The practical starting point is the $6-a-month, 1 GiB plan. If you value maximum memory per dollar over disk speed, support and pricing certainty, third-party listings put Contabo ahead on paper. Hetzner remains attractive for self-hosting, but its 2026 increases make older “cheapest VPS” guides unreliable.
This guide compares the current low-cost options, shows the real cost after backups and transfer, and gives a sizing and deployment framework for running containers without choosing a plan that looks cheap but fails under load.

What is the cheapest VPS for Docker in 2026?
The lowest price confirmed on an official provider page is DigitalOcean’s Basic Droplet at $4 per month. It includes 512 MiB RAM, one vCPU, 10 GiB SSD storage and 500 GiB of transfer. That is enough for a very small test container, but 512 MiB leaves little headroom for the operating system, Docker, logs and an application.
DigitalOcean’s next Basic tier is $6 per month, with 1 GiB RAM, one vCPU and 25 GiB storage. For a single lightweight service, this is the more realistic floor. The figures are official list prices; billing is per second with a 60-second minimum.

Choose DigitalOcean for a clear, documented starting point
The $6 Basic Droplet is the easiest recommendation when you want a known price, familiar Linux images and extensive provider documentation. The $4 plan is useful for a temporary experiment or an exceptionally small process, but 512 MiB can be exhausted by the host before your container does useful work. DigitalOcean’s documentation and ecosystem are frequently presented as strengths by the vendor and reviewers; treat that as an informed opinion rather than a measured benchmark.
If you add backups, DigitalOcean lists weekly backups at 20% of the Droplet price and daily backups at 30%. On a $6 Droplet, that makes the recurring total $7.20 with weekly backups or $7.80 with daily backups, before tax and other services.
Choose Linode/Akamai when transfer allowance matters
Third-party comparisons put the Nanode near $5 with 1 GB RAM, 25 GB storage and 1 TB transfer. That is attractive for a small API, game server or media-light application that sends more data than it stores. The price and specification are not confirmed here by an official page, so verify the exact plan, region and whether transfer is pooled or metered. Backups, object storage and NodeBalancers are separate charges.

Choose Vultr only after checking IPv4 and the exact region
Reports list a $2.50 IPv6-only option and a $3.50 option with IPv4, but sources conflict. An IPv6-only server can be unsuitable when clients, webhooks or an upstream service require IPv4. Before ordering, check the address type, included bandwidth, disk type and whether the displayed price is tied to a particular location or billing term.

Choose Contabo for maximum RAM per dollar, accepting operational trade-offs
A third-party listing reports about €4.50 or $4.95 for 8 GB RAM and 3 vCPU. On paper, that is dramatically more memory per dollar than the small plans above. The same reporting associates the low price with slower disk performance and less responsive support. This can work for containers that are memory-hungry but not disk-intensive; it is a poor fit for databases, busy build pipelines or workloads that depend on fast random I/O. Automatic backups are reported at $1.85 per month, but verify that amount and retention before relying on it.
Choose Hetzner for value only using 2026 prices
Hetzner raised cloud and server prices in 2026, with reported adjustments in April and June. Older guides often quote a CX22 near €3.79; that figure is out of date. Current third-party readings place the EU CX23 around €5.99 and the CAX11 around €6.49. Shared plans are the sensible budget choice because dedicated-vCPU plans reportedly rose the most. Reviewers still describe Hetzner as excellent self-hosting value, but that judgment predates, or is weakened by, the increases. Check architecture, location, traffic policy and the final invoice before deploying.
Compare the cost that appears after checkout
The advertised VPS rental is only one line of the bill. Build a monthly estimate with these items:
- Compute: the hourly or monthly instance charge. DigitalOcean bills per second with a 60-second minimum, so a short-lived server is not automatically free of minimum charges.
- Backups: DigitalOcean lists 20% for weekly and 30% for daily backups. Other providers generally charge separately; Linode/Akamai and Contabo are specifically reported to do so.
- Public IPv4: confirm whether it is included. A very cheap IPv6-only plan can become more expensive once you add an IPv4 address or a proxy.
- Transfer: compare the included allowance at the same RAM size. A plan with less memory but abundant transfer may suit a static site; a plan with more memory but a smaller allowance may suit internal services.
- Storage: check whether the advertised disk is local SSD, network-attached or an expandable volume. Additional volumes are normally billed separately.
- Tax and currency: VAT, sales tax and exchange-rate charges vary by billing address and region.
Use a simple formula before ordering: monthly total = compute + backup + extra storage + extra IP addresses + expected transfer overage + tax. Do not compare a base price from one provider with a backup-inclusive price from another.

How much VPS capacity does a Docker host need?
No authoritative sizing table was established for this comparison, so treat RAM thresholds as planning rules, not guarantees. Container images, language runtimes, databases and build tools have very different footprints. Measure the actual host with your intended stack before committing to a long-term plan.
512 MiB: experiment only
The 512 MiB DigitalOcean tier can run a minimal container with conservative limits, but the operating system, Docker daemon, DNS, logging and monitoring all consume memory. Avoid compiling on the server, running a database beside the application, or hosting multiple services at this size. Add swap only as an emergency buffer; swap does not create RAM and can make a memory-starved service painfully slow.
1 GB: small single-service host
A 1 GB plan is a more credible starting point for one lightweight web service, reverse proxy or development deployment. Set container memory limits, cap log growth and monitor available memory. Leave room for security updates and short bursts rather than sizing to the application’s idle footprint.
4 GB: several modest services
A 4 GB shared plan gives room for a reverse proxy, one or two application containers, a small cache and basic monitoring. It is still not a guarantee for a production database or a build runner. If the workload is CPU-bound, shared-vCPU contention may matter more than RAM.
8 GB and above: memory-heavy or consolidated workloads
Contabo’s reported 8 GB entry plan illustrates the trade-off: plentiful memory can be inexpensive, while disk latency and support become the risk. Validate storage performance and recovery procedures before putting stateful services there.

Deploy Docker on a low-cost VPS
The following workflow is provider-neutral. Use a currently supported 64-bit Linux image, preferably one with an official Docker installation path, and substitute your provider’s dashboard labels where they differ.
- Create the server: select the region closest to your users, choose a supported Linux LTS image, add an SSH key, and disable password login after the first connection. Record the plan’s RAM, disk, transfer and IP type.
- Patch the host: connect over SSH and apply the distribution’s security updates. Reboot if the kernel was updated.
- Install Docker: follow Docker’s official instructions for your distribution rather than piping an unreviewed script into a root shell. Install the Compose plugin if your application uses a
compose.yamlfile. - Open only required ports: allow SSH from your administration network and expose HTTP/HTTPS through a reverse proxy. Keep database ports private on the VPS network.
- Deploy the application: copy a version-controlled Compose file, create an environment file with restrictive permissions, then run
docker compose pullfollowed bydocker compose up -d. - Persist state deliberately: map named volumes or host directories for databases and uploads. Containers are replaceable; an unmounted data directory is not.
- Set resource and log limits: define memory or CPU limits where appropriate, configure log rotation, and remove unused images with a scheduled maintenance task.
- Test recovery: restore a backup to a separate directory or temporary server, verify application startup and check that DNS, TLS certificates and volumes survive a rebuild.
Common failure modes and fixes
The server runs out of memory
Check free -h, container statistics with docker stats, and the host’s kernel messages. Stop nonessential services, reduce concurrency, cap container memory and move builds off the production VPS. Upgrade from 512 MiB to 1 GB before adding swap; swap is a safety net, not a sizing strategy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →IPv6-only networking breaks an integration
Confirm that the VPS has a public IPv4 address and that your DNS records match. If the cheapest plan is IPv6-only, use an IPv4-capable plan or a properly configured edge proxy, and test callbacks from an IPv4-only network.
Storage fills unexpectedly
Inspect Docker images, writable layers, volumes and JSON logs. Add log rotation, remove old images after validated deployments, and put high-growth data on a separately monitored volume. A large advertised disk does not protect you from an unbounded log file.
A backup exists but cannot restore
Backups are only useful when restoration is tested. Schedule a periodic restore into an isolated path, document credentials and encryption keys, and record the recovery time you actually achieve. Provider backup percentages describe billing, not your recovery point or recovery time.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The plan is cheap but the application is slow
Separate CPU contention, disk latency, network limits and application inefficiency. Measure response time and I/O wait, then test a nearby region or a plan with faster storage. More RAM will not fix a disk-bound database, and a dedicated-vCPU upgrade may not fix a chatty application making too many requests.

A practical decision framework
- For a disposable demo: start with the $4 DigitalOcean tier only if you can tolerate aggressive limits and no stateful workload.
- For one small always-on service: budget at least $6 for DigitalOcean’s 1 GB tier, then add the backup percentage you actually need.
- For transfer-heavy small apps: investigate the reported Linode Nanode allowance, verifying current pricing and overage rules.
- For the lowest apparent price: investigate Vultr’s IPv4-inclusive option and Contabo’s performance before optimizing for the headline number.
- For several containers: compare 4 GB shared plans, using current Hetzner prices rather than archived CX22 figures.
- For stateful production workloads: price backups, snapshots, monitoring, extra storage and a recovery server first; choose the VPS only after the complete monthly total is known.
What changed in 2026?
The main change is pricing, not Docker itself. Hetzner’s increases invalidate many older “under €4” recommendations. Dedicated-vCPU plans reportedly moved the most, which makes shared plans more relevant for a low-cost host. Meanwhile, the spread between a $4 entry plan and a usable 1 GB plan remains small enough that saving two dollars can create disproportionate operational risk. Recheck prices immediately before purchase because third-party figures for Linode/Akamai, Vultr, Contabo and Hetzner are not official confirmations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the $4 DigitalOcean Droplet suitable for production Docker hosting?
It is better treated as a constrained test tier. The 512 MiB RAM leaves little room for the operating system and Docker, so a 1 GiB plan is the safer minimum for a small always-on service.
Which provider gives the most RAM for the money?
A third-party listing puts Contabo at about €4.50 or $4.95 for 8 GB RAM and 3 vCPU. That is the strongest paper value, with reported slower disks and weaker support; verify the live offer before ordering.
Do VPS prices include backups?
Not necessarily. DigitalOcean lists weekly backups at 20% and daily backups at 30% of the Droplet price. Linode/Akamai and other providers charge separately, so include backups in your total-cost calculation.
