NVIDIA unveiled its consumer GeForce RTX 50 Series at its CES 2025 keynote on January 6, 2025. The new desktop lineup initially comprised the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070, all based on NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture.

The generation’s headline features are GDDR7 memory, fifth-generation Tensor Cores, fourth-generation ray-tracing cores, DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation and a broader shift toward AI-assisted rendering. Those technologies can produce dramatic displayed frame-rate gains in supported games, but NVIDIA’s biggest numbers should not be confused with equivalent increases in conventionally rendered performance.

What NVIDIA announced at CES 2025

Jensen Huang’s January 6 keynote marked the transition from the Ada Lovelace-based RTX 40 generation to Blackwell-based RTX 50 GPUs. NVIDIA announced both desktop graphics cards and laptop GPUs, alongside a collection of software and platform features:

#1 Best Overall
GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5070 WINDFORCE OC SFF 12G Graphics Card, 12GB 192-bit GDDR7, PCIe 5.0, WINDFORCE Cooling System, GV-N5070WF3OC-12GD Video Card
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070
  • Integrated with 12GB GDDR7 192bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0
  • NVIDIA SFF ready
  • DLSS 4, including a new transformer-based model and Multi Frame Generation.
  • Reflex 2 with Frame Warp for reducing end-to-end latency.
  • RTX Neural Shaders, which can place small AI networks inside programmable shaders.
  • RTX Mega Geometry for handling more complex ray-traced scenes.
  • Project G-Assist and other PC AI tools.
  • NVIDIA ACE technologies for AI-powered characters and applications.
  • New Max-Q features for RTX 50-series laptops.

NVIDIA’s Blackwell announcement presents the generation as more than a conventional rasterization upgrade. Its central idea is neural rendering: using dedicated AI hardware and software to reconstruct, generate or improve parts of an image rather than rendering every visible result conventionally.

What Blackwell changes

Blackwell GeForce GPUs combine fifth-generation Tensor Cores, fourth-generation RT Cores and GDDR7 memory with new neural-rendering capabilities. NVIDIA also highlights FP4 support for more efficient AI inference, which is particularly relevant to local generative-AI workloads.

RTX Neural Shaders are designed to let developers use compact neural networks within programmable shaders. Potential applications include more realistic materials, lighting and characters. These are architectural capabilities, not automatic improvements in every game: a title or application must implement the relevant technology before users can benefit from it.

The same qualification applies to creator and AI features. NVIDIA says RTX 50-series cards can support local AI workflows using NIM microservices and Blueprints, while high-end designs offer multiple video encoders, 4:2:2 video support and AI-assisted tools such as NVIDIA Broadcast. Those advantages depend on application support, the selected codec, model requirements and available VRAM.

RTX 5090: the flagship Blackwell card

The RTX 5090 is NVIDIA’s maximum-performance consumer GPU. It has 21,760 CUDA cores, 32GB of GDDR7 memory, a 512-bit memory interface and 1,792GB/s of memory bandwidth. Its total graphics power is 575W, and its Founders Edition launched at $1,999.

The 32GB memory capacity makes the 5090 relevant beyond gaming. It can help with high-resolution video, 3D rendering, large local AI models and other workloads that exceed the practical limits of cards with 16GB or 12GB. It is also intended for demanding 4K gaming with ray tracing and high refresh rates.

Independent testing found the RTX 5090 to be genuinely faster than the RTX 4090 in conventional gaming, making it the first GeForce generation in which NVIDIA’s flagship clearly surpassed its predecessor’s flagship. That does not make it a value product: the price, 575W power draw and launch availability all made it a specialist purchase rather than a mainstream upgrade.

The two-slot Founders Edition design was also notable because the RTX 4090 Founders Edition occupied three slots. Partner cards can differ substantially in size, however, so buyers must check the exact model.

RTX 5080: high-end gaming below the flagship

The RTX 5080 launched alongside the 5090 on January 30, 2025, with 10,752 CUDA cores, 16GB of GDDR7, a 256-bit memory bus, 360W total graphics power and a $999 launch MSRP.

It is a high-end 4K gaming card, but it is not a smaller 5090 in any simple sense. The 5090 has twice the listed memory capacity and substantially more compute resources. The 5080’s value depends on the buyer’s resolution, ray-tracing settings, existing GPU and access to games that support DLSS 4.

For users who want Blackwell features without paying flagship prices, the 5080 is the more practical high-end option. It becomes less compelling when retailer pricing approaches the cost of a 5090 or when a buyer needs more than 16GB of VRAM.

RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070

RTX 5070 Ti

The RTX 5070 Ti arrived on February 20, 2025, with 8,960 CUDA cores, 16GB of GDDR7, a 256-bit memory interface, 300W total graphics power and a $749 launch MSRP.

Its 16GB of VRAM is an important advantage for demanding 1440p and 4K settings, especially compared with the RTX 5070’s 12GB. It is aimed at strong 1440p gaming and entry-level-to-strong 4K gaming, although its value falls quickly if market prices move close to RTX 5080 territory.

RTX 5070

The RTX 5070 is the mainstream model of the initial desktop lineup. It has 6,144 CUDA cores, 12GB of GDDR7, a 192-bit bus, 250W total graphics power and a $549 launch MSRP. NVIDIA originally targeted February availability, but the card ultimately went on sale March 5, 2025.

NVIDIA presented the RTX 5070 as capable of RTX 4090-like performance in selected DLSS 4 demonstrations. That does not mean the RTX 5070 matches an RTX 4090 in native rasterization or conventional ray-traced rendering. The comparison depends on AI upscaling and Multi Frame Generation, which increase displayed frames without turning the 5070 into a 4090-class GPU at the hardware level.

DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation explained

DLSS is a collection of technologies rather than a single performance switch:

  • Super Resolution renders internally at a lower resolution and uses AI to reconstruct a higher-resolution image.
  • Frame Generation inserts an AI-generated frame between conventionally rendered frames.
  • Multi Frame Generation generates multiple frames for each traditionally rendered frame.
  • Ray Reconstruction and related DLSS features use AI to improve aspects of ray-traced rendering.

In its CES demonstrations, NVIDIA claimed DLSS 4 could deliver up to eight times higher frame rates in certain configurations. That is an attributed demonstration claim, not an eightfold increase in the GPU’s native rendering capability. The result depends on the game, resolution, ray-tracing settings, DLSS mode and frame-generation support.

Generated frames can make motion appear smoother, but they are not equivalent to conventionally rendered frames. The underlying game still needs to render a playable base frame rate, and latency is tied substantially to that base rate. Artifacts can also appear around fast-moving objects, user-interface elements, particles and complicated geometry.

Multi Frame Generation is therefore most useful when the game already runs at a reasonably responsive base rate. It is not a substitute for raw rendering performance, a fast CPU, good game optimization or low input latency. Support also depends on game integration and, in some cases, driver support.

Reflex 2 and Frame Warp

NVIDIA announced Reflex 2 alongside the new GPUs. Its Frame Warp concept uses the latest mouse input to adjust an already rendered frame before it appears on the display. The goal is to reduce end-to-end latency, particularly in supported competitive games.

Reflex 2 complements rather than replaces a high native render rate. It can improve responsiveness, but it cannot eliminate the latency created by a low base frame rate or poor system configuration. Availability depends on game support.

Laptop RTX 50 GPUs

NVIDIA also announced RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 laptop GPUs. The company said RTX 5090, 5080 and 5070 Ti laptops would begin shipping in March 2025, followed by RTX 5070 laptops in April.

A laptop GPU should not be assumed to perform like the desktop product with the same name. Laptop power limits, cooling, display resolution, memory configuration and manufacturer tuning can produce large differences between systems. A laptop RTX 5090 is not automatically equivalent to a desktop RTX 5090.

Pricing, availability and launch reality

The four desktop cards were announced together but did not arrive together. The RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 launched January 30, the RTX 5070 Ti followed February 20, and the RTX 5070 arrived March 5.

Launch MSRP was also not the same as the price many buyers encountered. Shortages, limited Founders Edition stock and partner-card premiums affected availability. By August 2026, a PC Gamer price-tracking report recorded substantial premiums over the original MSRPs, including approximately $4,399 for an RTX 5090, $1,289.99 for an RTX 5080 and $1,049.99 for an RTX 5070 Ti. Those figures were retailer-market signals on that date, not NVIDIA prices and not permanent market values.

When comparing a card, separate its launch MSRP from its current street price, actual stock status and the price of competing previous-generation hardware. A card that is sensible at MSRP can be a poor purchase after a large markup.

Power, cabling and system requirements

The RTX 5090’s 575W power target makes it a system-level purchase. Buyers should check:

  • PSU quality, wattage and transient-handling capability.
  • Whether the PSU has a native modern 16-pin GPU cable.
  • That the connector is fully inserted.
  • That the cable is not sharply bent immediately beside the connector.
  • Case clearance, airflow and GPU support requirements.
  • The exact length and thickness of the chosen partner card.

Reports of melted power connectors appeared during the launch period. Subsequent testing did not consistently reproduce the problem, and some incidents were disputed or linked to cabling conditions. The practical conclusion is to treat installation carefully, not to claim that every RTX 5090 has a universal connector defect. NVIDIA’s official product information should be checked alongside the PSU and card manufacturer’s requirements.

A small number of RTX 5090, RTX 5090D and RTX 5070 Ti cards were also reported to have one fewer raster operation pipeline than specified. NVIDIA said the issue affected less than 0.5% of relevant GPUs, according to contemporary reporting. Owners who suspect an affected card should contact the board manufacturer about its replacement process.

Which RTX 50 card makes sense?

Choose the RTX 5090 if maximum performance matters most

The 5090 is the right class of product for buyers who want the fastest consumer option for 4K ray tracing, local AI, professional video or 3D workloads and who can support its power and cooling requirements. It is a poor fit for 1080p gaming, small-form-factor PCs, marginal PSUs and buyers seeking strong value from an RTX 4090 upgrade.

Choose the RTX 5080 for high-end 4K gaming

The 5080 offers Blackwell’s feature set at a much lower launch price than the 5090. It is best suited to high-end gaming where 16GB is sufficient. It is not appropriate for buyers expecting 5090 performance or needing more than 16GB of VRAM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the RTX 5070 Ti for 1440p and practical 4K

The 5070 Ti’s 16GB of memory makes it attractive for strong 1440p gaming and some 4K use. It makes less sense when sold near the RTX 5080 or for owners of an RTX 4070 Ti Super who would see only a modest improvement.

Choose the RTX 5070 for mainstream 1440p

The 5070 is aimed at 1440p gaming and has lower power requirements than the higher-tier models. It should be judged on its native and conventionally upscaled performance, not solely on NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 comparison. Its 12GB VRAM can also limit heavy local-AI and creator workloads.

What the announcement ultimately meant

The RTX 50 Series represented a change in emphasis for GeForce. Blackwell brought more compute resources and faster memory, but NVIDIA’s main pitch was neural graphics: AI-assisted upscaling, ray-tracing reconstruction, frame generation, neural shaders and AI workloads working together.

That makes the generation’s value highly dependent on software support. Buyers should distinguish native rendering, Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, latency improvements, video encoding and AI inference rather than treating all of them as one generic “performance” number.

For a new high-end system, the RTX 5090 and 5080 offer clear performance and feature advantages when priced sensibly. For mainstream buyers, the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 are more dependent on VRAM, game support and actual retail pricing. In every case, NVIDIA’s CES claims are most useful when read alongside independent tests that report both rendered performance and generated-frame results.
