What Chef’s Adventure server files are you installing?
Chef’s Adventure is Haza’s Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. Its progression centers on more than 200 quests, cooking with Farmer’s Delight and addons, exploration content from Alex’s Mobs and Alex’s Caves, Atmospheric, and a Create 1.6 cooking factory. The relevant server target is specifically V1.0.4, not an earlier or later pack release.

The CurseForge listing snapshot recorded 34,767 total downloads in 2025. That number describes the listing at the time of the snapshot, not a guaranteed current count or a measure of server capacity.
Prerequisites before you start
- A computer or rented server that can remain online while friends play.
- At least several gigabytes of free disk space for the 483 MB archive, extracted files, generated world, logs, and backups.
- A 64-bit Java 17 runtime. Forge’s 1.20.1 documentation identifies Java 17 and a 64-bit JVM as prerequisites.
- Permission to create files, run Java programs, and adjust the host firewall. Router changes require administrator access to the router.
- The official V1.0.4 server archive and the matching client profile for each player.
Do not install the server inside a folder that is synchronized, automatically cleaned, or shared with unrelated Minecraft instances. A dedicated directory makes backups and troubleshooting much safer.

Step 1: Download and extract the official server package
- Open the Chef’s Adventure V1.0.4 release on CurseForge and download 1.0.4 Chefs Adventure Server Files.zip. Do not substitute the client ZIP, a generic Forge installer, or files from another release.
- Create a new folder dedicated to this server, such as
Chef-Adventure-Server-1.0.4. - Extract the ZIP directly into that folder. Preserve the archive’s directory structure, filenames, configuration folders, libraries, mods, and included startup files. Do not rename or omit pack folders.
- After extraction, identify the supplied Forge server script or the launch command provided by the pack files. Use that supplied launcher rather than assembling a different command from memory.
The server archive is the authoritative baseline for this release. Copying individual mods from a client installation can omit server-side configuration or introduce files that do not belong on a dedicated server.
Step 2: Install and verify 64-bit Java 17
Forge’s stated requirement is an installation of the Java 17 Development Kit and a 64-bit Java Virtual Machine. A newer or older Java executable selected by your operating system can cause launch failures even when Java 17 is installed elsewhere.
- Install a 64-bit Java 17 distribution appropriate for your operating system.
- Open a terminal or command prompt and run
java -version. - Confirm that the reported major version is 17 and that the installation is 64-bit. If the output points to another Java location, correct your PATH or use the Java executable selected by the pack’s launcher.
- Keep note of the Java path. It is useful when a startup script accidentally calls an unrelated system Java installation.
An “Unsupported class version” message, an immediate Java error, or a launcher that reports an incompatible runtime usually means the server is not using 64-bit Java 17. Check the executable actually invoked by the startup script, not only the Java version installed on the machine.

Step 3: Start the Forge server for the first time
- Run the Forge server script included in the extracted Chef’s Adventure files, or run the command specified by those files.
- Watch the console during startup. On a first launch, Minecraft may stop before completing startup and create
eula.txt. - Open
eula.txt, read the agreement, and change the setting fromeula=falsetoeula=trueif you agree to it. - Save the file and run the same Forge launcher again.
- Leave the server running until it finishes creating the initial world and reaches a usable server prompt. World generation can take longer than a later restart.
- Stop the server from its console using the normal stop command before editing configuration files, moving the world, or making a backup.
Stopping the process by closing the window or killing Java can leave region and player data in an unsafe state. Always use the server console’s stop operation whenever possible.
Step 4: Set memory without guessing a hard requirement
Chef’s Adventure does not have an authoritative, pack-specific minimum RAM figure or a published tested player capacity in the available release information. Memory use depends on the number of players, view distance, simulation distance, loaded chunks, exploration, and other server settings.
A general CurseForge guide describes 6–8 GB as a starting range for heavy modpacks. Treat that as general guidance, not a Chef’s Adventure guarantee. Begin conservatively in the pack’s JVM argument file or startup script, then increase the allocation only when logs and observed performance show memory pressure.

- Leave enough RAM for the operating system and other services. Allocating nearly all physical memory to Java can make the whole machine unstable.
- Increase memory in measured steps rather than assigning a very large value immediately.
- Look for sustained memory pressure, frequent garbage-collection pauses, or repeated server lag in logs before changing the setting.
- Record each change so you can revert if startup becomes slower or the host begins swapping.
RAM allocation cannot fix every lag problem. Chunk-generation load, CPU speed, storage performance, network latency, and excessive view distance can all limit tick performance.
Step 5: Let the world finish generating and establish a backup routine
After the first successful launch, connect locally if possible and allow the world to generate before inviting others. Exploration creates more chunks and therefore more disk and CPU work. Stop the server cleanly before copying the world or configuration.
What to include in a backup
- The world folder, including all dimensions and region data.
- The server’s configuration files and pack-specific settings.
- Player data, permissions, whitelist files, and other administration files you have changed.
- The startup script and JVM argument file, so the launch settings can be restored.
Safe backup sequence
- Announce a short maintenance window to players.
- Use the server console’s stop command and wait for the process to exit.
- Copy the world and configuration data to a separate drive or storage location.
- Label the backup with the date and pack version, such as
Chef-Adventure-1.0.4-2025-04-08. - Restart the server and verify that the world loads before declaring the backup routine complete.
Step 6: Make the server reachable to friends
Players on the same home network can usually connect through the host computer’s local address. Friends outside the LAN need a reachable network path. Mojang’s Java server documentation notes that network configuration such as port 25565 may be required for outside connections.

For players on the same LAN
- Confirm the server is running and listening.
- Give the joining player the host computer’s local IP address and the server port if it is not the default.
- Allow Java or the server process through the host operating system’s firewall when prompted.
For players outside the LAN
- Reserve or identify the host computer’s local address so the router’s forwarding rule does not point to a different device later.
- In the router’s administration interface, forward TCP traffic for the server port, normally 25565, to the host computer’s local address.
- Permit the same port through the computer’s firewall.
- Give friends the host’s reachable public address and port. Do not give out a changing local address such as
192.168.x.xto internet players. - Test from a network outside the home LAN, such as a phone hotspot. Testing from inside the same network can produce misleading results on routers that do not support hairpin connections.
Never expose unrelated administrative ports. If outside players still cannot connect, first verify that the server is actually running and listening, then check the firewall rule, router forwarding target, and address being shared. Some internet connections do not provide a directly reachable public address; in that case, router forwarding alone may not work.

Each player must install Chef’s Adventure 1.0.4.zip with Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. The server and clients should have synchronized mods and configuration files. A missing mod, an extra mod, or a different release commonly causes a connection rejection before a player reaches the world.
Client checklist
- Use the V1.0.4 client profile, not a profile from another Chef’s Adventure release.
- Confirm Minecraft is 1.20.1.
- Confirm the loader is Forge.
- Do not remove or add mods casually. Even a client-only change can create a mismatch if it alters registries or required dependencies.
- Close the game completely after installing or changing the profile before trying to connect again.
When troubleshooting, compare the client’s mod and configuration folders directly with the server package rather than relying on memory. Keep a clean copy of the official V1.0.4 profile so a player can reinstall without carrying over experimental changes.

What changed in V1.0.4?
The V1.0.4 changelog records several changes that affect setup and in-game orientation:
- Official server files were added.
- Waystones were added.
- JourneyMap was removed.
- FTB Chunks became the map source.
If a player expects the old JourneyMap minimap, press M to open the FTB Chunks map screen and re-enable the minimap there, as the changelog recommends. This is a client interface change, not evidence that the server failed to load.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| “Unsupported class version” or a Java launch error | The launcher is using the wrong Java executable or a 32-bit runtime. | Run java -version, verify Java 17 and 64-bit status, then inspect the startup script’s Java path. |
| The window stops immediately on first launch | The EULA has not been accepted. | Open eula.txt, set eula=true after reading it, save, and restart. |
| Missing-mod, registry, or channel mismatch | The client and server are on different pack releases or have different files. | Reinstall the exact V1.0.4 client profile and compare it with the official V1.0.4 server package. |
| Friends cannot connect from the internet | The server is stopped, the firewall blocks it, the router forwards the wrong device, or the wrong address was shared. | Verify the listening server, firewall permission, port-forwarding target, port 25565, and reachable address from an external network. |
| The map or minimap appears to be missing | JourneyMap was removed in V1.0.4 and FTB Chunks is now used. | Open the FTB Chunks map with M and enable its minimap. |
| Severe lag after several players explore | Chunk generation, view distance, CPU, storage, or memory pressure may be limiting the server. | Check logs and resource usage, reduce view or simulation distance if necessary, and change JVM memory only when evidence supports it. |
Use logs instead of repeated reinstalls
The first error in the server log is usually more useful than the final shutdown line. Record the exact message, the Java version reported by the launcher, and whether the failure occurs before or after the EULA check. For connection mismatches, have both sides compare the pack version and the first missing or unexpected mod named in the client’s disconnect message.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting is appropriate when you want direct access to the files and are comfortable maintaining Java, Forge, networking, backups, and uptime. A managed service can remove much of that operational work, but you trade some control for the provider’s panel, policies, support model, and recurring price.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted server | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | You download and extract the official ZIP, install Java 17, launch Forge, accept the EULA, and configure networking. | The provider may offer a preconfigured or one-click Chef’s Adventure option; verify that it is for Minecraft 1.20.1 and V1.0.4. |
| File and backup control | Full control over worlds, configs, JVM arguments, backup location, and restore process. | Control depends on the panel and access supplied by the provider. Confirm file-manager, SFTP, and backup capabilities before committing. |
| Network administration | You handle firewall rules, port forwarding, address changes, and outside-LAN testing. | The provider normally handles public network exposure, while you still manage player access and server settings. |
| Recurring cost | No hosting subscription, but you pay the electricity, hardware, storage, and internet costs. | A recurring hosting charge applies; current pricing and availability can change. |
| Support | You diagnose Java, Forge, mod, and network failures yourself. | Support scope varies. Check whether the provider supports this exact pack release rather than only generic Forge servers. |
| JVM and mod changes | You can edit JVM arguments and pack files directly, subject to your hardware. | Many hosts allow these changes through a panel or SFTP, but limits and permissions differ by plan. |
WinterNode currently advertises one-click Chef’s Adventure hosting for Minecraft 1.20.1 with control-panel, file-manager, and SFTP access. Availability, supported versions, terms, and pricing can change, so verify those details before ordering. A managed plan is not a substitute for matching the server and client release: players still need the identical V1.0.4 profile.

- Download the official 1.0.4 Chefs Adventure Server Files.zip.
- Extract it into a new dedicated server folder without changing its structure.
- Install and verify 64-bit Java 17.
- Run the included Forge launcher once.
- Set

- Allow the world to generate, then stop the server cleanly.
- Create a tested backup of the world and configuration files.
- Allow the server through the host firewall.
- For internet play, forward port 25565 to the host and test from outside the LAN.
- Give every player the matching Chef’s Adventure 1.0.4 client profile for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- If the minimap is missing, use the FTB Chunks map screen and the M key rather than reinstalling JourneyMap.
Final operating advice
Keep the server archive, client profile, and any modified configuration together and label them V1.0.4. Do not update one side independently. Before changing mods, Java, memory, or network settings, stop the server and make a dated backup. When a problem appears, isolate it in this order: Java and launcher, EULA, pack-file parity, server listening state, firewall and router, then performance resources. That sequence resolves the most common Chef’s Adventure setup failures without risking the world.
