msth3ge.dll may appear in messages such as “This application failed to start because msth3ge.dll was not found,” “The file msth3ge.dll is missing or corrupted,” or “A required component is missing: msth3ge.dll.” You may also see that msth3ge.dll could not be loaded or is not designed to run on Windows, depending on the application and Windows version.

The 60-second answer

Do not download msth3ge.dll and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The file is associated with Lingsoft CTAPI3 for German, a German-language component developed by Lingsoft, Inc. Microsoft records also list the filename among German Office proofing and thesaurus files. That does not prove that every copy belongs to Office, so the correct repair depends on the program displaying the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this order:

  1. Identify the application named in the error.
  2. Repair or reinstall that application.
  3. If Word or Outlook is involved, repair German proofing tools or the Office installation.
  4. Check Windows Security quarantine.
  5. Run Windows repair commands only if broader system corruption is suspected.
  6. Do not use regsvr32 unless the original software vendor specifically requires it.

What msth3ge.dll is

msth3ge.dll is a real Win32 DLL associated in public file metadata with Lingsoft CTAPI3 for German. It is used for German language-related functionality, such as proofing or thesaurus features.

Microsoft’s historical Office update records also identify msth3ge.dll alongside msth7ge.dll in German Office proofing files. This means an older Office installation can legitimately request it, but the filename alone does not identify the parent program.

It is not established as a normal Windows component, and there is no evidence that it belongs in the Windows System32 folder. It should be restored through the application or language package that originally installed it.

The file is identified as a 32-bit DLL. A 64-bit version of Windows can still use it when the requesting application is 32-bit. Windows architecture and application architecture are separate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A 32-bit application normally needs its compatible 32-bit language component.
  • A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications.
  • A random DLL with the same filename may have the wrong version, architecture, or dependencies.

Reported public records contain different historical versions and file sizes. Treat those records as identification clues, not as a complete or current download catalog.

First identify the program requesting the file

Before repairing anything, find out which application is loading msth3ge.dll.

Check the error dialog

Read the title bar and the text around the filename. Look for references to:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Microsoft Office
  • A German spelling, grammar, or thesaurus feature
  • A legacy language or translation program
  • An older business application
  • A launcher or another named executable

If the dialog names an executable, write it down. The executable is more useful than the DLL filename because it tells you which installation should be repaired.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check when the error appears

The timing often identifies the cause:

  • When Word or Outlook starts: suspect Office proofing files or a damaged Office installation.
  • When German proofreading is used: suspect the German language component.
  • After changing Office languages: suspect an incomplete language installation.
  • After antivirus detection: check quarantine before reinstalling.
  • After cleanup software or an uninstall: the parent application may be incomplete.
  • When an old specialist program starts: repair or reinstall that program.
  • After a Windows update with other errors: check system integrity, but do not assume Windows owns this DLL.

Locate any remaining copy

If the program still launches far enough to expose its installation path, check that folder first. You can also search from File Explorer:

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. In the search box, type msth3ge.dll.
  4. Wait for the search to finish.
  5. Right-click any result and select Open file location.
  6. Record the complete path.

A copy inside an Office proofing directory or the original application’s directory is more plausible than a copy in a temporary folder, a user profile, or an unfamiliar startup location. Do not replace the file merely because its name matches.

To inspect basic information:

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open Details.
  4. Check the product name, publisher information, and file description.
  5. Open Digital Signatures, if that tab is present.
  6. On the General tab, note whether Windows reports that the file came from another computer and offers an Unblock option.

An unexpected path, missing signature, or unfamiliar publisher deserves investigation rather than automatic restoration.

Fix 1: Repair Microsoft 365 or Office language tools

Use this fix when Word, Outlook, or another Office application reports the error, especially when German spelling, grammar, or thesaurus functions are involved.

If German is not listed:

  1. Select Add a Language.
  2. Choose German.
  3. Select the appropriate language variant if prompted.
  4. Confirm that proofing tools are included.
  5. Complete the installation.
  6. Restart Office and test German proofreading or thesaurus features.

Microsoft’s Office language settings explain the language and proofing controls.

Install the matching Language Accessory Pack

If the proofing status remains unavailable, install the German Language Accessory Pack from Microsoft.

  1. Check whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit:
  2. Open Word.
  3. Select File > Account.
  4. Select About Word.
  5. Read the architecture shown in the information window.
  6. Close Office.
  7. Open Microsoft’s Language Accessory Pack for Microsoft 365 page.
  8. Select German.
  9. Download the package matching the installed Office architecture.
  10. Run the installer.
  11. Restart Windows if requested.
  12. Return to File > Options > Language and confirm that German says Proofing installed.

Do not install a 64-bit language package into a 32-bit Office installation or the reverse. Windows may be 64-bit while Office remains 32-bit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair Office through Windows

If the language pack is present but the error continues, repair Office.

For a traditional Office installation:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365.
  5. Select Change.
  6. Choose Repair, Quick Repair, or Online Repair, depending on what is offered.
  7. Start with the less disruptive repair option.
  8. If that does not restore the component, run Online Repair.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Test the Office application again.

For an installation managed through Windows Settings:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Installed apps.
  3. Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
  4. Select the three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Restart Office and test again.

Microsoft’s repair instructions for apps and programs cover the available repair choices.

If repair removes or changes language settings, return to the Office language page and reinstall German proofing tools afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the legacy application

Use this fix when the error belongs to an older language, translation, publishing, or business application rather than Office.

First check whether the application has its own repair option:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the application that displays the error.
  5. Select Change, Repair, or Modify.
  6. Keep German language or proofing features selected.
  7. Complete the repair.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Launch the original application.

If no repair option exists, reinstall the program from its original publisher, trusted installation media, or an organizational software repository. Use the same edition and architecture as the existing application where possible.

Before uninstalling, save the application’s documents, templates, dictionaries, license information, and settings. If the program is obsolete and no installer remains, restoring the application from a known-good backup may be safer than trying to obtain an isolated DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reinstall is the definitive repair when the parent program’s own copy of msth3ge.dll was removed or damaged. Do not substitute a file from another application, even if the filename is identical.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may quarantine a DLL after a detection or after the file changes unexpectedly.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Look for an event involving msth3ge.dll or the parent application.
  7. Expand the event and record the original file path and detection name.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • The path belongs to the known application.
  • The application was installed from a trusted source.
  • The publisher and signature are consistent.
  • You are confident the detection is a false positive.
  • The original application still needs that component.

Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can cause Defender to detect it again. Use Microsoft’s Protection History guidance before taking action.

If the file was located in a temporary folder, an unfamiliar startup directory, or a user-profile location, do not restore it solely because the filename is legitimate. Scan the computer and repair the parent program from its official installer instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components when other system errors exist

msth3ge.dll is not established as a standard Windows system file, so DISM and SFC are unlikely to restore it directly. Use them when the DLL error appears with broader symptoms, such as damaged Windows features, repeated application crashes, update failures, or other missing system files.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish.
  3. Keep the window open even if progress pauses for a while.

Run System File Checker

After DISM completes, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the original application.

Possible results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files appear intact.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: repeat the repair process only if Microsoft’s guidance indicates it, then repair the parent application directly.

Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.

Running these commands repeatedly will not install a missing Office or Lingsoft component.

If manually comparing Windows components, repairing system files, and repeating DISM/SFC is taking time without showing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application that owns msth3ge.dll remains the definitive fix.

Fix 5: Check drivers only when the parent application points to one

A missing language DLL is not normally repaired through Device Manager. However, if the error began with a hardware utility, scanner application, printer package, or other vendor program, update or reinstall that vendor package rather than the DLL itself.

To check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories related to the affected hardware.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. Read the message under Device status.
  8. Use Update driver only when a driver update is actually indicated.
  9. Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package for reinstallations.
  10. Restart Windows and test the application.

Do not expect Device Manager to supply a German proofing DLL. If many devices have outdated drivers and manually checking each manufacturer package is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; driver installation through the full version is optional. For this file, repairing the named application remains the correct fix.

Fix 6: Check Windows Features only for a related application feature

Windows Features does not normally contain msth3ge.dll, but a legacy program may depend on an optional Windows feature or runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Review enabled features relevant to the affected application.
  5. Do not enable random features to replace the DLL.
  6. If the software documentation specifically requires a feature, enable it.
  7. Select OK.
  8. Restart Windows if prompted.
  9. Repair or relaunch the original program.

If enabling a feature does not change the error, undo the experiment if appropriate and return to repairing the parent application.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

regsvr32 registers self-registering COM or ActiveX components. A language or proofing runtime DLL normally does not need manual registration.

Running a command such as this is therefore not a general repair:

regsvr32 msth3ge.dll

It may produce an entry-point or registration error, or it may appear to succeed without fixing the application. It also does not correct a missing dependency, wrong architecture, damaged Office installation, or quarantined file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use regsvr32 only if the original software vendor’s documentation specifically identifies this DLL as a self-registering component and supplies the correct command.

Why downloading the DLL is unsafe

Random DLL download sites can provide:

  • The wrong architecture
  • A mismatched historical version
  • A modified or malicious file
  • A file with missing dependencies
  • A DLL that does not belong to your application
  • A file that causes a later entry-point or compatibility error

Copying it into both System32 and SysWOW64 is especially unsafe. Those directories serve different purposes, and manually placing a third-party DLL there can create conflicts for unrelated programs.

There is no verified universal replacement DLL for this error. Use the official Office language package, the original application’s installer, Windows Security quarantine information, or a known-good organizational backup.

If the error still appears

After repairing the application, record:

  1. The exact application and executable named in the dialog.
  2. Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  3. The full path of any remaining msth3ge.dll.
  4. The file’s publisher and digital signature.
  5. Whether Windows Security quarantined it.
  6. Whether the error occurs only with German proofing.
  7. Whether another DLL is named in Event Viewer.
  8. Whether the application launches after German language tools are removed or disabled.

To inspect application crashes:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Find an error at the time of the crash.
  6. Read the Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
  7. Use those names to identify the component that needs repair.

If the error began after a major system change and a restore point exists, review Microsoft’s recovery options. System Restore may help recover a damaged application installation, but it should not be treated as a source for an isolated DLL.

FAQ

Is msth3ge.dll part of Windows?

There is no evidence that it is a normal Windows System32 component. It is associated with Lingsoft CTAPI3 for German and also appears in historical Microsoft Office German proofing records.

Is msth3ge.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?

Public metadata identifies it as a 32-bit DLL. That is compatible with 64-bit Windows when the requesting application is 32-bit.

Does every copy come from Microsoft Office?

No. Microsoft records show that the filename appeared in Office proofing files, but public metadata also associates it with Lingsoft CTAPI3 for German. Identify the parent application before repairing or replacing anything.

Can I copy the file into System32?

No. Restore it through the application or Office language component that owns it. Manual copying can create version, architecture, and security problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

Usually not. A language or proofing DLL normally is not a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.

What if only German thesaurus or spelling tools fail?

Repair the German proofing installation first. Reinstalling Windows is disproportionate for a language-feature problem.

What if the original application is no longer supported?

Remove the unused language feature if possible, restore the program from a known-good backup or restore point, or contact the original vendor. There is no verified universal replacement for msth3ge.dll.

How do I know the repair worked?

The original application should launch without the missing-file dialog, and the affected German proofing or thesaurus feature should operate normally. If the dialog names a different missing DLL afterward, repair that dependency through the same parent application rather than downloading files individually.
