His earlier hope that Squadron 42’s launch would be “almost as big an event” as GTA 6 was about attention—not a forecast that the games will match in sales, players, or cultural impact.
What Chris Roberts meant by “almost as big”
In an interview reported by PC Gamer on August 26, 2025, Roberts said: “We’re hoping it’ll be almost as big an event [as Grand Theft Auto 6],” adding, “Other than GTA 6, it’s probably the biggest-budget AAA game.” The comparison was Roberts’s stated hope for launch attention; the interview did not provide figures comparing sales, concurrent players, streaming activity, or cultural impact.
At the time of that interview, Squadron 42 was targeting a 2026 release. The timing has since changed.
When is Squadron 42 coming out?
In a chairman’s letter dated August 27, 2026, Roberts said the studio had moved its planned release from Q4 2026 to Q2 2027. The letter did not give a specific launch date. It said previews for a small number of original backers and long-time Star Citizen creators were planned for October 9–10, 2026, with a specific release date to follow. As of October 8, 2026, that date had not yet been provided in the cited letter.

Roberts said the studio wanted to avoid launching into what he called the “attention buzz saw of GTA6.” That is the developer’s stated rationale for moving the window; it does not establish that GTA 6 attention was the only factor behind the schedule change.
Will Squadron 42 release before or after GTA 6?
The cited statements do not establish an exact release date for either game, so they do not settle which will launch first. Squadron 42’s current target is Q2 2027, and Roberts’s letter says the studio chose that window in part to avoid GTA 6’s expected media attention. The letter does not specify GTA 6’s release date.

What kind of game is Squadron 42?
Squadron 42 is a standalone, offline-playable single-player campaign set in the Star Citizen universe. Its gameplay combines ship combat, on-foot action, and puzzles. It is unreleased, and the cited sources do not establish a price or a specific release day.
