If Windows says cefstore.dll is missing or cannot load, repair or reinstall the program that owns it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
cefstore.dll supports file replication and synchronization workflows used by Microsoft ActiveSync and Windows Mobile Device Center. These programs connected Windows with older Windows Mobile devices, Pocket PCs, industrial handhelds, GPS units, scanners, and legacy Outlook synchronization setups.

ActiveSync was used mainly with Windows XP-era systems and earlier. Windows Mobile Device Center replaced it on Windows Vista and supported Windows Mobile 2003 or later devices. Microsoft now describes Windows Mobile Device Center as unsupported and says its original downloads have been removed. See Microsoft’s Windows Mobile Device Center documentation.
The file is not established as a protected Windows component in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. A legitimate copy normally belongs to the parent synchronization program or another application that bundled it.

Historical file inventories associate cefstore.dll with ActiveSync and Windows Mobile Device Center. Some inventories list it under a Windows Mobile installation directory such as C:WindowsWindowsMobile, but the exact path depends on the package and installation.

Fix 1: Identify and reinstall the parent program
This is the safest and most likely solution. The error dialog usually names the executable or application that tried to load cefstore.dll.
1. Note the application name
Read the title bar and text of the error. Look for a product name or executable name before closing it. If the message appears during startup, check which program launches at the same time.
You can also check the installation location:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select the Details tab.
- Find the related process if it is still running.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Inspect the folder and its nearby files.
Do not treat the first copy of cefstore.dll found by Windows Search as automatically correct. The relevant copy is the one expected by the application named in the error.
2. Remove the damaged installation
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Windows Mobile Device Center, ActiveSync, or the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the relevant program.
- Choose Uninstall.
You can also use the older interface:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the damaged program.
- Choose Uninstall.
Restart Windows after removal. This clears locked files and lets the next installation recreate the complete directory.
3. Install the matching package
Use a legitimate installer supplied by Microsoft, the device manufacturer, or the original software vendor. Microsoft’s old Windows Mobile Device Center downloads are no longer maintained, so do not assume that an old Microsoft download identifier still provides a working package.
Use ActiveSync for an appropriate Windows XP-era setup and Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 for its supported Vista-era environment. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, WMDC is legacy unsupported software, so a reinstall may restore its files without making the entire synchronization stack work reliably.

After installation:
- Restart Windows again.
- Connect the device.
- Start the synchronization program.
- Check whether the device is detected.
- Reopen the application that produced the original error.
If the error disappears and the parent program opens, the missing file was repaired correctly. If the same message returns, continue with the architecture and dependency checks below.
For a game or bundled application
If the error names a game or another application rather than ActiveSync or WMDC, do not install the Microsoft synchronization package. Open that program’s launcher and use Verify files, Repair, or the equivalent option. If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application from its legitimate installer.
Fix 2: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit legacy applications. That means a 32-bit ActiveSync-era application may legitimately require a 32-bit cefstore.dll; replacing it with a 64-bit file is not a valid repair.
Check the operating system architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
Then check the installer or package documentation for the application. Use the package intended for that operating system and product generation. A 32-bit package cannot substitute for a required 64-bit installation package, and a newer-looking DLL is not necessarily compatible with an older application.

If reinstalling the correct package produces the same error, the message may identify a dependency rather than a missing cefstore.dll itself.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an old DLL if it considers the file suspicious or if the installation has been tampered with.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the application or
cefstore.dll. - Review the file path and detection details.
Restore the file only when you can verify that it came from the legitimate installed package. If the path is unexpected, the publisher information is missing, or the detection remains concerning, leave it quarantined.
The safer approach is usually to remove the damaged application, update security definitions, run a full scan, and reinstall from a trusted package. Do not restore an unverified DLL simply to make the error disappear.
Fix 4: Repair the related device drivers
If the file error is accompanied by a device that is not detected, repair the legacy synchronization entries in Device Manager.
- Disconnect the mobile device.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
devmgmt.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter.
- Expand Mobile Devices.
- Look for Microsoft USB Sync.
- Right-click the relevant entry and choose Uninstall device.
- Disconnect any remaining cable.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the device and allow Windows or the installed package to reinstall the driver.
If neither entry appears, install the correct device software first and try another known-good USB port or cable. If the parent application works but the device still does not connect, the remaining problem is likely driver, USB, or unsupported-platform compatibility rather than cefstore.dll.
Manually checking old driver versions can mean hunting through several device packages and guessing which component is stale. The device manufacturer’s package remains the authoritative choice for specialized legacy hardware.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other system files are also damaged
cefstore.dll is not normally a protected Windows DLL, so SFC and DISM are not the first fix for an ActiveSync installation problem. Use them when other Windows components are failing too, or when the installation and driver repair steps did not help.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to complete. DISM repairs the Windows component store used by Windows servicing.
Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the affected application.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the command once more after DISM has completed. Microsoft documents DISM image repair and SFC behavior and commands.
Running repair commands repeatedly without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting needlessly difficult. Reinstalling the specific parent application remains the definitive fix when only that application lacks cefstore.dll.
Do not copy cefstore.dll into System32
Random DLL download pages are a poor solution for this error. A downloaded file can contain malware, belong to a different product version, use the wrong architecture, or omit the dependency that actually caused the load failure.
Do not copy cefstore.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another application’s folder merely because a website recommends it
The correct location is normally the installation directory expected by the parent application. Restore the complete package instead of mixing a downloaded DLL with files from another release.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that cefstore.dll requires COM registration.

Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 cefstore.dll
It may produce another error without restoring the missing dependency. Microsoft explains the intended behavior of regsvr32. Use the parent application’s installer instead.
If the DLL exists but still will not load
A Windows loader message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent. Windows may have found cefstore.dll but failed to load a dependency required by it.

Check the exact path shown in the error, then:
- Open the parent application’s installation folder.
- Confirm that the file belongs to that application.
- Check Event Viewer by pressing Windows key + R, entering
eventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. - Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time of the failure.
- Note the application name and any additional module mentioned.
- Repair or reinstall the complete parent package.
Do not download individual dependencies from unrelated sources. The installer is more likely to restore compatible files together.

Modern Windows compatibility limits
A successful DLL repair does not guarantee that the old synchronization program will function on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Microsoft designed Windows Mobile Device Center for an older Windows environment and now marks it unsupported.
If WMDC installs but closes immediately, fails to detect the device, or repeatedly loses its connection, treat that as a broader compatibility problem. Check whether the device manufacturer provides a supported replacement or current connection method. Community workarounds may exist, but they are not Microsoft-supported fixes.

Confirm the operating-system and application architecture, check antivirus quarantine, inspect Device Manager, and review Event Viewer for a missing dependency. On modern Windows, also consider that WMDC itself is unsupported.
