Start with this diagnostic checklist
cdrsapu.dll is SaPu’s CD-ROM Plugin, and cdrsapu.dll errors usually come from an older PlayStation emulator rather than from Windows itself. Before changing Windows components, establish:
- Which program displays the message: ePSXe, PCSX, another PSEmu-compatible emulator, or an unknown startup process.
- When it appears: while launching the emulator, selecting a CD-ROM plugin, starting Windows, or opening a game.
- What changed: an emulator folder was deleted, antivirus quarantined a file, an archive was extracted incompletely, cleanup software ran, or the emulator version changed.
- Which architecture is involved: the official Windows ePSXe executable is a Win32 program, so it needs a compatible 32-bit plugin.
Do not begin by copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. SaPu’s file is an application plugin. It normally belongs in the emulator’s own plugins directory.

What cdrsapu.dll is
cdrsapu.dll is the Windows DLL for SaPu’s CD-ROM Plugin, a CD-ROM component designed for the PSEmu Pro-style plugin system used by ePSXe and other compatible PlayStation emulators.
The filename may appear as either cdrSaPu.dll or cdrsapu.dll. Windows treats capitalization as insignificant, but preserve the filename supplied by the original package.

Historical emulator plugin packages identify releases such as 1.0 and 1.3. Those package labels should not be confused with internal Windows file metadata, which can use a different version value. There is no reliable reason to treat this DLL as a Microsoft runtime, a Windows component, a graphics driver, DirectX file, .NET file, or Visual C++ Redistributable.
The normal path looks like this:
<ePSXe folder>pluginscdrSaPu.dll
The exact folder may differ if you use PCSX or another emulator, but the principle is the same: keep the plugin beside the application that loads it.
Fix 1: Restore the plugin to the emulator’s plugins folder
This is the fastest and most likely fix when the message says the file is missing or was not found.

Exit ePSXe or the affected emulator. If it remains in memory:
- Press

- Look for the emulator process.
- Select it and choose End task.
Do not replace a DLL while the emulator is still running.
2. Find the emulator folder
Right-click the shortcut you normally use and select Open file location. If Windows opens a shortcut folder, right-click the shortcut again, choose Properties, and inspect the Target field.
Look for a folder containing the emulator executable and a folder named:
plugins
For ePSXe, the folder commonly resembles:
C:GamesePSXeplugins
The location can be anywhere, including Documents, a portable applications folder, or another drive.
3. Obtain a complete, trusted package
Use the original emulator distribution or a known-good emulator/plugin archive from a trustworthy source. Prefer a complete package over a loose DLL copied from a generic DLL download page.
A loose download is risky because:
- It may contain malware.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may be damaged or renamed.
- It may not match the emulator’s plugin interface.
- It does not repair a broken emulator configuration or missing dependency.
There is no need to find a current Microsoft download for this file. Microsoft did not publish cdrsapu.dll, and no maintained official SaPu support page should be assumed to exist. If you still have the original emulator archive, use that first.
4. Extract the package correctly
Right-click the archive and choose Extract All. Do not run the DLL from inside a ZIP file.

After extraction, locate the file named cdrSaPu.dll or cdrsapu.dll. Copy it into the emulator’s plugins directory:
<emulator folder>plugins
Do not put it in either of these locations:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
If Windows asks for administrator approval while copying into the emulator folder, confirm only if you recognize the folder and package.
5. Select the plugin in ePSXe
Open ePSXe and select:
- Config
- Cdrom
- The SaPu CD-ROM plugin
- OK
Close and reopen ePSXe, then test the operation that originally produced the error.
How to tell whether this worked
The fix worked if:
- ePSXe opens without the missing-DLL message.
- SaPu’s plugin appears in the CD-ROM plugin list.
- The emulator can access the selected CD-ROM source.
- The error does not return after restarting Windows.
If the plugin is present but does not appear in the list, the emulator may be looking at a different installation folder. Use the shortcut’s Target location again and check that you copied the file into that installation’s plugins folder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 2: Use ePSXe’s built-in CD-ROM plugin
SaPu’s external plugin is often optional. ePSXe includes internal CD-ROM plugins, so you may be able to remove the dependency entirely.
- Open ePSXe.
- Select Config.
- Choose Cdrom.
- Select an internal ePSXe CD-ROM option instead of SaPu’s external plugin.
- Select OK.
- Restart ePSXe.
- Test an ISO or another known-good game image.
If ePSXe works with its internal plugin, cdrsapu.dll is not required for your current setup. You can leave the external file unused or remove the stale plugin selection from the configuration.
This is especially useful when the error began after changing emulator versions. A newer or freshly extracted ePSXe folder may use its internal plugin while an old configuration still points to SaPu’s missing DLL.
If games run from an ISO but fail only when you select a physical or virtual CD drive, the missing-DLL problem may already be resolved. The remaining issue is then CD-ROM configuration or hardware access, not Windows loading cdrsapu.dll.

Fix 3: Rebuild the emulator folder instead of replacing one DLL
If the plugin folder contains several missing files, or the emulator fails with multiple load errors, rebuild the application folder.
- Back up memory cards, save files, BIOS files, and game configuration files.
- Close the emulator.
- Rename the old emulator folder, for example:
ePSXe-old
- Extract a complete, trusted emulator package into a new folder.
- Copy back only your personal saves and configuration data.
- Start the new executable.
- Select the internal CD-ROM plugin first.
- Add SaPu’s plugin only if you specifically need it.
This separates a damaged installation from a damaged save or configuration file. It also avoids carrying forward an old path that points to a deleted DLL.
The definitive repair for a file that ships with a third-party emulator is reinstalling or rebuilding that emulator from a complete package. Windows repair utilities cannot recreate an application-specific plugin reliably.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may have removed or quarantined the DLL. This can happen after the file was extracted, during a scan, or after a security definition update.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand any entry referring to the emulator folder or
cdrsapu.dll. - Review the detected file path and action.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- You recognize the emulator installation.
- The package came from a trusted source.
- The file was not a loose download from an unknown DLL site.
- A fresh security scan does not identify the complete package as malicious.
If the package’s provenance is uncertain, do not restore the file. Delete the questionable copy and reinstall the emulator from a clean, trusted package instead.
After restoring a known-good file, start the emulator and verify that the plugin loads. If Windows Security immediately quarantines it again, stop using that copy and investigate the full archive rather than repeatedly overriding protection.
Fix 5: Distinguish a missing plugin from a missing dependency
The message may name cdrsapu.dll even when the real problem is a dependency required by that plugin.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Compare the wording carefully:
- “cdrsapu.dll was not found” usually means the plugin itself is absent or the emulator is looking in the wrong folder.
- “Failed to load cdrsapu.dll” can indicate an incompatible plugin, corruption, or a missing dependency.
- “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency rather than the named DLL.
- “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” commonly indicates corruption or architecture incompatibility.
If the message names another DLL, troubleshoot that DLL specifically. Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables merely because a generic DLL article recommends them. The current Microsoft packages are named VC_redist.x86.exe and VC_redist.x64.exe, and neither one replaces cdrsapu.dll.
You may install a Microsoft runtime when the error explicitly identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime or when the emulator’s documentation requires one. Otherwise, re-extract the complete emulator/plugin package first.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. The official Windows ePSXe executable is Win32, so a compatible SaPu plugin is normally expected to be 32-bit as well.
Do not try to solve an architecture mismatch by copying the same DLL into both system folders.
To check the emulator process:
- Start the emulator.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details in Task Manager.
- Right-click the column headings.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
You can also inspect the emulator package documentation or executable properties. If the package is an older Win32 application, use the matching plugin supplied with that package.
If a fresh, compatible package still produces a “not designed to run” error:

- Delete the extracted plugin copy.
- Extract it again from the original archive.
- Confirm the archive completed without an error.
- Confirm you did not copy a file from a different emulator build.
- Test ePSXe’s internal CD-ROM plugin.
Do not attempt to make an x64 DLL work in a 32-bit emulator by changing its filename or moving it to SysWOW64.
Fix 7: Do not register this plugin with regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. PSEmu plugins are loaded through the emulator’s plugin interface instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This command is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 cdrsapu.dll
If it reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that does not prove the plugin is broken. It means the DLL is not a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.
Use the emulator’s Config > Cdrom menu and its plugins directory instead.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is failing
System File Checker and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore third-party emulator plugins.
Run them when you also have unrelated Windows symptoms, such as damaged system utilities, failed Windows features, or repeated component errors.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall or restore the emulator plugin separately.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that component repair completed, but that does not guarantee cdrsapu.dll has been restored. You still need to place the plugin in the emulator’s plugins folder.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows components is taking longer than rebuilding the old emulator folder, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for related system problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling the emulator remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Do not use Windows Features to enable DirectPlay, .NET, or another optional component solely because cdrsapu.dll is missing. Enable a Windows feature only when the emulator or a separate error explicitly requires it.
Fix 9: Check drivers only for a separate device problem
A graphics, sound, chipset, or CD-ROM driver does not normally restore SaPu’s plugin. Device Manager is relevant only if Windows also reports a hardware problem.
To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, Display adapters, or the category named by the separate error.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Device status message and error code.
- Use Update driver only when a real device issue is present.
Do not uninstall a working driver to fix a missing emulator DLL. If a separate driver problem requires checking many vendor packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation requires the full version. A driver reinstall will not replace cdrsapu.dll, so repair the emulator separately.
Fix 10: Remove an orphaned startup entry
If the error appears when you sign in, but ePSXe or the emulator has already been removed, Windows may still be launching an old shortcut or frontend configuration.
Check these locations:
Startup folder
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter:
shell:startup
- Press Enter.
- Remove only the shortcut that clearly points to the deleted emulator.
Then check the all-users startup folder:
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter:
shell:common startup
- Press Enter.
- Remove the obsolete emulator shortcut if present.
Task Manager startup entries
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Disable an entry that clearly belongs to the removed emulator or frontend.
- Restart Windows.
Scheduled Tasks
- Open Start.
- Search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Inspect tasks whose actions point to the old emulator folder.
- Disable or delete only a task you can identify confidently.
If a third-party frontend still launches the emulator, remove the old emulator path from that frontend’s configuration. Do not copy cdrsapu.dll into a system directory simply to hide a stale startup reference.
Best Value
- Wired Controller, USB cable: 1.8M.
- Compatible with Switch (version 3.0.0 or above), Windows, Raspberry Pi devices.
- Rumble vibration.
- Support turbo function.
Fix 11: Use System Restore only as a last resort
System Restore may help if the DLL disappeared immediately after a known system change and you cannot recover the original emulator package.
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Choose Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Continue only if you understand what will be reverted.
System Restore is not a substitute for a clean emulator installation and may not restore personal files or application archives. Back up important saves before proceeding.
What not to do
Avoid these common but unsafe responses:
- Copying
cdrsapu.dllintoSystem32. - Copying it into
SysWOW64. - Downloading a random loose DLL.
- Running
regsvr32repeatedly. - Removing installed Visual C++ versions.
- Reinstalling DirectX or .NET without an error that requires them.
- Running SFC and DISM as a substitute for reinstalling the emulator.
- Reinstalling graphics or CD-ROM drivers for a plugin-path problem.
- Restoring a quarantined file whose source is unknown.
Application-local DLLs should remain with the application that loads them. This also makes the installation easier to back up, move, audit, and remove.
FAQ
Is cdrsapu.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is SaPu’s CD-ROM plugin for a PSEmu-style PlayStation emulator plugin system. It is not normally part of Windows.
Where should cdrsapu.dll go?
Place it in the emulator’s own plugins folder, commonly:
<ePSXe folder>pluginscdrSaPu.dll
Do not place it in System32 or SysWOW64.
Can I use ePSXe without SaPu’s plugin?
Often, yes. ePSXe includes internal CD-ROM plugins. Open Config > Cdrom and select the internal option. If it works, the external SaPu plugin is unnecessary for that setup.
Should I download cdrsapu.dll by itself?
No. Use a complete, trusted emulator or plugin package. A loose DLL can be malicious, incompatible, corrupted, or missing a required dependency.
Why does regsvr32 say that DllRegisterServer is missing?
That is expected for a plugin that is not a self-registering COM DLL. ePSXe loads SaPu’s plugin through its own plugin interface.
Does installing Visual C++ fix this file?
Only if the error identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime as a separate dependency. Visual C++ does not replace cdrsapu.dll.

What if the plugin loads but the physical CD does not?
Test an ISO with ePSXe’s internal CD-ROM plugin. If images work but physical media does not, investigate the emulator’s CD-ROM settings or drive access. The DLL itself may no longer be the problem.
