chrome_child.dll - Bad Image
Either the file is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
chrome_child.dll is a legitimate Chrome or Chromium application file, and a missing chrome_child.dll usually means the browser installation is incomplete, damaged, quarantined, or mismatched. The safest fix is to reinstall the affected Chrome or Chromium-based application from its official installer rather than downloading this DLL separately.
The 60-second answer
- Close Chrome and end every
chrome.exeprocess in Task Manager. - Download Chrome again from Google’s official Chrome download page.
- Run the installer and let it replace the damaged installation.
- Check your antivirus Protection History if the file disappeared after a scan.
- If another Chromium-based program shows the message, repair that program instead of Chrome.
- Do not copy
chrome_child.dllintoSystem32or runregsvr32against it.
A normal Chrome installation keeps its application files inside a versioned folder, commonly similar to:

The exact layout can vary between builds and architectures. This is an application DLL, not a Windows system component.

|---|---|---|
| Failed Chrome update | New files were only partly installed | Reinstall Chrome |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed or blocked the file | Review Protection History, then restore only a verified file |
| Mixed browser files | A DLL came from a different Chrome build or architecture | Remove the damaged installation and install a complete matching build |
| Damaged Chromium application | Another browser or app generated the message | Repair or reinstall that specific application |
| Profile, extension, or graphics problem | Chrome starts and then crashes | Test without extensions or hardware acceleration |
| Windows component corruption | Other Windows programs also fail | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Driver or system change | The failure began after a Windows, GPU, or security change | Update or roll back the relevant driver, or use System Restore |
The phrase “the specified module could not be found” can be misleading. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by chrome_child.dll, even when the named file itself exists.

Fix 1: Reinstall the affected Chrome build
This is the primary repair for a genuinely missing or corrupt file.
1. Close every Chrome process
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Processes.
- Find every entry named Google Chrome or chrome.exe.
- Select each one and choose End task.
- Close Task Manager.
A background Chrome process can keep old files locked and prevent the installer from replacing them.
2. Download Chrome again
Open Google’s official Chrome download page by typing its address manually into your browser. Avoid search results that offer isolated DLL files or repackaged installers.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Run the downloaded installer. If Chrome opens normally afterward, test a new tab and several previously affected pages.
3. Use the offline installer if the normal installer fails
If the small web installer reports that it cannot download or complete the installation, use Google’s official offline installer guidance. An offline package is useful when the web installer is interrupted by network filtering, permissions, endpoint security, or a damaged installer cache.
Before trying again:
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm that the system drive has free space.
- Temporarily close other installers and update tools.
- Right-click the Chrome installer and select Run as administrator.
- Run the installation again.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If security software blocks the installer, check its event or protection history instead.
4. Uninstall only when reinstalling over the existing copy fails
If Chrome still will not start:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find Google Chrome.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall prompts.
- Reboot Windows.
- Download and install Chrome again from Google’s official source.
If Windows offers to remove browsing data, back up or synchronize important bookmarks, passwords, and profile information first. Removing the program is different from removing the profile, but an uninstall option that deletes local browsing data should be treated carefully.
How to tell whether this worked
Chrome should launch without the DLL message, and a new Chrome process should remain open in Task Manager. If the same message names another application, that application is the one that needs repair.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
A legitimate filename can still be blocked if the file was damaged, modified, or detected by an endpoint-security rule. Do not restore a file solely because its name looks familiar.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with Chrome.
- Review the path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if the installation is genuine and the path is inside Chrome’s application directory.
- Use Allow on device only when you have verified the file and understand the detection.
If you are unsure, leave the file quarantined and reinstall Chrome from the official installer. Let Defender scan the fresh installation. If the same file is quarantined again, investigate the security product’s report rather than repeatedly restoring it.
A file located in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated game directory deserves additional investigation. Scan the entire computer and check the file’s digital signature before considering any restoration.
Fix 3: Confirm the application and architecture
Chrome can be 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit. The DLL must match the browser build that loads it. Do not combine a 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit browser, or copy a file from an older Chrome installation.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
To identify the affected program, look at the full path in the error, shortcut properties, Task Manager, or Event Viewer. A Chromium-based desktop application may use a file with the same name without being Google Chrome.
If the error comes from a game launcher, messaging client, embedded browser, or another Chromium-based product, reinstall that product from its developer’s official installer. Reinstalling Chrome will not repair an unrelated application.
Third-party lists of old DLL versions are not a current compatibility guide. A historical 32-bit entry may belong to an older Chrome build, but that does not make it suitable for a modern installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 4: Repair Chrome startup and crash problems
Not every reference to chrome_child.dll means the file is missing. Event Viewer may identify it as the faulting module after Chrome has already loaded it. Chrome can also crash because of an extension, profile corruption, hardware acceleration, antivirus interaction, or a graphics driver.
Try these tests:
- Open Chrome with all extensions disabled, if it starts far enough to open a window.
- Go to Settings, select System, and turn off Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Restart Chrome.
- Create a new Chrome profile and test it without importing extensions.
- Temporarily remove recently installed extensions.
- Update or roll back the graphics driver if the crash began after a driver change.
A crash report mentioning an access violation, including 0xc0000005, indicates a different problem from a loader message saying the file is missing. Reinstalling may still be sensible, but the next investigation should focus on extensions, profiles, drivers, and security software.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other apps are affected
chrome_child.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker normally will not recreate it. DISM and SFC are appropriate when multiple Windows applications show startup errors, Windows components are damaged, or updates are failing.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry Chrome.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling Chrome.

If repeatedly running SFC and DISM leaves you guessing about which Windows component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling Chrome remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to Chrome.
Do not use Windows Features to add a Chrome DLL. That panel manages optional Windows components, not files belonging to installed desktop applications.
Fix 6: Check Visual C++ dependencies only when named
Install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the error names a runtime such as:
VCRUNTIME140.dll
MSVCP140.dll
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable page and install the architecture required by the affected application. A 32-bit application may need the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows, and installing x64 alone does not replace x86 dependencies.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A Visual C++ package is not a replacement for chrome_child.dll. If the message names only chrome_child.dll, reinstall the affected browser or application first.
Fix 7: Update or roll back drivers after a system change
A driver is more relevant when Chrome starts but crashes during video playback, page rendering, or hardware acceleration. It is less likely to be the cause of a simple “file not found” message.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver and search automatically, or use Roll Back Driver if the problem began immediately after an update.
- Restart Windows and test Chrome.
Use the computer or graphics-card manufacturer’s official driver source when Windows does not find a suitable update. If identifying the correct hardware version and checking several driver packages is becoming guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; the free scan identifies them, while installation through the full version performs the update.
If the problem clearly began after a system change and a restore point exists, open Start, search Create a restore point, select System Restore, and choose a restore point from before the change. System Restore normally affects system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs rather than personal documents.

Do not download an isolated chrome_child.dll from a random DLL website. The file may contain malware, belong to the wrong Chrome version, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency or installation file is also damaged.
Do not copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not run:
regsvr32 chrome_child.dll
Chrome’s child-process DLL is not an ActiveX or COM library that normally registers itself with Windows. regsvr32 expects a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; using it here can produce another error without repairing Chrome.
The trusted source is a complete installation from Google or the official developer of the Chromium-based application that generated the message.
FAQ
Is chrome_child.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs to Chrome or a Chromium-based application, not to the Windows operating system.
Is chrome_child.dll a virus?
The filename is legitimate, but location matters. A copy inside a genuine, versioned Chrome application directory may be expected. A copy in a system folder, temporary directory, or unrelated application folder should be scanned and verified.
Can I use a 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows?
Possibly, because 32-bit Chrome can run on 64-bit Windows. However, the DLL must match the affected browser’s architecture and exact build. Do not mix files manually.
What if Chrome appears in Event Viewer as the faulting module?
That may indicate a crash after the DLL loaded, not a missing file. Test extensions, a new profile, hardware acceleration, security software, and graphics drivers.
What if reinstalling Chrome does not help?
Check whether another Chromium-based application is producing the message. Then review antivirus history, confirm the file path, test a new profile, update or roll back drivers, and run DISM followed by SFC if other Windows programs are also failing.
