 2007 and later version families, including 12.0.6211.1000, 14.0.6015.1000, 15.0.4420.1017 and 15.0.4569.1501.

These version families should not be treated as interchangeable downloads. The correct file depends on the installed Office edition, language, update level and architecture.
Microsoft Office 2003 reached the end of extended support on April 9, 2014. It may still be repairable with its original media, but compatibility with current Windows versions is not guaranteed.
What the different errors mean
“cdlmso.dll is missing” or “was not found”
Windows or an Office program cannot find the file at the path expected by the installation. Common causes include:

- An incomplete Office removal
- A failed Office repair or update
- Damaged installation files
- Antivirus quarantine
- A broken migration to another computer
- A missing Office installation source
“The specified module could not be found”
This does not always mean that cdlmso.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while another library that it needs cannot be loaded. Replacing only cdlmso.dll can therefore leave the real problem untouched.
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”
This commonly indicates a corrupt, incompatible or wrong-architecture binary. It is not normally a sign that the DLL needs to be registered.
“Setup cannot continue”
Office Setup may have found a missing or damaged component. Repairing the owning Office installation is safer than downloading a replacement file.
Before repairing: identify the installation
First determine which program is failing.
- Write down the application name and the complete error message.
- Check whether the error appears when opening Word, Excel, Outlook, Visio or another Office program.
- If only one Office program fails, repair the Office installation that contains that program.
- If several Office programs fail, treat the problem as an Office-wide installation issue.
- If a non-Office application reports the error, check that program’s own repair or file-verification feature before assuming Windows or Office is responsible.
Also consider what changed immediately before the error appeared:

- Office was uninstalled or partially removed.
- Windows or Office updated.
- Antivirus software quarantined a file.
- A disk cleanup removed application files.
- Office was moved to another computer.
- A hard-drive or profile problem occurred.
- A new Office generation was installed beside an older one.
If multiple Office versions are installed, repair the copy that launches the failing program. Do not replace a file in one Office directory with a file from another.
Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Office from Control Panel
This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged cdlmso.dll.

Office 2010 and similar MSI installations
- Close every Office program.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select Microsoft Office in the installed-programs list.
- Click Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows when the repair completes.
- Open the program that previously displayed the error.
For some installations, the entry may include the complete edition name, such as Microsoft Office Professional or Microsoft Office Home and Business.
Office 2003
Microsoft’s documented Office 2003 path is:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Add or Remove Programs.
- Select Microsoft Office.
- Click Change.
- Choose Detect and Repair.
- Follow the prompts.
- Insert the Office installation CD if requested.
- Restart Windows and test Office again.
How to tell whether repair worked
Repair succeeded if:
- The Office program opens without the
cdlmso.dllmessage. - The file is restored under the expected Office directory.
- Other Office programs no longer report related missing-component errors.
- Office Setup no longer requests the same missing file.
If repair says that it cannot find the installation source, continue to the reinstall procedure below rather than downloading the DLL separately.

Use this step when repair cannot restore the component or the Office installation is only partially present.
- Confirm the Office edition shown in Control Panel.
- Locate the original licensed CD, network installation point or Microsoft-provided installation media for that edition.
- If Office is still listed, uninstall it from Control Panel → Programs and Features or Add or Remove Programs.
- Restart Windows.
- Run Office Setup from the original media.
- Install the same edition, language and general product generation.
- Apply the available updates intended for that Office release.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the affected Office program.
Do not install a random newer cdlmso.dll because its version number looks higher. A file from Office 2010 or Office 2013 is not automatically compatible with Office 2003 or Office 2007.
If you no longer have licensed installation media, use Microsoft’s official account or support channels for the Office product you own. Microsoft does not provide a current standalone cdlmso.dll download intended to replace an Office installation.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection History
Antivirus quarantine is a possible cause, but the filename alone does not prove that a file is safe.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
cdlmso.dllor the Office installation directory. - Expand the event and inspect the original path and detection details.
Only consider restoring a quarantined file if all of the following are true:
- It was located inside the expected Office directory.
- The Office installation is legitimate.
- The file has a valid Microsoft digital signature where applicable.
- A current security scan does not identify the installation as compromised.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, a user-writable directory or an unrelated application folder, do not restore it merely because the name is familiar. Scan the computer and reinstall Office from legitimate media.
Protection History is not permanent. Microsoft states that current Windows Security history is retained for a limited period, so an older quarantine event may no longer be visible.

Fix 4: Check the Office file’s location, signature and architecture
A valid filename is not enough. If cdlmso.dll exists but the error continues:

- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Review the Details tab for the description, publisher and version.
- Confirm that the path is under the expected Office directory, not
C:WindowsSystem32,C:WindowsSysWOW64, a temporary folder or an unrelated program directory. - Compare the path with the Office program that is failing.
Office architecture must also match the installed product. A 32-bit Office installation normally uses 32-bit Office components, while a 64-bit Office installation uses 64-bit components. The bitness of Windows alone does not identify the required DLL. A 32-bit Office installation can run on 64-bit Windows.
Public metadata for cdlmso.dll is inconsistent about architecture, with both PE32 and at least one PE32+ Office 2010 listing. This is another reason not to select a replacement based only on a filename, Windows edition or third-party version table.
If the file is present but appears unsigned, corrupted or located incorrectly, repair or reinstall Office.
Fix 5: Distinguish a missing dependency from a missing DLL
If the error says “specified module could not be found” while cdlmso.dll is visibly present, the missing item may be a dependency.
Use this order:
- Run Office repair.
- Check Windows Event Viewer for an application error at the same time as the failure:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error involving the failing Office program.
- Note the application name, faulting module and error code.
- Use that information when contacting Microsoft Support or the software vendor.
- Reinstall the owning Office product if repair cannot resolve the dependency.
Do not begin by installing Visual C++, DirectX or unrelated runtime packages. There is no file-specific evidence that these are the normal remedy for cdlmso.dll.
Fix 6: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
cdlmso.dll is an Office application file, so System File Checker is not normally the tool that recreates it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself is also showing corruption, failed updates or damaged system components.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Office again.
DISM repairs the Windows component image, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command should be expected to restore an ordinary Office DLL. If the commands report that Windows files were repaired but Office still reports the error, repair Office separately.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without checking what changed can make troubleshooting harder. regsvr32 is a registration utility for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal missing-DLL repair command.

There is no verified Microsoft instruction showing that cdlmso.dll should be registered with regsvr32. Running a command such as this is therefore not a recommended fix:
regsvr32 cdlmso.dll
It may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found,” and it will not restore a deleted Office installation or its dependencies. If the file is missing, repair Office. If it exists but is corrupt, reinstall Office.

cdlmso.dll is not a driver component. Do not update display, printer or chipset drivers as a first response to this Office error.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the separate error.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which versions need attention; its driver installation requires the full version, and it should not be used as a substitute for repairing the Office installation that owns cdlmso.dll.
Windows Features, DirectX and Visual C++ repairs are likewise unrelated unless the error message identifies a separate component.
Fix 9: Use System Restore for a clearly recent change
System Restore may help when the error began immediately after an Office update, application installation or driver change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be affected.
- Start the restoration.
- Sign in and test Office afterward.
System Restore changes system settings and installed programs but does not replace personal files. It is not a substitute for reinstalling Office when the installation itself is missing or damaged.
Why downloading cdlmso.dll is risky
Random DLL download pages can provide:
- The wrong Office generation
- The wrong language or update level
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A corrupted file
- Malware or an impostor DLL
- A file that still lacks its required dependencies
Copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64 or an arbitrary application directory can create version conflicts and bypass Office servicing. It also does not repair the registry, installation source or other missing files.
Use the original licensed Office media and Microsoft’s Office repair process instead.
