This ranking weighs those traits alongside subclass access and usefulness in Team Objective and duels. It is an editorial guide—not an official or statistically proven meta—and the right pick still depends on your class, mode, and comfort with its timing.
Weapon balance has changed across updates, so the order reflects practical roles rather than a claim that one weapon is objectively strongest in every version or matchup. Torn Banner’s official FAQ lists four classes and twelve subclasses; weapon choices are tied to those class and subclass loadouts.
How this ranking works
Each pick is judged on reach, damage profile, speed and windup, stamina pressure, subclass availability, and flexibility between large objective battles and duels. Those factors matter differently: a long weapon can control space in a crowd, while a fast or specialized weapon may be more rewarding in a close fight. The list favors useful combinations of strengths, not a single maximum-damage statistic.

Balance notes are version-specific. For example, Torn Banner’s March 28, 2022 Patch 2.4.2 weapon changes described blunt weapons as receiving a 25% stamina-damage bonus and chop weapons a 10% bonus in that patch’s damage-modifier system. These are historical patch values, not guaranteed current values for every weapon or build.
The 10 best weapons in Chivalry 2
1. Messer — Best all-around pick
The Messer earns the top spot as the most balanced recommendation in this editorial ranking: it offers a useful mix of reach, damaging attacks, and flexibility without being confined to one narrow job. That makes it a sound choice when you want a primary weapon that can contribute in objective fights and still feel at home in a more focused duel. As with every weapon here, its current damage and timing depend on the game’s live balance state.
2. Long Sword — Best for adaptable duels
The Long Sword is a strong choice when you want a weapon that can answer different approaches rather than relying on one attack pattern. Its place near the top reflects its versatility and broad usefulness, especially in smaller fights where reading an opponent matters. Torn Banner adjusted Long Sword damage and timing in its March 2022 balance notes, a reminder that older weapon comparisons should not be read as current measurements.
3. Warhammer — Best for close-range pressure
The Warhammer stands out for players who want a blunt weapon and are comfortable fighting at close range. Blunt damage is associated with stamina pressure in the game’s damage-modifier system, though the documented 25% bonus comes from the March 2022 patch and should not be assumed to be the current value. In its Tenosian Invasion notes, Torn Banner said testing groups and weapon metrics indicated that the Warhammer was very powerful, leading to adjustments to slash damage and windup. That is evidence of balance attention at that time, not proof of present-day supremacy.
4. Dane Axe — Best for aggressive, decisive attacks
The Dane Axe suits players who want a hard-hitting, aggressive option and can make deliberate openings count. Its ranking reflects its offensive appeal, with the trade-off that committing to an attack can leave less room to react than a more flexible choice. The March 2022 balance patch adjusted its damage and timing, so treat older rankings of the weapon as historical rather than a definitive guide to its current performance.

5. One-Handed Spear — Best for keeping opponents at bay
The One-Handed Spear is a natural pick when controlling distance is more important than trading blows at close quarters. Its reach can be useful in objective melees and against opponents trying to close in, while its specialized feel makes it less of a universal recommendation. Torn Banner included it among the weapons with damage and timing changes in March 2022.
6. Quarterstaff — Best for defensive versatility
The Quarterstaff has one of the clearest official role descriptions in the game. Torn Banner presents it as a versatile, defensive two-handed heavy primary for the Knight’s Crusader subclass, combining long range with fast close-range options and distance-targeting overheads. Its block and special attacks have reduced stamina cost according to the Winter War update announcement. It is a particularly appealing choice if you value staying composed under pressure over chasing the most direct damage trade.
7. Highland Sword — Best for reach and heavy hits
The Highland Sword is a high-commitment choice built around its reach and damage potential. Its history also illustrates why a weapon ranking needs a date: in the October 2022 Reinforced Update notes, Torn Banner called it one of the game’s highest-performing weapons at that time, citing the relationship between damage and length. The studio later increased damage for most of its attacks in the March 2024 Duel of the Fêtes update. Neither note establishes its exact standing in the current meta.
8. Goedendag — Best for mixed damage types
The Goedendag offers a distinctive damage profile: its slashes and overheads deal blunt damage, while its stabs deal pierce damage. Torn Banner says that mix lets the weapon deal maximum damage to multiple class armour types. It is a short polearm introduced for Footman and Engineer subclasses, and its special attack can stop a horse if timed successfully. Those properties make it an interesting flexible pick, particularly when you want varied attack options rather than a conventional polearm. Details appear in the Regicide update announcement.

9. Rapier — Best for quick, precise pressure
The Rapier is a specialist choice for players who prefer quick, precise attacks and are comfortable working within its narrower style. It can be rewarding in a duel, but its focused role makes it less straightforward as an all-purpose recommendation for crowded objective fights. Torn Banner adjusted Rapier damage and timing in the March 2022 balance patch.
10. Katars — Best for an unusual Ambusher playstyle
Katars give the Ambusher a distinct close-range option, but they require more deliberate timing than a beginner-friendly generalist. The October 2022 Reinforced Update notes say they follow spear counter rules, their special can hit twice, and their standard slash, stab, and overhead do not flinch an opponent on a successful hit. That combination rewards players who understand their openings and limitations; it is not the safest first weapon to learn. See the Reinforced Update patch notes.
Which weapon should you choose?
- For a first all-purpose weapon: Start with the Messer or Long Sword from the ranking’s generalist tier, then keep the one whose timing feels more natural.
- For defensive play: Consider the Quarterstaff if you play Knight’s Crusader and want the officially described combination of range and lower stamina cost on blocks and special attacks.
- For reach: Try the Highland Sword or One-Handed Spear, recognizing that their strengths and attack commitments differ.
- For a close-range, stamina-focused approach: The Warhammer is worth learning, but patch history alone cannot establish its present balance position.
- For a specialized challenge: Choose Katars if you play Ambusher and are ready to learn their counter rules and non-flinching standard hits.
Mode matters. Team Objective rewards weapons that can manage space and remain useful amid several opponents; duels put more weight on timing, reads, and how comfortably you handle one opponent. No single pick should be expected to dominate both contexts for every player.

Why weapon rankings change
Torn Banner has changed weapon damage and timing over multiple updates. Its official notes document adjustments to weapons including the Rapier, Short Sword, One-Handed Spear, Sword, Dane Axe, Highland Sword, Long Sword, and Messer in March 2022. In May 2022, the studio described using both testing feedback and weapon metrics when addressing the Warhammer. Later updates continued to adjust weapons, including the Highland Sword in 2024.
These records show why a top-ten list is best treated as a useful starting point, not a permanent verdict. The official sources establish weapon roles and past balance decisions, but they do not publish a transparent, current, mode-by-mode dataset that proves a universal top ten.
