This application failed to start because cdrdrv.dll was not found.
These messages usually mean that an old CD-recording application called CD Wizard cannot find one of its own files. cdrdrv.dll is associated with CD-Recorder Drivers from VoB Computersysteme GmbH, not with Windows itself.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the safest path:
- CD Wizard is still installed: run its original installer and choose Repair, if available.
- The problem began after antivirus detection: check Windows Security protection history before restoring anything.
- The error appears after uninstalling old software or at every startup: remove CD Wizard and its remaining startup entry.
- You still have the original CD or a verified installer: uninstall and reinstall the complete application.
- The program installs but will not run: check compatibility rather than copying the DLL into a Windows folder.
- The problem concerns a physical CD/DVD drive: troubleshoot the drive and its current driver separately.
- You do not use CD Wizard anymore: uninstall it instead of trying to preserve an obsolete component.
- The error names several Windows files as well: use DISM and System File Checker as secondary Windows-repair steps.
Do not download cdrdrv.dll from a random DLL website. A replacement may contain malware, belong to the wrong CD Wizard release, have the wrong architecture, or fail because the rest of the application is missing.
What cdrdrv.dll is
cdrdrv.dll is a 32-bit Win32 DLL identified with the historical CD Wizard CD-recording program from VoB Computersysteme GmbH. Its description is “CD-Recorder Drivers.”

Despite that description, it is not evidence of a current Windows driver component. There is no evidence that Windows 10 or Windows 11 normally installs this file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The normal location would have been the CD Wizard installation directory. The exact historical folder is not verified, so do not assume that a copy in a Windows system directory is correct.
The filename alone cannot prove which executable is requesting it. CD Wizard is the likely source, but an old shortcut, startup item, backup, or another legacy program may be triggering the message.
Fix 1: Repair CD Wizard from its original installer
This is the most direct repair because the installer can restore the DLL together with the other files and settings CD Wizard needs.

- Before running it, scan the installer with Windows Security.
- Open the installer.
- If it offers Repair, select it.
- Complete the repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Start CD Wizard from its normal shortcut.
If the program opens without the missing-file message, the repair worked.
If there is no Repair option:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for CD Wizard, CD-Wizard, or software published by VoB.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the verified installer again.
- Test the application before restoring old shortcuts or saved configuration files.
On Windows 10, the equivalent path is Settings → Apps → Apps & features.
Do not replace only cdrdrv.dll if you can reinstall the complete application. The installer may also provide configuration files, supporting libraries, optical-drive components, and the correct application version.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Antivirus software may remove an old DLL because legacy software can have unusual behavior or an installer that no longer meets current security expectations.

To inspect Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for CD Wizard,
cdrdrv.dll, or the folder where CD Wizard was installed. - Open an entry to view its name, location, and action.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only when all of these are true:
- You recognize the installer and its source.
- The file was installed as part of the legitimate CD Wizard package.
- The file is in the expected application directory.
- A current security scan does not identify the installer or program as unsafe.
If the installer is old or its source is uncertain, leave the file quarantined. Obtain a clean, verified installer instead and scan it before use.
After restoring a known-safe file, restart the application. If Windows Security immediately quarantines it again, stop trying to bypass the detection. Remove the old software or run it only in an appropriately isolated legacy environment.
Fix 3: Remove a stale startup reference
The error may appear even when CD Wizard itself has already been removed. In that situation, Windows may still be launching a shortcut, helper, scheduled task, or startup entry that points to the deleted program.
First check installed applications:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for CD Wizard or VoB software.
- Uninstall any matching program you no longer need.
Then check startup applications:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for CD Wizard, VoB, CD-recording software, or an entry whose location points to the old installation folder.
- If you can identify the entry confidently, select it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Also inspect scheduled tasks:
- Open Start.
- Type Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose name or action clearly refers to CD Wizard or VoB.
- Disable or delete only an entry you have positively identified as belonging to the removed program.
Do not delete registry entries merely because they contain cdrdrv.dll. If the executable, publisher, and installation path are unclear, leave the entry alone and investigate before changing it.
Fix 4: Reinstall in compatibility mode
CD Wizard is legacy CD-recording software. Modern Windows may allow the application to install while still being unable to support its old optical-drive interface or low-level components.
Try compatibility settings only after obtaining the complete installer:
- Locate the CD Wizard installer.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version that matches the software documentation, if available.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the installer requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer.
You can apply similar settings to the installed CD Wizard executable.

Compatibility mode does not recreate obsolete drivers or guarantee that CD recording will work. If the application still reports cdrdrv.dll errors, produces a “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” message, or cannot detect the recorder, the program may no longer be suitable for the computer.
Fix 5: Check the physical CD/DVD drive separately
A missing cdrdrv.dll message and a missing physical optical drive are different problems.
If File Explorer, Device Manager, or CD Wizard cannot detect the actual drive:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Right-click the optical drive.
- Select Properties and read the device status.
- If the device is disabled, select Enable device.
- If a warning icon is present, select Update driver.
- If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open Properties → Driver and select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows and test the drive again.
If the drive disappeared after installing or removing old CD/DVD-burning software, uninstall the legacy burning application first. Microsoft also documents separate troubleshooting for CD/DVD drives that are not recognized after Windows changes or burning-software changes.
Updating a physical drive driver will not normally recreate cdrdrv.dll. The DLL belongs to the old application, while Device Manager manages the hardware and its Windows driver.
When identifying the correct hardware driver manually, hunting through several manufacturer pages and deciding which package is stale can be time-consuming. Do not use Windows Features for this DLL
Turning on Windows Features is not a normal fix for cdrdrv.dll.
You can open Control Panel → Programs → Turn Windows features on or off to manage built-in components, but CD Wizard is not a Windows feature. Enabling .NET Framework, legacy components, or other optional features will not reliably restore this third-party DLL.

Fix 6: Run DISM and System File Checker only for wider Windows corruption
Because cdrdrv.dll is not identified as a Windows component, DISM and SFC are not the primary repair. They can help if Windows itself has damaged protected files and you are seeing multiple unrelated errors.

Save your work, then:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Success means the commands report that component repair or system-file verification completed. This does not normally recreate a missing CD Wizard file, so return to the original installer if cdrdrv.dll is still missing.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing which Windows component changed can waste time when the real problem is an old application installation. Do not copy a downloaded DLL into:
C:WindowsSystem32
Do not copy it into:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not interchangeable repair locations. A 32-bit application normally loads its matching private dependency from its application directory. Placing an old file in a system directory can create version conflicts, architecture mismatches, and a wider security problem.

The reported 32-bit identity also does not mean that a 64-bit Windows installation should receive the file in SysWOW64. The correct repair is to restore the complete application package through its installer.
Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
There is no reliable evidence that cdrdrv.dll is a self-registering COM component. Therefore, do not run:
regsvr32 cdrdrv.dll
A registration error does not prove that the file is missing or damaged. It may simply mean that the DLL was never designed to be registered.
Do not install Visual C++ packages as the first fix
cdrdrv.dll is associated with CD Wizard, not identified as a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file. Installing multiple Visual C++ Redistributable packages is not the primary solution unless the error separately names a Microsoft runtime DLL.
If CD Wizard’s installer reports a missing runtime, use the runtime package specified by that installer or application documentation. Otherwise, repair the CD Wizard installation itself.

How to identify the program requesting the file
If you are unsure what triggers the error:
- Note whether it appears during startup, when opening a shortcut, or when launching a particular program.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- Check the Target field.
- Inspect the target folder in File Explorer.
- Look for CD Wizard, VoB, or an old CD-recording program.
- Open Task Manager → Startup apps and check entries that launch at sign-in.
- Record the full error text and any path shown in the dialog.
If a game or modern application reports this filename, do not assume the game uses CD Wizard. Verify the executable’s installation folder and installed components first.
When to stop repairing CD Wizard
Uninstall the application rather than continuing to restore the DLL when:
- You no longer use CD Wizard.
- There is no trustworthy installer or original disc.
- Windows Security repeatedly detects the old package.
- The application cannot detect the optical drive after reinstalling.
- Compatibility mode does not resolve the loader error.
- The error returns after each restart.
- The software depends on obsolete low-level recording components.
If you still need to run the program, use a supported replacement or an appropriately isolated legacy computer. Do not weaken Windows security or place unverified files in system directories just to preserve an obsolete installation.
Prevention
- Keep the original installer and license records with the application documentation.
- Back up the complete installer, not only individual DLL files.
- Scan archived installers before running them.
- Remove obsolete startup entries when uninstalling legacy software.
- Do not use random DLL download sites as a software-repair method.
- Keep physical CD/DVD-drive problems separate from application DLL problems.
- Record the program name and installation path whenever an error appears.
- Prefer supported recording software on current Windows versions.

Treat that as a separate hardware or Windows-driver problem. Use Device Manager and Microsoft’s CD/DVD-drive troubleshooting steps rather than copying cdrdrv.dll into a system folder.
