Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The dependable pattern is a root-owned backup script that runs mysqldump at minute zero of every hour, writes a compressed dump to a directory outside the web root, keeps only the retention window you choose, and copies important files off the VPS. Use --single-transaction for online-consistent InnoDB backups, protect credentials in a mode-600 client file, fail the job when any pipeline stage fails, and regularly restore a dump in an isolated MySQL instance. An hourly file that has never been restored is only a hope, not a tested backup.

What an hourly MySQL backup does—and what it does not
mysqldump makes a logical backup: SQL statements that recreate database objects and table data. The result is portable and easy to inspect, but restoring it requires MySQL to execute all those statements. Dump duration and restore duration therefore grow with the amount of schema and data.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →An hourly schedule limits the maximum age of a completed dump to roughly one hour when jobs finish on time. It does not protect a file that remains on the same VPS from disk failure, ransomware, an accidental deletion, or a compromised root account. Retention, off-site copies, monitoring, and restore tests are separate controls.
Plan the policy before writing the job
Choose the recovery point and retention window
Decide how much data you can lose (your recovery-point objective) and how long you must be able to go back. Keep enough hourly files for that window, then consider daily or weekly copies for longer-term recovery. Retention is a policy decision, not a safe constant; calculate the compressed dump size, available disk space, and growth rate before setting deletion rules.

Identify databases and special objects
List the databases that belong in the job. Include routines, events, and triggers when the application uses them. Views are definitions rather than copied rows, so they must be included and later checked during a restore. Do not place the destination under the web root.
Decide whether point-in-time recovery is required
Hourly dumps cannot recover changes made between two dump times. For point-in-time recovery, retain binary logs and record their coordinates with --source-data (or use an equivalent GTID-aware process). If you use --source-data or --flush-logs, coordinate binary-log retention with replicas and recovery procedures; never purge logs still needed for either.
Create a dedicated backup account
Do not run scheduled dumps with an application account or a superuser unless a documented option genuinely requires it. Create an account restricted to the databases selected for backup. MySQL documentation identifies SELECT, SHOW VIEW, and TRIGGER as baseline privileges. Depending on options, GTID handling, and tablespace or locking behavior, LOCK TABLES, PROCESS, and RELOAD (or the privileges needed for FLUSH TABLES) can also be required.
CREATE USER 'backup_agent'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'use-a-long-random-secret';
GRANT SELECT, SHOW VIEW, TRIGGER, EVENT ON `DB_NAME`.* TO 'backup_agent'@'localhost';
-- Add only when your chosen options and MySQL version require them:
-- GRANT LOCK TABLES ON `DB_NAME`.* TO 'backup_agent'@'localhost';
-- GRANT PROCESS, RELOAD ON *.* TO 'backup_agent'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
Use a generated secret rather than a phrase reused elsewhere. Test the exact dump command interactively as this account before scheduling it. If a required privilege is missing, MySQL will identify the object or operation that failed; grant the narrowest permission that resolves that error and document why it is present.
Protect the connection credentials
Put the password in a root-readable MySQL client option file, not in the process command line or crontab. A command-line password can be exposed through process listings, shell history, backups of cron files, or monitoring tools.

Build an atomic, failure-aware backup script
The following example backs up one database, compresses the SQL stream, writes a temporary file, and renames it only after a successful pipeline. A reader will therefore see either a complete dump or no file with the final name.
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -Eeuo pipefail
BACKUP_DIR=/var/backups/mysql
DB_NAME=DB_NAME
RETENTION_DAYS=14
STAMP=$(date -u +%Y%m%dT%H00Z)
FINAL="$BACKUP_DIR/${DB_NAME}-${STAMP}.sql.gz"
TMP="$BACKUP_DIR/.${DB_NAME}-${STAMP}.sql.gz.$$"
install -d -o root -g root -m 700 "$BACKUP_DIR"
trap 'rm -f -- "$TMP"' EXIT
mysqldump
--defaults-extra-file=/root/.my.cnf
--single-transaction
--routines
--events
--triggers
--databases "$DB_NAME"
| gzip -c > "$TMP"
mv -f -- "$TMP" "$FINAL"
trap - EXIT
# Delete old files only after this run produced a complete dump.
find "$BACKUP_DIR" -type f -name "${DB_NAME}-*.sql.gz"
-mtime +"$RETENTION_DAYS" -delete
echo "Created $FINAL"
Save it as /usr/local/sbin/mysql-hourly-backup, then restrict it:
chown root:root /usr/local/sbin/mysql-hourly-backup
chmod 700 /usr/local/sbin/mysql-hourly-backup
/usr/local/sbin/mysql-hourly-backup
The command uses UTC in the filename so files sort consistently across daylight-saving changes and servers in different time zones. set -o pipefail makes a failed mysqldump cause the script to exit even if gzip itself exits successfully. Cleanup happens only after the new dump has been moved into place. For several databases, use a shell array or a loop with one destination per database; do not put untrusted database names into shell text without validating them.
Understanding the dump options
--single-transactionstarts a consistent transaction for InnoDB while permitting normal application writes after a brief initial lock. It is not a consistency guarantee for nontransactional tables, and schema-changing statements during the dump can still interfere.--routines,--events, and--triggerspreserve server-side objects that are otherwise easy to omit from a data-only procedure.--databases DB_NAMEadds database creation and selection statements. This is convenient when restoring under the original name; it has implications when you want to restore into a differently named schema.gzipreduces disk usage and transfer size at the cost of CPU and decompression time.
For MyISAM or other nontransactional tables, --single-transaction does not provide the same online consistency. You may need locking or a different backup method, and should schedule a maintenance window if application correctness depends on a quiescent database.

Schedule it at the start of every hour
On a system using cron, create /etc/cron.d/mysql-hourly-backup:
SHELL=/bin/bash
PATH=/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin
0 * * * * root /usr/local/sbin/mysql-hourly-backup >> /var/log/mysql-hourly-backup.log 2>&1
The five time fields mean minute zero of every hour, every day. The root field is required in a file under /etc/cron.d; omit it if you place the entry in root’s personal crontab with crontab -e. Make the log root-readable and configure log rotation so repeated output cannot fill the VPS.
Run the script manually first, then confirm that cron is enabled and inspect the first scheduled run. On systems standardized on systemd, an equivalent timer can run the same script with OnCalendar=hourly, Persistent=true, and a service that reports a nonzero exit status. Do not run both cron and a timer unless you intentionally want two dumps per hour.
Monitor success, capacity, and retention
Detect failed or incomplete jobs
Alert on a nonzero exit status, not merely on the existence of a file. Check that a newly created file has a plausible nonzero size and a current UTC timestamp, while treating size checks as a warning rather than proof of validity. Send cron output to a root-only log or the system journal and monitor that the expected hourly interval has not been missed.
Prevent the backup volume from filling
Measure the destination filesystem, compression ratio, and daily growth. Reserve headroom for a dump that is larger than usual. If the filesystem reaches a critical threshold, fail safely and alert rather than deleting the newest usable backups. Test the retention command against a temporary directory before deploying it, especially when changing filename patterns.

Copy important dumps off the VPS
Copy selected completed files to a separate host or an object-storage bucket with restricted credentials. The second location should have access controls and its own retention policy. A transfer must occur after the atomic rename, and the transfer job should report failures independently so an off-site outage is visible even when local dumps continue.
Keep binary logs for point-in-time recovery
Use the hourly dump as a base and binary logs as the change stream when you need to recover to a time between dumps. --source-data records binary-log coordinates in the dump; coordinate this with your server’s GTID and replication configuration. Retain binary logs for at least the longest point-in-time window you promise, and verify that purging rules do not remove logs needed by replicas or recovery. A dump without the corresponding binary logs cannot provide the advertised point-in-time capability.
Restore and verify every backup class
Restoration is the acceptance test. Use a disposable MySQL instance or an isolated database server with enough space for both the compressed file and restored data. Do not test by overwriting production.
- Create the isolated target instance and a schema with the required character set, collation, and account policy.
- Select a completed dump from the retention set and copy it into the isolated environment.
- For a dump made without
--databases, restore into a named target schema:
gunzip -c /var/backups/mysql/DB_NAME-YYYYMMDDTHH00Z.sql.gz
| mysql --defaults-extra-file=/root/.my.cnf RESTORE_DB
When the dump was made with --databases DB_NAME, it contains CREATE DATABASE and USE DB_NAME statements. Restore it on the disposable server under that original name, or deliberately transform the SQL for a different schema after validating the transformation; simply supplying RESTORE_DB does not override those statements.
- Require a successful exit status from both decompression and the MySQL client. Capture errors rather than allowing a shell pipeline to hide them.
- Check that expected tables exist and that representative row counts are plausible. Verify views, stored procedures, functions, events, and triggers.
- Run application smoke queries against the isolated schema, including reads and a safe write-and-rollback test if the application requires it.
- Check that restored users and grants match the intended security model without granting production privileges to the test instance.
- Record the restore duration, any manual fixes, and the dump timestamp. Repeat after major MySQL upgrades, schema migrations, or backup-script changes.
Restoring in a sandbox and checking the data is the practical standard recommended by Red Hat guidance; a successful dump command alone does not establish recoverability.

Choose a different tool when the database outgrows the workflow
Logical dumps are broadly available and simple, but they are not the fastest option for every instance. Compare the operational trade-offs before recovery-time objectives become urgent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Tool | Backup and restore model | Online-lock behavior | Best fit | Operational and licensing considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| mysqldump | Logical SQL; straightforward to inspect and restore, with duration and load time increasing with data volume. | --single-transaction gives an online-consistent InnoDB dump with only a brief initial lock; other engines may need locking. |
Small to medium databases, simple hourly jobs, and environments where broad availability matters. | Included with standard MySQL distributions; simple scripting, but usually single-stream and slower at large scale. |
| MySQL Shell dump utilities | Logical dumps with parallelism, compression, progress reporting, and options for cloud streaming. | Online behavior depends on the selected utility and schema; test it against your workload. | Larger logical backups where parallel dump or load and better progress visibility justify added configuration. | Availability and supported features depend on the MySQL version and edition; validate compatibility before deployment. |
| MySQL Enterprise Backup | Physical backup of data files, designed for faster large-scale restore and enterprise workflows. | Uses its own online-backup mechanisms; follow the version-specific operational procedure. | Large instances or tight recovery-time objectives where physical restore speed is more important than SQL portability. | Commercial licensing and additional operational complexity; confirm entitlement and support requirements. |
Oracle MySQL describes physical backup as more appropriate for large-scale backup and restore because original-format data files can be restored quickly. A practical design can combine a periodic physical baseline with binary logs, while retaining logical dumps for portability or selective object recovery.
Troubleshoot common failures
“Access denied” or missing-object errors
Confirm that the script is reading the intended option file and connecting as backup_agent. Compare the failing option with the privileges required by your selected flags. Add only the missing privilege, then rerun a manual dump and restore test.
The job creates a tiny or zero-byte file
Inspect the log for authentication, disk, or SQL errors. The temporary-file pattern should prevent a failed pipeline from becoming a final filename; remove any legacy partial files and verify that pipefail is active.
The dump causes application latency
Confirm that the busiest tables are InnoDB and that --single-transaction is enabled. Look for nontransactional tables, long-running transactions, metadata locks, or schema changes overlapping the dump. Move large workloads to parallel or physical tooling after measuring the effect in a staging environment.
Restore fails because the schema already exists
Use a disposable, empty target for a clean test. If the dump contains --databases statements, restore under its original database name or intentionally edit and validate the SQL before using a different name.
Off-site copies are missing
Separate the local dump status from transfer status. Check destination credentials, network restrictions, object-storage lifecycle rules, and the transfer log. Retry failed transfers without deleting the only local copy.
