fnt.dll is an old 32-bit application DLL associated primarily with Microsoft ActiveSync, not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file. The safest fix is to identify the program requesting it, then repair or reinstall that program from its original Microsoft installer instead of downloading an isolated DLL.
What this file actually does
The reported description for fnt.dll is “TTF, FON to FNT file converter.” It is associated with software that converts TrueType Font or FON font data into FNT data used by older Windows and Windows Mobile development tools.

The file is most strongly associated with Microsoft ActiveSync, Microsoft’s legacy software for synchronizing Windows Mobile devices with Windows PCs. Some older software databases also associate similarly named files with Microsoft Mobile Application Development Toolkit and Windows CE development media. Those associations are possibilities, not proof of which package owns the copy on your computer.
fnt.dll is generally reported as a Win32, 32-bit DLL. A 64-bit Windows computer can still need it when running a 32-bit legacy application. The operating system’s bitness and the DLL’s bitness do not have to match, but the DLL must match the application that loads it.

Microsoft’s official ActiveSync 4.5 download page identifies ActiveSync 4.5 as legacy software designed for Windows XP SP2 or earlier and older Windows versions. Microsoft positioned Windows Mobile Device Center as the successor on Windows Vista. ActiveSync 4.5 reached the end of mainstream support on July 10, 2012, according to Microsoft’s ActiveSync lifecycle information.
That compatibility warning matters. Restoring fnt.dll may remove the startup error without making ActiveSync reliable on a modern system. If the program is essential, a compatible legacy Windows installation or virtual machine may be more practical than repeatedly replacing files.
Common causes and the right response
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first response |
|---|---|---|
fnt.dll is missing when launching ActiveSync |
Incomplete installation, deletion, or quarantine | Repair or reinstall ActiveSync from its original installer |
fnt.dll was not found after uninstalling software |
A shortcut, service, or startup entry still points to removed software | Identify and remove or reinstall the calling application |
Error loading fnt.dll. The specified module could not be found |
The DLL or one of its dependencies cannot load | Check the application folder, architecture, and parent installation |
| Error appears after antivirus detection | The file was quarantined or removed | Review Protection history before restoring anything |
| Error appears in a Windows component unrelated to ActiveSync | Possible file association mistake or another legacy package | Inspect the executable and installation directory before changing files |
| Error continues after reinstalling | Incompatible software, missing dependency, or wrong DLL build | Use a matching 32-bit package or a compatible legacy environment |
regsvr32 fnt.dll reports an entry-point error |
The DLL is not a self-registering COM component | Stop using regsvr32; reinstall the owning application instead |
The exact wording can vary. Reported messages include “The program can’t start because fnt.dll is missing from your computer,” “Failed to load fnt.dll,” “The file fnt.dll is missing or corrupted,” and “Cannot register fnt.dll.” These messages identify a loading failure, not necessarily the precise cause.

Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load a dependency required by it.
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting fnt.dll
Do this before copying or deleting anything.
Check the error window
Read the complete error and note the executable name if Windows displays it. For example, the message may identify an ActiveSync executable or an older development utility.
Also note when the message appears:
- Immediately after signing in
- When launching a desktop shortcut
- When connecting a mobile device
- During installation or removal
- When opening an older project
- During startup without opening a program
The timing helps distinguish a missing application file from an orphaned startup entry.
Check the shortcut target
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target and Start in fields.
- Record the executable path and its parent folder.
- Select Cancel without changing the shortcut.
If the target points to an old ActiveSync or Windows Mobile installation directory, that application is the correct repair target.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for ActiveSync, Windows Mobile, Mobile Application Development Toolkit, or Windows CE.
- Open the application’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Search for the same legacy software names.
- Select the application.
- Choose Modify or Uninstall if offered.
You can also use Control Panel:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for ActiveSync or another old Microsoft mobile-development package.
Do not uninstall a package until you know which program is generating the error. Multiple old development packages may contain similarly named files.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall Microsoft ActiveSync
This is the most likely solution when the error appears while launching ActiveSync or an old Windows Mobile tool.
Try the program’s repair option

- Save your work and close the affected program.
- Open Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- Select the ActiveSync entry.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the original program again.
A successful repair restores the files expected by that exact application and may also restore dependencies that a standalone DLL download would miss.

Reinstall from the official installer
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Back up any data that the old synchronization software stores locally.
- Uninstall the affected ActiveSync or mobile-development package.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the official ActiveSync package from Microsoft’s ActiveSync 4.5 download page.
- Run the supplied
setup.msi. - Follow the installation prompts.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application before reconnecting a device or importing old data.
ActiveSync 4.5 is officially limited to older Windows versions. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, the installer may fail, the application may install but not communicate with a device, or the program may behave unpredictably even after the missing file is restored.
If the installer cannot run, do not solve that problem by placing fnt.dll into C:WindowsSystem32. Use a compatible legacy Windows installation or virtual machine for the old software instead.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
An antivirus action can explain why a previously working application suddenly reports a missing DLL. It can also mean the file was removed because it was unsafe, so restore it only after checking the detection carefully.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection involving
fnt.dllor the parent application. - Check the detected file path and the application publisher.
- Do not choose Allow on device unless you have verified that the file came from the authentic Microsoft installation and is not a modified replacement.
Microsoft explains this workflow in its Protection History guidance.
If the file came from an unofficial archive, a temporary folder, or an unexpected application directory, do not restore it. Remove the untrusted copy and reinstall the legitimate parent program.
If the file was quarantined from a known Microsoft installation, reinstalling the complete application is still safer than manually restoring the DLL. It gives you a chance to replace related files and correct the installation path.
Fix 4: Check the 32-bit application path
A common mistake is treating a 32-bit DLL as if it were a general Windows component.
A 32-bit legacy application normally loads its private DLLs from its own installation directory or from locations resolved by Windows’ DLL search rules. It may run on 64-bit Windows, but it still requires a 32-bit version of the library and its dependencies.
Check the application folder shown in the shortcut’s Target field. Look for:

Do not assume that:
System32should receive every DLLSysWOW64is a general-purpose 32-bit DLL folder- A 64-bit replacement can satisfy a 32-bit application
- A file with the same name came from the same package
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native system directory, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit compatibility. Neither directory is a safe dumping ground for an application DLL. The correct location is normally determined by the application installer.
If you have an authentic backup of the application directory, compare the missing file with that backup. Do not overwrite a working copy from another old computer unless you have confirmed that both computers use the same application package and architecture.
Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
Windows can report that a module was not found when fnt.dll exists but another library required by it does not.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The safest dependency repair is to reinstall the complete parent application. Do not install random Visual C++ packages, DirectX files, or .NET runtimes based only on a generic DLL website recommendation. There is no verified Microsoft evidence that a particular Visual C++ redistributable, DirectX installer, or .NET runtime supplies fnt.dll.
Use this sequence:
- Note the executable named in the error.
- Confirm its installation folder.
- Uninstall the owning legacy application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the matching authentic package.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application from its original shortcut.
If the error remains, the package may simply be incompatible with the current Windows release. Test it in a supported legacy environment rather than replacing individual libraries at random.
Fix 6: Install Windows updates
Updates are not expected to recreate a third-party ActiveSync DLL, but they can correct Windows component problems that affect application loading.
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart the computer.
Microsoft documents this process in its Windows Update instructions.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows itself is behaving abnormally, other protected components are failing, or the error appeared after broader system corruption. They are not a normal replacement method for a missing ActiveSync DLL.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command normally recreates a missing third-party ActiveSync DLL.

Repeating these commands without identifying the calling application rarely helps. If you want a guided scan while working through corrupted Windows components, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it finds; its free scan identifies issues, while repair actions require the full version. Reinstalling the legacy application remains the definitive fix when that application owns fnt.dll.
Microsoft’s command guidance is available in its System File Checker documentation.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there
fnt.dll is an application DLL, not a device driver. Do not update drivers as the first response unless the error began immediately after a device installation or the affected application is failing while communicating with a supported device.
If a device connection is also failing:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Use Update Driver only if a suitable driver is available through Windows Update or the device manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Do not remove a working device driver solely because fnt.dll is missing. A driver update cannot normally recreate an ActiveSync application DLL.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 9: Do not use regsvr32 unless the DLL is a registration-based component
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for repairing every missing DLL.
The command:
regsvr32 fnt.dll
is generally inappropriate for this file. A converter or runtime-style library does not automatically function as a COM component. Running the command may produce an error stating that the entry point was not found, or it may fail because a dependency is missing. It will not download, reconstruct, or repair the file.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s documentation specifically says that the DLL is a self-registering component and identifies the correct file path and architecture. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.

If fnt.dll worked until a recent application installation, removal, driver change, or system modification, System Restore may be appropriate.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore can reverse system files, registry settings, and installed programs without affecting personal files. It does not replace a proper reinstall of ActiveSync, and it may not be available if no restore point exists. Microsoft describes the feature in its System Restore guidance.

Is fnt.dll a Windows system file?
It is not documented as a standard current Windows 10 or Windows 11 component. Treat it as an application DLL associated primarily with old Microsoft ActiveSync and related legacy mobile-development software.
Is fnt.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The commonly reported file is a 32-bit Win32 DLL. A 64-bit Windows installation can load it for a 32-bit application, but a 64-bit substitute will not work in its place.
Should I copy fnt.dll into System32?
No. The correct location is normally the owning application’s installation directory. Installing a DLL into a system directory does not repair missing dependencies and can expose Windows or other programs to an incorrect file.
Should I copy it into SysWOW64?
No. SysWOW64 is part of Windows’ 32-bit compatibility architecture, not a general storage location for third-party application DLLs. Reinstall the application that requested the file.
Can Windows Update fix fnt.dll?
Windows Update may repair broader Windows component problems, but it will not normally recreate a missing ActiveSync DLL. Use the owning application’s repair or reinstall process first.
Is fnt.dll related to modern games, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no verified file-specific evidence connecting it to a particular modern game, DirectX installation, Visual C++ package, or .NET runtime. If a game reports this name, identify the game’s executable and installation source before installing anything.
What if the error says the file is not designed to run on Windows?
That usually indicates an architecture mismatch, corruption, or incompatibility. Reinstall the matching application package and confirm that it is a 32-bit legacy program. ActiveSync 4.5 may still fail because Microsoft officially limited it to older Windows versions.
What is the final fix if ActiveSync still will not run?
Restore the application from its authentic installer in a compatible legacy Windows environment. A virtual machine can isolate old ActiveSync software from the modern Windows installation while avoiding unsafe DLL replacement.
