For a small group, Gravel Host currently lists the lowest headline price found for a managed The Forest server: $2.99 per month for 2 GB of RAM and up to four players. That is not a universal cheapest-provider verdict: Shockbyte’s comparable-looking entry is listed in pounds, with £7.40 per month for eight players and 4 GB of RAM. Currencies, taxes, billing terms, locations and checkout fees differ, so compare the final total for your country and your actual player count.
The right “still good” plan also needs a nearby region, usable file and configuration access, dependable backups, support and workable refund terms. The prices below are provider-listed offers, not independent tests of latency, uptime or server performance.

Current price and capacity snapshot
The following figures are the plan details displayed by the providers in October 2026. They are not normalized for currency conversion, tax, payment fees or different billing commitments.
| Provider and plan | Listed price | RAM | Player capacity | Advertised features relevant to ownership |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gravel Host Stick | $2.99/month | 2 GB | Up to 4 | Full file access, DDoS protection, instant setup, daily automatic backups retained for more than three years; locations in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia |
| Gravel Host Rock | $5.99/month | 4 GB | Up to 6 | Same provider-wide features listed above |
| Gravel Host Crossbow | $8.99/month | 6 GB | Up to 8 | Same provider-wide features listed above |
| Gravel Host Molotov | $11.99/month | 8 GB | 8 | Same provider-wide features listed above |
| Shockbyte Survivor | £7.40/month | 4 GB | 8 | Automatic updates and backups, DDoS protection, global locations, 24/7 support and a 72-hour self-serve refund advertised on the UK page |
| Shockbyte Cannibal | £13.32/month | 5 GB | 24 | Same provider-level features listed above |
| Shockbyte Mutant | £14.04/month | 6 GB or more | 36 or more | Same provider-level features listed above |
On headline price alone, the $2.99 Gravel Host Stick plan is the lowest listed amount. It also supports fewer players and less RAM than Shockbyte Survivor, and the two prices use different currencies. Calling either one “the cheapest” without a checkout comparison would be misleading.

Which plan fits your group?
Two to four players
Start by checking the Gravel Host Stick listing. Its stated limit is four players and its allocation is 2 GB of RAM. That makes it the natural budget candidate for a small, private group if the selected data-center region is close to everyone and the final checkout total remains acceptable. Do not choose it merely because it is cheap if you regularly approach the player cap or intend to run a heavier configuration.
Five to eight players
For five or six players, Gravel Host Rock is listed with 4 GB of RAM and a six-player limit. For a group of up to eight, Gravel Host Crossbow lists 6 GB of RAM, while Shockbyte Survivor lists 4 GB and eight players for £7.40 per month on its UK page. Compare the total in your currency, the available regions and the provider’s cancellation terms before deciding. The RAM numbers are not a guarantee of identical performance because underlying CPU allocation, storage and software configuration are not specified in the material available here.
Large groups
Shockbyte’s Cannibal listing targets 24 players with 5 GB of RAM, and Mutant lists 36 or more players with 6 GB or more. Gravel Host Molotov lists eight players and 8 GB, so it is not a like-for-like large-group alternative. At this size, ask support whether the stated slot limit is enforced by software, whether extra slots can be added, and how backups and world downloads work before paying.

What “still good” should mean
Capacity with headroom
Use the advertised player cap as a ceiling, not a promise that every session will be smooth at that number. Leave room for people joining and leaving, save operations and any server-side tools you plan to use. If your normal group is four people but occasional events bring eight, price the eight-player tier rather than relying on an over-cap configuration.
Region and latency
Choose a location near the players who will spend the most time in the world. Gravel Host says its locations span North America, Europe, Asia and Australia; Shockbyte advertises global locations. Those statements do not identify every available city or prove that a particular plan is offered in every region. Confirm the exact region during ordering and ask whether moving an existing world to another location is possible.
World control and backups
A persistent world is valuable only if you can recover it. Gravel Host says every The Forest plan includes full file access and daily automatic backups retained for more than three years. Shockbyte advertises automatic backups, but the cited plan page does not establish the same retention period. Verify the backup frequency, retention count, restore procedure and whether you can download a copy yourself. A provider backup is not a substitute for an offline copy you control.

Support and exit terms
Shockbyte advertises 24/7 support and a 72-hour self-serve refund on the UK page. Gravel Host’s listed features include instant setup but the supplied plan information does not state an equivalent refund window or support schedule. Read the operative terms at checkout, including when the refund clock starts, exclusions, cancellation timing and whether unused time is prorated.

“No lag,” uptime percentages and similar language should be treated as marketing unless backed by an independent measurement. No independent benchmark establishes a quality ranking for these The Forest offers. Ask about CPU sharing, storage type, maintenance notices and the remedy for repeated outages, but do not turn an advertised feature into a guaranteed result.
How to compare the final cost correctly
- Set the requirement first. Write down the maximum simultaneous players, preferred region and whether you need downloadable files or scheduled backups.
- Use the same billing term. A monthly price may change with a longer commitment. Record the amount due today and the recurring amount separately.
- Convert currencies before judging. The Gravel Host figures are in US dollars, while the cited Shockbyte page uses pounds. Use the exchange rate and payment provider fee that will actually apply to you.
- Add mandatory charges. Check tax, setup charges, premium locations, extra backups and payment fees. The listed figures do not establish those totals.
- Confirm the plan’s slot and RAM limits. Do not compare a four-player, 2 GB plan with an eight-player, 4 GB plan as if they were the same product.
- Read the exit policy. Save the refund window, cancellation method and rules for downloading your world before starting a subscription.
Managed hosting versus running the server yourself
Managed hosting trades a recurring fee for a control panel, a datacenter connection and provider-handled maintenance. Self-hosting can reduce the cash cost if you already own suitable hardware that can remain powered on, but it transfers networking, updates, security, backups and troubleshooting to you. The available evidence does not establish that self-hosting is universally cheaper after electricity, hardware wear and your time.

- Portable Travel Card Game: Compact design fits easily in bags, backpacks, or carry-on luggage, bringing engaging entertainment to vacations, road trips, or gatherings without bulky components
- Beautiful Hand-Illustrated Cards: Featuring stunning artwork inspired by forest themes with quality card stock that holds up to repeated play while looking attractive displayed or stored
- Easy to Learn, Challenging to Master: Familiar trick-taking foundation makes it instantly approachable for newcomers while unique powers and strategic decision-making keep every game fresh and engaging
Hardware estimates from a 2025 setup guide
A third-party guide dated June 11, 2025 estimates a 2.4 GHz dual-core CPU and 3 GB of RAM for two players, or a 3.0 GHz quad-core CPU and 4 GB of RAM for three or more players, plus at least 10 GB of disk space. It also names a static IP or DynDNS and forwarded router ports. These are the guide’s estimates, not verified official minimum requirements, so confirm current instructions before relying on them.
Self-hosting responsibilities
- Install the dedicated server through SteamCMD and keep the server files updated.
- Configure the server name, player limit, game and query ports, password, autosave interval and difficulty.
- Assign a reachable address, open only the required router ports and secure the host machine.
- Schedule and test backups; an autosave setting alone does not prove that a restorable archive exists.
- Monitor the machine while players are connected and handle crashes, updates and network failures yourself.
If those tasks are unfamiliar, the cheapest managed plan may be better value even when its monthly price is higher than the apparent cost of using an existing PC.
Protecting an existing world when moving hosts
- Make a manual copy first. Download the complete save and configuration files from the current host before cancelling anything.
- Record settings. Note the world name, password, difficulty, player limit, ports and autosave interval so the new instance can be recreated accurately.
- Confirm the destination region and version. A nearby location helps latency, while a version mismatch can prevent a save from loading.
- Upload the save through the new host’s file manager or transfer method. Full file access is specifically advertised by Gravel Host; verify equivalent access with any other provider.
- Start privately and test. Join with one player, check inventory and structures, then invite the rest of the group.
- Keep the old copy until the new server has been stable. Do not delete the original world immediately after the first successful launch.
Common cheap-hosting mistakes and fixes
Choosing by the smallest number
Symptom: The plan looks inexpensive but cannot hold the group or is sold in a currency that becomes costly at checkout. Fix: compare equivalent player capacity, RAM, billing term and final tax-inclusive total.
Best Value
- Beautiful Hidden Object scenes
- Lushly detailed and unique landscapes to discover
- Meet characters that explore the world along with you
- Use your unique magical ability to solve puzzles and uncover clues
Ignoring geography
Symptom: Players report delayed interactions despite the server being online. Fix: move to the nearest available region and confirm whether relocation carries a fee or requires a new instance.
Assuming backups are recoverable
Symptom: A corrupted or unwanted save has no obvious restore point. Fix: test one restore while the world is new and keep periodic downloads outside the provider.
Running at the slot limit
Symptom: Joining is blocked when the advertised cap is reached, or the group has no room for guests. Fix: buy a tier with a higher stated capacity instead of expecting support to override the limit.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Over-trusting “instant setup”
Symptom: The server starts quickly but settings, passwords or saves are wrong. Fix: treat instant provisioning as only the first step; inspect configuration, upload the correct world and test access before inviting everyone.
Is Apex a verified alternative?
A search result associated Apex Hosting’s pricing selector with The Forest, but the opened page presents generalized game-hosting options rather than a clear current Forest-specific price. Features such as unlimited slots, DDoS protection, automated backups, instant setup and a seven-day money-back guarantee appear in that generalized material. Do not treat Apex as a verified current The Forest option until its game-specific availability, region and price are confirmed directly.
Decision checklist
- Does the plan support your real simultaneous player count with some headroom?
- Is the quoted region close to most players, and is it available at that price?
- Can you access and download world files and configuration files?
- How often are backups made, how long are they retained and how is a restore performed?
- What support channel and response coverage apply to your plan?
- What is the exact tax-inclusive recurring charge in your currency?
- What is the refund window, and what happens when you cancel?
- Have you saved a copy of the world outside the provider?
For a four-player group that wants managed hosting, Gravel Host’s $2.99 Stick listing is the lowest stated entry point in this comparison. For eight players, Shockbyte’s £7.40 Survivor listing offers a different capacity and currency basis. Verify checkout totals and terms for your location before deciding, and judge “good” by recoverability, capacity and access—not by the headline number alone.
