A Terraria server is lightweight for a small, unmodded world, but there is no single specification that fits every map and player group. The Official Terraria Wiki gives a small-world memory reference, does not publish a CPU minimum, and distinguishes simple Host & Play from a separate dedicated server. Your practical requirements also depend on whether players are on the same LAN, connecting through the internet, or using a rented machine.
Terraria server requirements at a glance
The clearest published baseline comes from the Official Terraria Wiki’s Server page. It lists 500 MB of free RAM for a small world and immediately qualifies that memory use changes with world size and the number of players. Treat this as an approximate reference for the stated small-world scenario, not as a universal requirement for every game version, large map, modded setup or busy public server.

| Requirement or setting | What the published guidance establishes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 500 MB of free RAM for a small world (Official Terraria Wiki Server page; publication year not stated) | A reference point only. World size and player count change actual usage, and no adjustment formula is provided. |
| CPU | No processor model, core count or clock-speed minimum is stated | Do not buy hardware on the basis of an invented CPU specification. Use a stable, reasonably modern machine and test the workload you actually intend to run. |
| Default network port | TCP port 7777 | Internet players may need NAT port forwarding and firewall rules. Cloud deployments also need the provider’s network controls configured. |
| Default player limit | 16 players, changeable at startup or in the server configuration file | This is a software setting, not a promise that any computer can deliver smooth performance for 16 simultaneous players. |
| Legacy Windows dependencies | The wiki lists .NET Framework 4.0 and XNA Framework in its requirements section | Those entries may reflect older platform guidance. Check the current server package and your operating system before installing legacy components. |
How much RAM does a Terraria server need?
The published small-world reference
For a small world, the Official Terraria Wiki lists 500 MB of free RAM. “Free” matters: the server competes with the operating system, the game client, backups and any other services on the same machine. The number describes the server’s stated small-world context; it is not a recommendation to allocate exactly that amount to a computer that is also running several other programs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- World size: Larger worlds contain more terrain and data for the server to keep available.
- Player count: More connected players create more simultaneous activity, entities and network traffic.
- Mods and server-side tools: The cited requirement does not establish memory needs for modded configurations, plugins or administrative utilities.
- Other workloads: A host machine that is also streaming, recording, running a desktop session or storing other services has less headroom for Terraria.
Because the published page gives no scaling formula, avoid converting the small-world figure into a guarantee such as “X megabytes per player.” If the server approaches the machine’s available memory, the operating system may start paging to disk, which can cause long pauses even when the game process itself has not crashed. Leave practical headroom rather than planning to consume every megabyte.

What CPU is required?
The researched official requirements do not specify a CPU model, minimum core count or clock speed. That absence is important: any precise “minimum processor” claim would go beyond the published evidence. Terraria’s server workload is influenced by world activity, player actions, entity counts, save operations and whatever else the host is doing, so a processor that is adequate for one group may not behave the same way under another.
A sensible way to choose a machine
- Use a reliable computer with a modern operating system supported by the current Terraria server package.
- Prefer predictable single-thread responsiveness and sufficient overall capacity for the operating system and other services, rather than chasing a particular advertised core count.
- Keep the server workload separate from heavy encoding, game recording or unrelated applications when possible.
- Measure the real session: observe lag, tick responsiveness and memory pressure while the intended players explore, fight and travel through the world.
This approach is more defensible than treating an undocumented CPU number as an official requirement. It also accounts for the fact that a small private world and a heavily populated or modded world are different workloads.
Operating-system and software prerequisites
The Official Terraria Wiki’s server requirements section lists .NET Framework 4.0 and XNA Framework. Those dependencies are associated with legacy Windows guidance, and the setup guide itself warns that its instructions may be outdated or below current quality standards. Before installing anything, check the server files shipped with your current Terraria version and the supported prerequisites for your operating system.

The wiki describes server software included with Windows installations and downloadable server files for Linux. Package names, launchers and dependencies can change, so use the files that match the game version your players will run. Do not install an old runtime solely because an older guide mentions it if the current package documents a different requirement.
Choose the right hosting model
There are three practical patterns: Host & Play, a dedicated server on a machine you control, and a rented or cloud machine. The best choice depends less on a theoretical hardware minimum than on who must keep a machine running, how much configuration control you need and whether players connect from outside your home network.
| Option | Availability | Setup and maintenance | Network considerations | Control and cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Host & Play | The host keeps the game session running; it suits a short session or an in-home LAN | Simplest path for a small group; little separate-server administration | LAN play is straightforward; internet play still depends on home networking and firewall conditions | Uses the host’s world and settings; no separate hosting bill, but the host’s computer must be available |
| Home dedicated server | A separate server process can remain available while players join and leave, provided the machine and process stay running | More setup, configuration and update responsibility | Requires local firewall rules; outside players commonly need NAT port forwarding | Best control over world files and configuration; hardware and electricity are your responsibility |
| Rented or cloud machine | Designed for availability without keeping your home PC on | Provider handles the underlying machine; you still manage the Terraria process, updates and backups unless the plan includes support | Open the game port in both the provider’s firewall and any operating-system firewall | Recurring price, location, storage and support vary by provider; the cited sources do not establish current plans or prices |
Host & Play: when the simple option is enough
The Terraria setup guide calls Host & Play the simplest route and describes it as a good fit for an in-home LAN or a short online co-op session. Choose it when the same person can host whenever the group wants to play and you do not need a separately managed, always-available process.

Its limitation is availability: the session depends on the host being in the game and keeping the host machine connected. If the host exits, sleeps, loses network access or shuts down, the group cannot continue through that session. For a persistent world that friends can access independently, use a dedicated process instead.

The exact launcher and configuration fields depend on the current game files. The following workflow follows the options described by the wiki while avoiding assumptions about filenames that may have changed.
- Match the server files to the game version. Use the server software included with a Windows installation or the current downloadable Linux files described by the Official Terraria Wiki. Confirm platform prerequisites before launch.
- Prepare the world and backups. Place the world where the server process can read and write it, and make a separate backup before changing configuration or upgrading software.
- Start the server interactively first. Launch the server executable and use its prompts to select or create a world, set the player limit and confirm the listening port. An interactive start makes errors visible while you are testing.
- Move repeatable settings into a configuration file. Once the interactive run works, supply the documented configuration file at startup so the world, port and player limit are reproducible after a restart. Verify the current syntax in the files that accompany your version.
- Allow the process through the operating-system firewall. Create an inbound rule for the server’s listening port, limited to the networks and players you intend to permit.
- Test locally before exposing it publicly. Join from the same machine or LAN first. Check that the world loads, saves and accepts the intended number of test connections.
- Test an external connection. Have a player outside your home network connect only after local testing succeeds. If local access works but outside access fails, investigate NAT forwarding and upstream firewall settings rather than changing world files.
- Document a restart and backup routine. Record the world location, configuration-file path, server version and shutdown procedure so another trusted person can recover the service.
The setup guide notes that it may be outdated. Treat its broad workflow as orientation, then verify every command, menu label and file name against the current distribution.

Ports, NAT and firewall rules
Default port
A Terraria server listens on TCP port 7777 by default. If you change the port in the server configuration, players must use the new value and the corresponding firewall rules must match.
Players on the same home network
LAN players normally connect to the host’s private address. The setup guide recommends Ethernet where possible because “ethernet is almost always faster than wireless.” That makes a cable a useful optional improvement for a stationary host or a crowded Wi-Fi network, not a universal Terraria requirement.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Players connecting over the internet
A home router usually performs network address translation (NAT). Outside players therefore commonly need a port-forwarding rule that sends the chosen Terraria port to the machine running the server. The host’s operating-system firewall must also permit the traffic. Forwarding a port does not override a blocked local firewall, and opening a firewall rule does not tell the router which internal machine should receive the connection.

Cloud deployments
The Official Terraria Wiki says cloud-hosted setups should open port 7777 on both TCP and UDP. Apply that rule in the provider’s network controls and in the guest operating system’s firewall, following the provider’s own instructions. Restrict administration ports separately; do not assume opening the game port grants or requires unrestricted remote administration.
Player limits and performance expectations
The wiki gives 16 as the default maximum player count and says the value can be changed at startup or in the server configuration file. Increasing the setting changes how many connections the software will accept; it does not establish that your CPU, memory, network connection or world can deliver smooth play for that many people.
Plan around the activity your group actually creates. A quiet building session, a fast multiplayer event and a heavily modded world can place very different demands on the same server. If players report delayed actions or rubber-banding, check server load, memory pressure, local network quality and internet latency before assuming that simply raising the player cap will help.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshooting by symptom
The server starts but nobody outside the LAN can join
- Confirm that the server is listening on the port you configured.
- Check the host operating system’s inbound firewall rule.
- Verify that the router forwards the port to the correct internal address.
- Confirm that the external player is using the public address and correct port.
- For cloud hosting, check both provider-level and guest-system firewalls.
The server runs out of memory or the operating system becomes unresponsive
- Close unrelated applications on the host.
- Check whether the world and player group are larger than the small-world reference context.
- Account for mods or tools that are not covered by the published requirement.
- Move the service to a machine with more available memory only after identifying the workload, rather than buying hardware from an unsupported formula.
Players experience lag despite successful connections
- Compare LAN and internet players to separate local Wi-Fi issues from server-side issues.
- Use Ethernet for the host when practical.
- Watch CPU and memory usage during the busiest in-game activity.
- Check whether backups, updates or other scheduled tasks coincide with the lag.
- Reduce the player limit or simplify the workload as a diagnostic step; do not treat the limit itself as a performance guarantee.
The server will not launch after an update
- Confirm that the server files and player clients are on compatible versions.
- Recheck prerequisites against the current package instead of relying on the older setup guide.
- Review configuration-file syntax and paths for settings that changed during the update.
- Restore the last known-good world and configuration backup if a file was damaged.
Costs, maintenance and safety
Host & Play avoids a separate hosting invoice but ties availability to the host’s game session. A home dedicated server uses hardware and electricity you already own. A rented or cloud machine adds a recurring charge, while the actual price, region, storage, support and included management vary by provider; no current provider comparison is established here.
Whichever model you choose, maintenance is part of the requirement:
- Back up world files before updates and before major configuration changes.
- Keep a copy outside the live server machine so a disk failure does not destroy both the world and its backup.
- Record who can change the configuration and who can access the host.
- Open only the network ports needed for Terraria and administer the machine through a separately protected method.
- Tell players the server version, address, port and planned maintenance window.
How to decide what you need
- Short session with people in the same home: Start with Host & Play. Use a wired connection for the host if Wi-Fi is unreliable.
- Regular group that wants the world available between sessions: Run a dedicated server on a machine that can stay powered and connected, then configure the firewall and any router forwarding.
- Players in different locations and no home machine available: Consider a rented or cloud machine, checking its current network controls, storage, region and support before committing.
- Large, heavily active or modded setup: Treat the published small-world memory number as insufficient evidence for sizing. Prototype with the intended world and player activity, monitor resource use and leave headroom.
Bottom line
For a small Terraria world, the official reference is 500 MB of free RAM, but actual memory use rises with world size and player count. No official CPU minimum is stated in the cited requirements, so avoid made-up processor specifications. Choose Host & Play for simple, temporary co-op; choose a dedicated process for a world that should remain available; and choose rented hosting when you want that availability without maintaining a home machine. Whatever the model, verify current package requirements, protect the world with backups, and configure port 7777, NAT and firewalls deliberately rather than assuming a successful launch means remote players can connect.
