Deploy Flask behind Nginx and uWSGI on Ubuntu by running an importable Flask WSGI callable in a non-root systemd service, handing requests to it over a Unix socket, and letting Nginx serve public HTTP traffic and static files. This replaces Flask’s development server, which is intended only for local development and is not designed to be secure, stable, or efficient in production.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
The procedure below creates a virtual environment, exposes wsgi:app, configures four example uWSGI workers, starts them at boot with systemd, and connects Nginx to the same socket. Adjust paths, domain names, worker counts, and static-file locations to your application.

How the production request path works
Flask is a WSGI application. A production deployment normally places a WSGI server behind a dedicated HTTP server: Nginx accepts connections from browsers, handles public HTTP concerns, serves static assets, and forwards dynamic requests to uWSGI. uWSGI imports a Python module and callable, conventionally written as wsgi:app.
The resulting path is:
- A client requests
http://example.com/. - Nginx receives the request on port 80.
- Nginx serves a matching static file directly, or encodes the request with
uwsgi_paramsand sends it through the Unix socket. - uWSGI selects a worker, imports
wsgi.py, calls the Flask object namedapp, and returns the response.
Only Nginx should be publicly exposed. Do not run uWSGI as root: Flask’s deployment documentation warns that doing so would cause application code to run with root privileges.

Prerequisites and a safe project layout
Use a sudo-capable, non-root Ubuntu account. You need an application that imports successfully, a DNS name or server IP for Nginx, and enough disk and memory for Python dependencies plus your worker processes. The example assumes the account is deploy and the project is /home/deploy/myproject.
Install operating-system packages
sudo apt update
sudo apt install python3 python3-venv python3-pip nginx
Create the project directory and virtual environment:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →mkdir -p /home/deploy/myproject
cd /home/deploy/myproject
python3 -m venv myprojectenv
source myprojectenv/bin/activate
pip install Flask uWSGI
Install your application’s pinned dependencies at this point, for example with pip install -r requirements.txt. Keep the virtual environment outside version control and deploy the same dependency set used in testing.
Recommended files
/home/deploy/myproject/
myprojectenv/
wsgi.py
myproject.ini
myproject/
__init__.py
static/
The service will use /home/deploy/myproject as its working directory. Relative imports and relative paths should therefore be tested from that directory, not from an arbitrary shell location.
Expose an importable Flask WSGI callable
uWSGI must import a module without starting Flask’s development server. A minimal wsgi.py is:
from myproject import app
if __name__ == "__main__":
app.run()
The app.run() guard is safe because it executes only when the file is run directly. uWSGI imports the module, so the guarded block is skipped. You may remove the block entirely when the development server is not needed.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
For an application factory, create the object before exposing it:
from myproject import create_app
app = create_app()
In both cases, the target remains wsgi:app: the first part is the Python module, and the second is the callable or Flask application object inside it. Test the import before configuring Nginx:
cd /home/deploy/myproject
/home/deploy/myproject/myprojectenv/bin/python -c "from wsgi import app; print(app)"
An import error here will also prevent the systemd service from starting.

Configure uWSGI over a Unix socket
Create /home/deploy/myproject/myproject.ini:
[uwsgi]
module = wsgi:app
master = true
processes = 4
socket = /home/deploy/myproject/myproject.sock
chmod-socket = 660
vacuum = true
die-on-term = true
What each setting does
| Setting | Purpose |
|---|---|
module = wsgi:app |
Imports the app object from wsgi.py. |
master = true |
Runs uWSGI’s master process, which manages workers and orderly shutdown. |
processes = 4 |
Starts four worker processes in this example. It is a starting configuration, not a measured performance result. |
socket = ... |
Creates the local Unix socket Nginx will use instead of exposing a TCP port. |
chmod-socket = 660 |
Allows the owner and group to read and write the socket while denying access to other users. |
vacuum = true |
Removes the socket when uWSGI exits. |
die-on-term = true |
Lets systemd stop uWSGI cleanly when it sends a termination signal. |
Four workers mirrors Flask’s documented example (--master -p 4). Flask also describes CPU times two as a possible starting heuristic; validate worker count against your application’s memory use, request mix, and machine rather than treating it as a benchmark or universal rule.
You can verify the configuration manually before adding systemd:
cd /home/deploy/myproject
/home/deploy/myproject/myprojectenv/bin/uwsgi --ini myproject.ini
Stop it with Ctrl-C after confirming that the socket is created. Do not bind uWSGI’s public HTTP listener for the Nginx deployment; the Unix socket keeps the application handoff local.
Run uWSGI with systemd
Create /etc/systemd/system/myproject.service:
[Unit]
Description=uWSGI instance to serve myproject
After=network.target
[Service]
User=deploy
Group=www-data
WorkingDirectory=/home/deploy/myproject
Environment="PATH=/home/deploy/myproject/myprojectenv/bin"
ExecStart=/home/deploy/myproject/myprojectenv/bin/uwsgi --ini myproject.ini
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Why these service fields matter
- User=deploy: application code and Python run as the unprivileged deployment account.
- Group=www-data: the socket’s group can match Nginx’s worker group.
- WorkingDirectory: makes the project directory the import and relative-path base.
- Environment=PATH: puts the virtual environment’s executables first.
- ExecStart: calls the exact uWSGI binary installed in that environment.
- WantedBy=multi-user.target: permits automatic startup during a normal multi-user boot.
Load, start, enable, and inspect the unit:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl start myproject
sudo systemctl enable myproject
sudo systemctl status myproject
enable affects future boots; it does not replace start for the current boot. A healthy service should remain active and create /home/deploy/myproject/myproject.sock.
Connect Nginx to the uWSGI socket
Create /etc/nginx/sites-available/myproject:
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com;
location /static/ {
alias /home/deploy/myproject/myproject/static/;
}
location / {
include uwsgi_params;
uwsgi_pass unix:/home/deploy/myproject/myproject.sock;
}
}
Replace example.com with the hostname clients will use. The alias path must end with a slash and must point to the directory that actually contains your static files. Requests beginning with /static/ are served by Nginx; all other paths are passed to uWSGI.
Enable and validate the server block
sudo ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/myproject /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/myproject
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx
Run nginx -t before every reload. If the default site catches the request instead, remove or disable its enabled link after confirming that no other application relies on it. Test locally with the configured host header:
curl -i -H 'Host: example.com' http://127.0.0.1/
For a real domain, point its DNS record to the Ubuntu server before testing from the public internet. HTTPS, certificate automation, request-size limits, and access logging are separate Nginx concerns; add them after the HTTP path works.
Socket permissions and filesystem access
Both the socket mode and every parent directory must permit Nginx to reach the file. With Group=www-data and chmod-socket = 660, the Nginx worker account must belong to the socket’s group or otherwise have equivalent access. Check the result:
ls -l /home/deploy/myproject/myproject.sock
namei -l /home/deploy/myproject/myproject.sock
The namei output exposes directory permissions that are easy to overlook. A socket can show the right group while a parent directory denies traversal. Application files must also be readable by deploy, and static files must be readable by the Nginx worker. Avoid making the entire home directory world-readable merely to fix one permission error; grant the narrow directory access required by the service.

If your distribution uses a different Nginx worker account, confirm it in /etc/nginx/nginx.conf and align the socket group accordingly. Restart uWSGI after changing its unit or socket settings:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart myproject
sudo systemctl reload nginx
Troubleshoot common failures
502 Bad Gateway
- Check whether uWSGI is running:
sudo systemctl status myproject. - Confirm that the
socketvalue inmyproject.iniand theuwsgi_passpath match character for character. - Check Nginx’s error log for “No such file” or connection errors.
- Verify that the socket is recreated after a service restart and that Nginx can traverse its parent directories.
Permission denied on the socket
Inspect socket ownership and mode with ls -l, verify Group=www-data, confirm chmod-socket = 660, and check each parent directory with namei -l. If Nginx runs under another group, use that group in the service and restart uWSGI.
Import or “no application found” errors
Run the virtual environment’s Python import command from WorkingDirectory. Confirm that wsgi.py exists, that its imports are installed in the same virtual environment referenced by ExecStart, and that the target really is wsgi:app. An application factory must be called so that app is an actual object when uWSGI imports the module.
The service starts and immediately exits
Read the unit journal:
sudo journalctl -u myproject --no-pager -n 100
Look for missing dependencies, syntax errors, an incorrect working directory, or a development-server call executed during import. Keep app.run() behind the main guard or remove it.

Check that the URL prefix and filesystem path correspond. In the example, /static/app.css maps beneath /home/deploy/myproject/myproject/static/. Confirm the file exists, Nginx can read it, and the alias directive—not a guessed relative path—points to the directory.
Deploying under a URL prefix
If the Flask application is mounted below a prefix such as /app/ rather than at the domain root, configure the application’s SCRIPT_NAME and the corresponding uWSGI modifier consistently. Nginx must strip or preserve the prefix exactly as the Flask routing configuration expects. Flask’s uWSGI guidance demonstrates a named-location and try_files pattern for this arrangement. Test generated URLs, redirects, static paths, and form submissions specifically; a root deployment working correctly does not prove a prefixed deployment is correct.
Choosing workers and operating the service
Worker count is a capacity setting, not a promise of throughput. More processes can improve concurrency for I/O-bound requests but consume additional memory; CPU-heavy work can make excessive workers contend for cores. Begin with the four-worker example or a CPU-times-two starting point, then observe memory, latency, error rates, and queueing under your own traffic. Change processes, restart the service, and record the effect.
Keep logs available through both systemd and Nginx. Useful routine checks include:

A repeatable release and rollback procedure
Use the same order for every release so that a code change, dependency change, or configuration change can be isolated. First copy or check out the new application into the project directory and install its pinned dependencies in the existing virtual environment. Run the import test from the service working directory. This catches missing packages and syntax errors before systemd replaces healthy workers.
Next inspect myproject.ini and the unit file for accidental path changes. If either file changed, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload. Restart uWSGI and immediately check systemctl status and the recent journal. Confirm that the socket disappears and is recreated as expected, then make a local request through Nginx with the configured host header. A successful HTTP response verifies the complete path rather than only the Python import.
Keep the previous application revision and dependency list available until the new revision has passed these checks. If the service will not start or Nginx returns 502, stop the failed release, restore the prior revision, reinstall its dependencies if necessary, and restart the service. Because Nginx continues to point to the same socket, rollback does not require changing the public server block.
Security and exposure boundaries
The Unix socket is an intentional boundary: uWSGI accepts local requests from Nginx instead of listening on a public TCP port. Do not publish a second uWSGI HTTP listener “for testing” and leave it enabled. Test through Nginx so host routing, static-file handling, and the production request path are exercised together.
Run the application with the least privilege needed to read its code and write only the locations it genuinely requires. The service account should not be root, and the socket should not be world-writable. A mode of 660 gives the owner and group access while excluding other users; combine it with directory permissions that allow Nginx to traverse only the required path. Static content needs read access for the Nginx worker, but that does not require making the entire project writable.
After the HTTP path works, configure the surrounding server controls appropriate to your environment, including DNS, firewall rules, HTTPS, backups, updates, and monitoring. These are operational responsibilities outside the basic uWSGI handoff, but omitting them leaves a technically working deployment unprepared for public traffic.
Cost and hosting choices
This pattern is normally installed on an Ubuntu VPS or another server you administer. Your cost model is the provider’s compute, storage, bandwidth, and backup pricing, plus the time required to patch the operating system, maintain Nginx and uWSGI, monitor logs, and perform releases. The exact price depends on the provider, region, and machine size; the four-worker example is not a sizing or pricing guarantee.
Recommended Free Tools
Managed Python services trade some OS and proxy control for less server administration. They can provide a provider-specific deployment workflow and scaling model, while a self-managed VPS gives direct control over systemd, filesystem permissions, Nginx directives, and the Unix socket. Compare the recurring provider charge and operational labor, not just the monthly VM line item. Verify current regional availability, pricing, and any referral terms directly with the hosting provider before selecting a plan.

Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.

Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
| Approach | Operating model | Control and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| uWSGI plus Nginx on Ubuntu | Self-managed VM or physical server | Fine-grained OS, proxy, socket, process, and filesystem control; you maintain patching, monitoring, deployments, and scaling. |
| Another WSGI server behind Nginx | Self-managed | Can simplify Python-server configuration or match team experience while retaining Nginx’s static-file and proxy role. |
| ASGI deployment | Self-managed or managed | Appropriate when the application and extensions require asynchronous protocols; a traditional Flask WSGI app does not gain ASGI behavior automatically. |
| Managed Python platform | Provider-managed infrastructure | Less operating-system maintenance and often easier horizontal scaling, but fewer low-level controls and a provider-specific cost and deployment model. |
Choose the uWSGI/Nginx pattern when you need direct Ubuntu control, predictable local socket handoff, and a conventional reverse-proxy architecture. Choose a managed platform when reducing server administration is more valuable than controlling the operating system and proxy configuration.
Production readiness checklist
- The development server is not used for public traffic.
wsgi.pyimports without side effects and exposesapp.- uWSGI runs from the project virtual environment and does not run as root.
- The systemd unit uses the intended user, group, working directory, and startup path.
- The socket path is identical in uWSGI and Nginx.
- Socket mode, group, and parent-directory permissions allow Nginx access.
- Nginx serves static files from a verified absolute path.
nginx -tpasses before reload, and the service is enabled for boot.- Logs are available for both the application service and the proxy.
- Worker count has been checked against the server’s memory and workload.
- Firewall, DNS, HTTPS, backups, updates, and monitoring are handled for the server’s environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I not use Flask’s built-in server in production?
Flask’s development server is intended for local development and is not designed to be particularly secure, stable, or efficient. Use a production WSGI server such as uWSGI behind Nginx instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What does wsgi:app mean?
It tells uWSGI to import the Python module named wsgi—usually wsgi.py—and use the object named app as the WSGI application.
Why is Nginx returning 502 Bad Gateway?
Check that the systemd service is active, that the socket exists, and that the socket and uwsgi_pass paths match exactly. Then inspect Nginx’s error log and verify that Nginx can traverse every parent directory.
How do I fix permission denied on the uWSGI socket?
Align the service group with the Nginx worker group, normally with Group=www-data and chmod-socket = 660. Check ownership with ls -l and every parent directory with namei -l.
How many uWSGI workers should I run?
Four workers mirror Flask’s example, while CPU times two is a possible starting heuristic. Treat neither as a guarantee: measure memory use, latency, errors, and queueing for your workload, then adjust.
Why does the systemd service start and immediately stop?
Read journalctl -u myproject. Common causes are missing virtual-environment dependencies, syntax or import errors, an incorrect working directory, or an unguarded app.run() executing during import.
Should uWSGI listen on a public TCP port?
Not for this Nginx deployment. Use a Unix socket for the local handoff and expose only Nginx publicly. A socket avoids adding a second public application endpoint.
How do I serve Flask static files efficiently?
Point an Nginx location /static/ block at the real absolute static directory with an alias. Leave dynamic paths in the general location that includes uwsgi_params and uses uwsgi_pass.
Can this setup run Flask below /app/ instead of at the domain root?
Yes, but configure Flask’s SCRIPT_NAME, the corresponding uWSGI modifier, and Nginx’s prefix handling consistently. Test redirects, generated URLs, static paths, and form submissions separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat happens if I change the systemd unit or uWSGI configuration?
Run sudo systemctl daemon-reload after unit changes, restart uWSGI, and verify the recreated socket. Reload Nginx only when its configuration changes, and run nginx -t before reloading.
The Bottom Line
For a conventional Ubuntu deployment, expose Flask as wsgi:app, run uWSGI from the project virtual environment under an unprivileged systemd account, connect it to Nginx through a 660-mode Unix socket, and let Nginx serve static files and public HTTP. Matching paths, groups, and directory permissions prevents most 502 errors; measured worker sizing, logs, HTTPS, updates, and rollback procedures make the arrangement maintainable.
