Choose Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for a production server that needs vendor accountability, certified integrations, security guidance, compliance evidence, or an escalation path. Choose CentOS Stream for development, CI, hardware and ISV integration, or a self-supported service where avoiding subscription fees and seeing upcoming RHEL changes are more important than formal support.
Do not deploy the discontinued CentOS Linux 7 or CentOS Linux 8 releases. CentOS Linux 8 stopped receiving updates in December 2021, and CentOS Linux 7 reached its update end on June 30, 2024. CentOS Stream is the successor project, but it is not a drop-in replacement for the old rebuild model.

CentOS Linux, CentOS Stream and RHEL are different products
The name “CentOS” now covers two very different ideas. CentOS Linux was a rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL): packages were reconstructed from RHEL source after the enterprise release. CentOS Stream is instead the upstream, public development branch for RHEL. RHEL is the enterprise product downstream of Stream.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That relationship changes what you receive. A Stream package may contain a change intended for a future RHEL minor release. RHEL receives the productized, supported result after Red Hat engineering, quality processes and release controls. Stream therefore provides earlier visibility and a contribution path, while RHEL provides a more controlled production maintenance path.

CentOS Linux is no longer a supported server option
According to Red Hat’s “What is CentOS?” page, CentOS Linux 8 updates ended in December 2021 and CentOS Linux 7 updates ended on June 30, 2024. The CentOS Project lists the same dates. A server still running either release is past its stated update window, so continuing to expose it to untrusted networks creates an avoidable security and operational risk.
CentOS Stream 8 also ended on May 31, 2024. Stream 9 remains listed through May 31, 2027. Those dates are for the named Stream branches; they are not a promise that every package receives identical treatment on every day of the branch’s life.
CentOS Stream vs RHEL at a glance
| Decision factor | CentOS Stream | Red Hat Enterprise Linux |
|---|---|---|
| Position in the development flow | Public upstream branch where changes headed toward future RHEL minor releases are developed and integrated. | Enterprise product downstream of Stream, released as a supported and controlled platform. |
| Support ownership | Community assistance through contributors, forums, wikis, GitHub discussions and tutorials. | Red Hat engineers and support staff under the terms of the selected subscription. |
| Update experience | Earlier access to changes; administrators must validate those changes themselves. | Predictable product maintenance with documented lifecycle options and, where purchased, Extended Update Support. |
| Certification and enterprise tooling | Useful for testing upcoming compatibility, but certification and support commitments vary by vendor. | Designed for certified hardware and software combinations, enterprise security tooling and vendor accountability. |
| Operational responsibility | Your team owns incident diagnosis, workaround selection and most escalation. | Red Hat can investigate product defects and provide an escalation path, subject to entitlement and scope. |
| Subscription cost | No RHEL subscription is required for the operating system; staffing, testing and incident costs remain yours. | Requires a subscription selected for the deployment and support level; pricing depends on the offering, region and terms. |
How the Stream-to-RHEL relationship affects updates
CentOS documentation describes Stream as being built by RHEL engineers, serving as a preview of the next minor RHEL version and allowing contributions that can flow into RHEL. In practical terms, Stream sits between Fedora-style innovation and the stabilized RHEL product, but it should not be treated as a frozen RHEL clone.
Minor releases
A change can appear in Stream before it is incorporated into a RHEL minor release. This is valuable when you maintain an application, kernel module, storage stack or hardware driver that must work with the next RHEL update. It also means that a Stream update can expose an integration issue before your RHEL production fleet sees the corresponding change.
Major releases
The CentOS Project says a new major Stream version is released roughly every three years and maintained for about five years. CentOS Stream 10 release notes describe Stream 10 as the major branch from which RHEL 10 minor versions are created. The notes state that Stream 10 is expected to be maintained until 2030, with the exact date contingent on when RHEL 10 reaches the end of its full-support period.

RHEL’s lifecycle is subscription-based and offers defined support phases. Organizations that need to keep a particular application stack stable for longer can evaluate Extended Update Support (EUS) or another lifecycle option instead of accepting every regular minor update immediately.
Support, security and production operations
What community support means on Stream
Red Hat states that CentOS Stream and CentOS Linux support is provided by the goodwill of users and contributors through GitHub, forums, wikis, tutorials and other collaboration channels. That ecosystem can be highly capable, but it does not give you a contractual response time, a guaranteed fix, or a single party responsible for the complete server stack.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf a Stream update breaks a driver or application, your team must identify the regression, find a workaround, wait for a correction or roll back according to your own procedures. The quality of the result depends on your staffing, test coverage and ability to maintain the surrounding software.
What a RHEL subscription adds
Red Hat describes RHEL as including support, consistent code quality and hardening, a dedicated product security team and a predictable lifecycle. The practical benefit is not simply a help desk: it is an accountable vendor that can analyze a product defect, publish security guidance and help you establish a supported configuration.
RHEL is the safer default when a downtime event has a measurable business cost, an auditor expects support evidence, a regulated workload needs documented remediation, or a hardware and software supplier requires a certified RHEL combination. A subscription does not remove the need for backups, testing or competent administrators; it gives those administrators a formal escalation path and product commitments.

Lifecycle dates you need to plan around
| Release | Stated update end | Operational meaning |
|---|---|---|
| CentOS Linux 8 | December 31, 2021 (updates ended in December 2021) | Discontinued; do not treat it as a maintained server platform. |
| CentOS Stream 8 | May 31, 2024 | Past its listed maintenance window. |
| CentOS Linux 7 | June 30, 2024 | Discontinued; migration should already be underway or complete. |
| CentOS Stream 9 | May 31, 2027 | Current listed Stream branch with a finite, approximately five-year lifecycle. |
| CentOS Stream 10 | Expected through 2030; exact date depends on RHEL 10 full-support timing | Use the published qualification rather than assuming a fixed end date. |
These are project and release dates, not a guarantee that your application vendor supports every branch until its final day. Check the lifecycle of your database, language runtime, kernel module and commercial software separately before selecting a base operating system.

Cost and subscription decisions
There is no single universal RHEL price. Red Hat’s subscription guide describes standard and premium subscriptions, Extended Update Support add-ons, high-performance-computing offerings, and distributed-computing or edge options. The correct cost depends on the deployment, support level, architecture, geography and contract terms.
Compare the subscription with the cost of operating Stream yourself. Include engineer time for staging, regression testing, incident response, security investigation, documentation and after-hours coverage. A free operating-system download can still be expensive when a small team must absorb every failure.
Developer entitlements
Red Hat says its Developer Subscription for Teams can provide no-cost RHEL development deployments for existing Red Hat customer organizations, subject to program terms. Treat eligibility, geography, deployment limits and permitted use as items to verify at the time you enroll. A development entitlement should not be assumed to cover an unrestricted production fleet.
Which platform fits each server role?
Production web, database or business application
Choose RHEL when the service has an escalation requirement, a contractual availability target, compliance obligations, certified components or a business owner who expects a vendor-backed answer during an incident. Use a subscription and lifecycle option that matches the required response and maintenance window.

Development and continuous integration
Choose CentOS Stream when the goal is to test against changes before they reach RHEL. Pin representative images, run the full application test suite on every relevant update, and keep a supported production image separate from the Stream build environment. This arrangement exposes compatibility problems early without making production depend on an upstream development branch.
Hardware-driver and ISV integration
Stream is explicitly identified by Red Hat as a use case for hardware and independent-software-vendor integration. It lets vendors validate drivers, agents and installers against the direction of the next RHEL minor release. Record the Stream branch and update level used for each test so a failure can be reproduced.
Small lab or self-supported service
Stream can fit a noncritical lab, internal tool or personal service when the operator accepts community support, has backups and can test updates before deployment. Do not select it merely because it resembles the CentOS Linux rebuild you used previously; the update position and support model are different.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is CentOS Stream suitable for production?
It can be, but only when “production” means your organization accepts the operational responsibility normally supplied by a vendor. Before choosing Stream, confirm all of the following:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- You can reproduce the service in a staging environment and test Stream updates before approving them.
- Your team can troubleshoot the operating system, kernel, storage, networking and application stack without a contractual vendor response.
- Your hardware and software suppliers support the exact Stream branch and package levels you will deploy.
- You have rollback, backup and recovery procedures that work without relying on an emergency upstream fix.
- The business can tolerate investigating a regression while the community works toward a correction.
If any of those conditions is false, RHEL is the lower-risk choice. The subscription fee buys controlled maintenance and accountability rather than a guarantee that incidents never occur.

Is RHEL worth paying for?
RHEL is usually worth the cost when one serious outage, audit finding or unsupported integration would cost more than the subscription and the staffing required to run Stream. Its value is highest where vendor escalation, security guidance, certification and lifecycle planning are part of the service requirement.
Stream may be financially rational when the team already has strong Linux operations, the workload is low impact, and early access to RHEL-bound changes is more useful than formal support. Make that a documented risk decision, not an assumption that “CentOS” still means a free, stable RHEL rebuild.
Migrating an existing CentOS Linux 7 or 8 estate
Because both CentOS Linux 7 and 8 are past their stated update end dates, migration should be treated as a security and lifecycle project. RHEL is a documented migration path; other enterprise Linux distributions can be evaluated separately if a subscription is not acceptable.

- Inventory each host. Record the release, kernel, architecture, installed repositories, enabled services, storage layout, encryption, backup status and application owner. On a host,
cat /etc/centos-releaseanduname -rprovide a basic starting point; supplement them with your configuration-management inventory. - Classify the workload. Mark systems as production, staging, development, CI, hardware-validation or disposable lab. The classification determines whether you need RHEL support, Stream testing, or a separate migration target.
- Check dependencies. Obtain support statements for databases, language runtimes, kernel modules, agents, backup software and hardware. Do not infer certification from package compatibility alone.
- Build a representative test environment. Restore a current backup or clone the service, then test boot, networking, storage, authentication, monitoring, scheduled jobs, application transactions and recovery procedures.
- Select the transition method. For systems that must retain their configuration, evaluate the supported RHEL conversion or migration procedure for the exact source release. For high-risk or heavily modified hosts, a clean rebuild and data migration may produce a more auditable result. Follow the current vendor documentation for the chosen method rather than copying an unverified command from a forum.
- Validate entitlement and repositories. Confirm that the subscription, repository set, architecture and support level cover the host before removing old repositories or changing production traffic.
- Cut over in waves. Migrate a low-risk group first, monitor error rates and recovery time, then proceed to larger groups. Keep an explicit rollback point and a tested backup for every wave.
- Retire the old images. Remove obsolete CentOS Linux hosts from load balancers, monitoring, automation and disaster-recovery plans only after the replacement has passed its acceptance tests.
Common decision mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating Stream as old CentOS Linux
The old rebuild followed RHEL; Stream is upstream of RHEL. Document the update direction in architecture diagrams and change-approval policies so operators do not promise RHEL-equivalent stability by accident.
Mistake: comparing only license cost
Count testing, on-call coverage, security response and outage investigation. If those costs are invisible in the budget, the comparison is incomplete.
Mistake: assuming a lifecycle date covers your application
An operating-system end date does not extend a vendor’s database or agent support. Maintain a dependency matrix with the exact major version and support end for each component.
Mistake: putting experimental updates directly on production
Use Stream’s early visibility in CI or staging. Promote only builds that pass application, performance, backup and recovery checks, and retain a rollback path.

Quick Recap
A practical selection checklist
- Select RHEL if you need vendor escalation, certified integrations, compliance evidence, predictable maintenance or a supported production configuration.
- Select CentOS Stream if you need to test upcoming RHEL changes, integrate hardware or ISV software, run CI, or operate a low-risk service with community support.
- Use both when development and integration benefit from Stream while production requires RHEL: test the next changes on Stream, then deploy the validated application on RHEL.
- Do not select CentOS Linux 7 or 8; both are discontinued and past their stated update end dates.
