ss32d25.dll is a genuine 32-bit support file from the old FarPoint Spread spreadsheet-control product, not a Windows system file. When ss32d25.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair or reinstall the legacy application that needs it instead of copying a random DLL into a Windows folder.
What this file actually does
ss32d25.dll is associated with Spread, originally developed by FarPoint Technologies, Inc. Its internal description is FarPoint Spreadsheet Control. Historical Spread package documentation identifies it as a 32-bit OLE support DLL used by the product.

Several older programs have included FarPoint components, including business, engineering, financial, hardware-support, and phone-update software. Therefore, the filename alone cannot identify one universal owning application.
The safest repair target is the application named in the error, not Windows itself.
Cause-by-symptom guide
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because ss32d25.dll is missing from your computer” | The application installation is incomplete or the file was deleted | Repair or reinstall the named application |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL is missing, or one of its dependencies is missing | Reinstall the complete application and inspect its folder |
| The problem started after antivirus action | The file was quarantined | Check Windows Security protection history |
| The error appeared after moving the program to another PC | Supporting files were not copied or registered | Use the original installer |
| The old installer fails on Windows 11 or Windows 10 | Legacy installer or ActiveX compatibility issue | Use compatibility settings or obtain a supported package |
| The file exists but the program still fails | A dependency, architecture mismatch, or damaged installation is involved | Reinstall prerequisites and check the application architecture |
| Windows itself reports unrelated missing system files | Broader Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| A downloaded replacement loads but the application still fails | Wrong build, architecture, language, or dependency | Remove it and reinstall the owning application |
Fix 1: Identify the application that owns the file
Do this before downloading or copying anything.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the text around the error. The application name may appear in the title, in a second message, or behind the dialog.
Write down:
- The application name
- The executable name, if shown
- The complete error text
- Whether the error appears during installation or when launching the program
An error during installation points toward an obsolete installer or incomplete setup package. An error when launching an already-installed program usually points toward deletion, quarantine, or installation damage.
Check the shortcut
- Right-click the application’s desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Select Open File Location, if available.
The folder containing the application executable is usually the first place to inspect.
Search for the file
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Enter
ss32d25.dllin the search box. - Wait for the search to finish.
- Right-click any result and select Open file location.
A location inside the application’s own folder is more useful than a copy found in an unrelated directory. Record the full path before changing anything.
Do not assume that a file in C:WindowsSystem32 is correct. This is a third-party application component, and placing it in a shared Windows directory can create version conflicts.

Check installed applications
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
For older desktop applications, the program may not appear in this list. Also check Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
If you cannot identify the program, check recently used applications, old installation folders, backup records, and the names of shortcuts in the Start menu.
Fix 2: Repair the owning application
Use this fix when the application appears in Windows’ installed-app list.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The Repair option should replace damaged application files without removing personal data. The exact options vary by program.
If Repair is unavailable:
- Save the application’s work and configuration files.
- Close the program.
- Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if offered.
- Complete the maintenance wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
What success looks like
The program opens without the ss32d25.dll message, and its main functions work normally. If another missing-file message appears, record it. It may identify a separate dependency that the first error concealed.
If Repair does not work
Uninstall and reinstall the complete application.
Before uninstalling, locate the original installer, license information, configuration backup, and any required data files. For old commercial software, use installation media or a package supplied by the licensed vendor or organization that provided the program.
Do not replace only ss32d25.dll unless the application’s own support instructions specifically require that procedure. A complete installer also supplies related files, registry entries, ActiveX components, runtimes, and configuration data.
Fix 3: Restore the file from antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an old DLL because legacy files can have unusual code patterns. The filename alone does not prove that a file is either safe or malicious.
To inspect Windows Security:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
ss32d25.dllor the application. - Expand the event.
- Confirm that the file path belongs to the known application.
- Restore it only if the detection is clearly a false positive and the application is trusted.
- Run a scan of the entire application folder.
If the alert identifies the file as malware, leave it quarantined and contact the application vendor for a clean installer. Do not restore a suspicious file simply because its name matches the error.
After restoring a file, launch the application. If the same error returns, reinstall the application rather than repeatedly restoring the DLL.
Fix 4: Reinstall missing legacy dependencies
A “specified module could not be found” message does not always mean that ss32d25.dll itself is absent. Windows may find the named DLL but fail to load one of its dependencies.
Historical Spread packages list separate components such as:
MSVCRT40.DLLMFC40.DLLOLEPRO32.DLL
These are old components and are not automatically interchangeable with the latest Visual C++ Redistributable.
The safest procedure is:
- Uninstall the owning application.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the application from its original complete package.
- Allow the installer to install its documented prerequisites.
- Restart Windows again.
- Start the application from its installed shortcut.
Do not download individual legacy runtime files from random websites. If the vendor provides a prerequisite package, use that package. If the application was supplied by an employer, school, laboratory, or equipment manufacturer, ask that organization for the approved installer.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and legacy compatibility
ss32d25.dll is 32-bit. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run many 32-bit desktop applications, but an old installer, ActiveX control, or dependency may still fail.
Try compatibility settings
- Locate the application’s main
.exefile. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the application.
For an installer, apply the same setting to the installer executable before running it.
Compatibility mode cannot make unsupported software fully compatible. If the program still fails, contact the vendor for a newer build or run the application in an isolated, supported older Windows environment.
Do not substitute a 64-bit DLL for a 32-bit one. Do not copy the file into both System32 and SysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, those folders serve different purposes, and manual copying can make diagnosis harder.
Fix 6: Treat the related ActiveX control correctly
Some Spread applications use ss32x25.ocx, the ActiveX control associated with the product. That file may require registration, while ss32d25.dll should not automatically be registered.
regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command. It works only with files that provide the required registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer.

Use regsvr32 only when the application’s documentation specifically tells you to register the related ActiveX control and you have confirmed the file path.
For a 32-bit ActiveX control on 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit registration utility is normally located at:
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe
An example command, using the actual path to the control, is:
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:PathToss32x25.ocx"
To run it:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter the command with the real file path.
- Press Enter.
- Read the result.
A successful registration message means the control accepted registration. It does not prove that ss32d25.dll is repaired.

Fix 7: Update Windows and check drivers only when the symptoms support it
A missing application DLL is not normally a graphics-driver or device-driver problem. Driver work is appropriate when the same program also crashes around a printer, scanner, display adapter, USB device, or other hardware.
First install Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
To check a related device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If the device has a warning icon, open Properties and read the Device status message. Record the device name and status before changing drivers.
When several devices are involved, manually hunting for the correct driver version can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its full version performs the driver installation, but reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when ss32d25.dll belongs to that application.

DISM and System File Checker do not normally recreate a third-party FarPoint DLL. Use them when Windows itself has damaged components, update failures, or unrelated system-file errors.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Then enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
You can also use the full forms:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the DISM command after Windows Update has completed, then run SFC again.
For users who want help identifying which Windows components changed while repeating these checks, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show reported system issues; repairs require the full version. It is optional, and it cannot replace reinstalling the specific application that owns ss32d25.dll.
Use System Restore only when the failure clearly began after a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists:

System Restore is not the primary solution for an application-owned DLL.
Why random DLL downloads are a poor fix
Downloading ss32d25.dll from an unknown DLL archive can introduce:
- Malware or a modified file
- The wrong Spread build
- The wrong architecture
- An incompatible language or dependency set
- A file with no trustworthy provenance
A replacement may also hide the real problem, such as a damaged installer, missing legacy runtime, broken ActiveX registration, or an obsolete application.
Do not copy a downloaded file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
Do not blindly copy it into:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not place it in both folders. Let the application’s installer put its files where the program expects them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe safe sources are the original application installer, approved installation media, the licensed vendor, or the organization that supplied the software.
When Spread 2.5 will not work normally
Spread 2.5 is obsolete. Historical vendor support material identifies an old final build and notes that the software was intended for licensed customers. Vendor discussions also describe installation and compatibility problems with older Spread packages on newer Windows versions.
If the installer itself produces an ss32d25.dll error, the problem may be the installer’s age rather than a missing file. Try the following in order:
- Confirm that you have the correct licensed installer.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Use compatibility mode.
- Install all vendor-documented prerequisites.
- Try the application on a supported older system or isolated virtual machine.
- Ask the vendor or supplying organization for a supported replacement.
Do not treat a successful DLL copy as proof that the complete application is compatible.
FAQ
Is ss32d25.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a third-party 32-bit component associated with FarPoint Spread.
Which application installed it?
There is no single universal answer. Multiple older applications have packaged FarPoint Spread components. Identify the program named in the error, then inspect its installation folder and installer.
Is ss32d25.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
It is identified as 32-bit. Use the matching 32-bit application package and do not replace it with a 64-bit DLL.
Should I copy it to System32?
Usually no. Repair or reinstall the owning application instead.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I register ss32d25.dll with regsvr32?
Not by default. regsvr32 applies only to DLLs or ActiveX controls that support the required registration interface. A related ss32x25.ocx may require registration, but that does not establish that ss32d25.dll should be registered.
Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
A dependency of ss32d25.dll may be missing, or the file may be the wrong architecture or build. Reinstall the complete application and its documented prerequisites.
Can SFC restore this file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not third-party FarPoint application files.
What if antivirus quarantined it?
Check Protection history. Restore it only when the detection is clearly a false positive and the file belongs to a trusted application. Otherwise reinstall the application from an approved source.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What information should I give support?
Provide the complete error text, application name, executable name, application version, Windows version, full DLL path, and any relevant Event Viewer application-error details. This helps determine whether the failure is a missing file, dependency problem, architecture mismatch, or unsupported legacy application.
