If Windows says, “The program can’t start because mptax.dll is missing from your computer,” the Microsoft Money installation is usually damaged or incomplete. The mptax.dll file belongs to Microsoft Money, not to Windows itself, so the safest repair is to restore the matching Money installation rather than download a replacement DLL.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list to jump to the situation that matches your error:

  • Microsoft Money stopped launching after antivirus activity: Check Windows Security Protection History first.
  • The problem appeared after a failed install, update, disk error, or manual cleanup: Repair or reinstall the same Microsoft Money edition.
  • You have a verified Money installer or backup: Restore the file only to the original Money program folder.
  • Money launches but one feature fails: Repair the complete installation instead of replacing only mptax.dll.
  • Several Windows programs also report missing or corrupted files: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
  • The error began immediately after a Windows or software change: Install pending updates, then consider System Restore.
  • You are considering System32, SysWOW64, regsvr32, DirectX, or Visual C++ repairs: Those are normally unrelated to this file.

What is mptax.dll

mptax.dll is a real Microsoft Money component with the internal description “tax area.” It is associated with Microsoft Corporation and is identified as a 32-bit Microsoft Money file. Public metadata commonly lists version 17.0.0.3817 and a size of approximately 0.42 MB, but those details should not be used as the only method of authentication.

Microsoft Money products that may use this file include:

The file is not a Windows system component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, driver, or general-purpose Windows DLL. A 32-bit Money program normally loads its DLLs from the Money installation directory, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.

Do not place mptax.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are not substitutes for the application directory.

Common mptax.dll error messages

Windows may display one of these standard loader messages:

  • “The program can’t start because mptax.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
  • “mptax.dll was not found.”
  • “Cannot find mptax.dll.”
  • “mptax.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “Could not load mptax.dll.”

The wording can vary by Windows version and by the way Money was started. These messages mean that Windows could not load the library that the Money executable requested. They do not prove that the DLL itself is the only damaged file.

Fix 1: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine

Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate application file after an update, scan, or change in detection rules. Check quarantine before reinstalling Money.

  1. Press Windows and type Windows Security.
  2. Open Windows Security.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Under Current threats, select Protection history.
  5. Review recent actions involving mptax.dll, Microsoft Money, or a Money executable.
  6. Open a relevant entry to inspect its details.

Restore the file only when all of the following are true:

  • The file came from your own intact Microsoft Money installation, original media, or a verified installer.
  • The Money edition matches the edition you normally use.
  • A current security scan does not identify a genuine threat.
  • You have backed up your Money data files.

If Windows Security offers Restore, use it only after checking the file’s origin. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect the file again after restoration. If it is quarantined repeatedly, do not keep overriding protection. Repair or reinstall Money from a trusted source instead.

After restoring a verified file, restart Windows and try Microsoft Money. If the same message returns, continue with the installation repair.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall Microsoft Money

This is the most likely permanent solution because the missing library is application content. Repairing the product restores its companion files and installation configuration instead of treating one DLL as an isolated download.

Back up your Money data first

Before changing the installation:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Search for Money data files, including files with the .mny extension.
  3. Copy the relevant files to a separate folder, external drive, or other trusted backup location.
  4. If Money stores related files beside the main data file, copy those as well.
  5. Do not overwrite the backup during troubleshooting.

Reinstalling Money should target program files, but it should not be treated as a substitute for backing up financial data.

Try the built-in repair option

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find Microsoft Money or the matching Money Plus product.
  5. Right-click it and select Repair, Change, or a similarly named option.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Open Microsoft Money and load a copy of your backed-up data.

If Money starts without the missing-file message, the repair restored the required installation files. Test normal functions before applying optional patches or modifications.

Microsoft documents these repair and uninstall paths in its guide to uninstalling or removing apps and programs.

Reinstall the exact Money edition

If Repair is unavailable or fails:

  1. Return to Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
  2. Select the matching Microsoft Money installation.
  3. Choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows when prompted.
  5. Run the original installer for the same edition and region.
  6. Complete the installation.
  7. Restart Windows again.
  8. Launch Money before restoring optional updates or modifications.
  9. Open a copy of your backed-up .mny data.

Do not mix files from a retail Money release, a regional release, Money Plus, and Money Plus Sunset. Similar product names do not guarantee matching program files.

Microsoft Money is discontinued, and Microsoft no longer provides an active official download channel for the original program. Microsoft’s current guidance confirms that availability is limited, while older Microsoft discussions describe the historical Money Plus download. An archived installer is not automatically an official current Microsoft download, so verify its provenance, expected filename, hash where available, and malware status before using it.

If an old installer refuses to run on Windows 10 or Windows 11, compatibility mode may help some editions, but it is not guaranteed:

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
  1. Right-click the installer.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose an older Windows version.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Run the installer as administrator.

If setup still fails, do not fill the missing-file gap with a random DLL. The issue may be broader compatibility or an unavailable installation source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Restore mptax.dll from your own verified backup

Manual copying is appropriate only when you have a known-good copy from your own Money installation media or backup.

  1. Locate the verified copy of mptax.dll.
  2. Right-click it and select Properties.
  3. Review its origin and security information where available.
  4. Scan the file with Microsoft Defender.
  5. Identify the original Microsoft Money program directory.
  6. Copy the file into that directory, not into a Windows system folder.
  7. Restart Microsoft Money.

If you are unsure where Money is installed, right-click its Start menu shortcut, select More → Open file location, then right-click the shortcut and choose Properties. The Start in or Target information can help identify the application directory.

Do not copy the file from another application, another computer with a different Money edition, or a random download. A DLL can appear to have the right name while having the wrong build, language resources, dependencies, or malicious modifications.

If Money still fails after restoring the file, the installation is probably missing additional components. Use Repair or reinstall the complete product.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They are unlikely to recreate a Microsoft Money DLL, but they are useful when mptax.dll errors appear alongside wider Windows corruption, failed updates, or other damaged system files.

  1. Press Windows.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test Microsoft Money.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The commands and their interpretation are documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.

A successful Windows repair does not necessarily mean mptax.dll will reappear. If the error remains, repair or reinstall Microsoft Money.

If you repeatedly run SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows reported issues in one place; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling Microsoft Money remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.

Fix 5: Install Windows updates and investigate storage errors

A failed update or damaged filesystem can remove or corrupt application files. First install pending Windows updates:

  1. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Check for updates again until Windows reports that the system is current.
  7. Test Money.

If other files are disappearing or several applications report corruption, check the drive. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

chkdsk /f C:

Windows may ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y, press Enter, and restart. Save work first because the check can take time.

Microsoft’s update troubleshooting material includes disk-checking context and the chkdsk /f C: command. Do not interrupt a disk check while it is operating.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore is appropriate when Money worked normally and the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, or other system change.

  1. Press Windows.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  6. Select Next, review the affected programs, and select Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.
  8. Test Microsoft Money.

System Restore does not replace a Money installation and does not restore personal data files. If the problem is simply a missing application component, Money Repair or reinstall remains the more direct solution. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.

Why regsvr32 usually does not fix mptax.dll

Do not routinely run:

regsvr32 mptax.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose self-registration functions, commonly certain COM or ActiveX components. mptax.dll is a Microsoft Money program library, not known to be a self-registering COM server.

Running the command may produce an error such as a missing entry point or registration failure. It does not restore missing companion files, Money configuration, language resources, or the correct edition. Microsoft explains the purpose and limitations of regsvr32 in its official troubleshooting documentation.

Why drivers, DirectX, and Visual C++ are not the first fix

mptax.dll is part of Microsoft Money, so updating a graphics driver, reinstalling DirectX, or installing a Visual C++ redistributable is not supported as the primary repair. Those components may matter to other programs, but they do not normally restore a missing Money library.

Device Manager is relevant only if the error appeared with broader hardware instability:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories with warning icons.
  4. Right-click a relevant device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not uninstall working devices merely because mptax.dll is missing.

If you have several unrelated driver warnings and want to avoid hunting through hardware vendors and version numbers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues; installation of drivers through the full version is optional, and it will not replace the need to repair Microsoft Money.

Avoid random DLL download sites

Downloading mptax.dll from an unfamiliar DLL site is risky because:

  • The file may contain malware.
  • The version may not match your Money edition.
  • The architecture or language may be wrong.
  • Companion files may also be missing.
  • The file may be modified or incorrectly named.
  • Copying it into a system folder can create a new application or security problem.
  • It does not repair a damaged installer, registry configuration, or corrupted storage.

The safe sources are your original Microsoft Money media, a verified backup, or a carefully checked archive of the matching edition. Microsoft no longer actively hosts a current Money installer, so treat archived copies as untrusted until their provenance and contents have been checked.

FAQ

Is mptax.dll a genuine Microsoft file?

Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Money and Microsoft Corporation. That does not mean every file carrying the same name is safe. Verify its source before restoring it.

Is mptax.dll part of Windows?

No. It belongs to Microsoft Money and should normally remain in the Money program directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is mptax.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?

The known build is 32-bit. There is no reliable evidence of a separate 64-bit build. Do not interpret that as an instruction to copy it into SysWOW64; a 32-bit application normally uses its own installation folder.

Should I copy it into System32?

No. System32 is not a general DLL repair folder. Copy the file only into the original Microsoft Money directory, and only when the copy comes from verified installation media or backup.

Will regsvr32 fix the error?

Usually not. This file is a program library, not known to be a self-registering COM component. Repair or reinstall Microsoft Money instead.

Will SFC or DISM restore mptax.dll?

Usually not. They repair Windows components and can help when Windows itself is corrupted, but they are not a guaranteed source for Microsoft Money files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Money still fails after reinstalling?

Confirm that you installed the same edition and region, check Defender Protection History again, scan the installation, and investigate disk or filesystem errors. Preserve your .mny backup while testing.

Can I use Microsoft Money on Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Compatibility varies by Money edition and system. Money is discontinued and unsupported, so an older installer may require compatibility settings and may still fail. Do not assume that a missing DLL download will solve an underlying compatibility problem.
