Charlie Cox voiced Gustave, the lead engineer of Expedition 33 in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. He later said he had not expected players to feel so strongly about the character: it had not occurred to him that a video game character could prompt an emotional response comparable to one in television or film.
Who does Charlie Cox play in Clair Obscur?

Why was Cox surprised by the fan response?
In a GamesRadar interview ahead of the 2026 BAFTA Game Awards, Cox said he was “completely ignorant” of how passionate fans would be about Gustave. He explained: “It didn’t occur to me that people could feel as strongly about a character generated for a computer game as they could for a character that appears in a television or movie that you’ve created.”

Cox said that before this, “95%” of the people who came to meet him at Comic Cons wanted to do so because of his involvement with Daredevil. That percentage is his estimate based on his convention encounters, not a survey or a measurement of the wider audience.

How long did Charlie Cox record for the game?
At Washington State Summer Con, Cox said his agent asked whether he wanted to do a voiceover and that he spent about four hours in the studio: “My agent asked me if I wanted to do a voiceover. I was in the studio for four hours maybe.” GamesRadar reported the remarks on June 23, 2025.
That is Cox’s account of time in the studio, not a measure of his total preparation or involvement, and it does not describe how long other cast members or the production team worked.

In a PC Gamer interview published March 18, 2026, Cox said the experience had “seemingly opened a new avenue” for his professional work and that he expected to work on another game that year, with a larger role.
