chrome.dll is a private application file used by Google Chrome and other Chromium-based Windows programs. If chrome.dll is missing or was not found, repair the program named in the error rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Do not copy chrome.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Do not use random DLL download sites. The file may belong to Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi, Electron software, a game launcher, or another Chromium-based application, and each program requires a matching build.

Fix chrome.dll errors in order
1. Restart Windows and identify the owning program
Time needed: 2–5 minutes
First, close the program showing the error and restart Windows:
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
- Select the Power icon.
- Click Restart.
- Open the affected application again.
If the error returns, read the complete path shown in the dialog. It may point to Google Chrome, another browser, a game directory, an Electron application, or an old version folder.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
The path is important because repairing Google Chrome will not repair a separate Chromium-based application. If the shortcut is old, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the Target field. The target can reveal which installation the shortcut is trying to launch.
Also note the wording:
- “chrome.dll is missing from your computer” or “chrome.dll was not found” usually means the file was deleted, quarantined, or the installation is incomplete.
- “The application has failed to start” commonly indicates an incomplete or damaged installation.
- “Bad Image” usually points to corruption, an incompatible file, or a version mismatch.
- “The procedure entry point could not be located” usually means
chrome.exeandchrome.dllare from incompatible versions, or the application is not compatible with the current Windows build. - “Error loading chrome.dll. The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency named elsewhere in the dialog is missing.
If the message names VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll, or an api-ms-win-*.dll file instead, you have a different dependency problem. Repairing chrome.dll will not fix that separately named file.
2. Update or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
This is the most likely fix for a missing, corrupted, or mismatched chrome.dll.
For Google Chrome, download the current installer from Google’s official Chrome download page. For Brave, Vivaldi, Electron software, a game, or another Chromium-based program, use that product’s own official installer.
- Close every window belonging to the affected program.
- Download the installer from the vendor’s official website.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Allow the installer to repair or replace the existing installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the program from its newly installed shortcut.
A complete installer replaces chrome.exe, chrome.dll, and related files together. This matters because copying only one DLL can leave the executable and its libraries on different versions.
If the installer reports that the existing installation is damaged, uninstall the affected program first.
Uninstall on Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Click Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected browser or application.
- Click the three dots beside it.
- Select Uninstall.
- Follow the vendor’s removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer again as administrator.
Uninstall on Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Click Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Click Uninstall.
- Complete the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the program from its official vendor source.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the application does not automatically mean that you must delete its user profile. Browsing data, saved settings, and application data are separate choices in many uninstallers. Read the removal prompts carefully before selecting an option that deletes user data.
After reinstalling, test the exact shortcut that previously failed. If it works, the original problem was probably an incomplete update, damaged installation, or mismatched application files.
3. Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software can quarantine an application file after an update, a false positive, or a malware cleanup. Check this before repeatedly reinstalling.
Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Click Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving the affected application or
chrome.dll. - Expand an entry to inspect its path and action.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The path belongs to the installation you recognize.
- The application came from its official vendor.
- Windows Security or the security vendor identifies the detection as safe to restore.
- A current security scan does not report additional threats.
If the file was quarantined because of a confirmed threat, do not restore it. Remove the unwanted software, run a full security scan, and reinstall the application from its official source.

If the same file is quarantined immediately after a clean official installation, update the security product and contact its vendor before creating an exclusion.
4. Repair the installation from the application itself
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
Some games, launchers, and desktop applications include a repair or file-verification function. Use it before performing system-wide repairs.
Look for a menu named Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, Scan and repair, or Manage installation.
A typical process is:
- Open the application’s launcher.
- Select the affected game or program.
- Open its Settings, Manage, or Properties menu.
- Choose Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart the launcher.
- Start the program again.
This restores the correct chrome.dll for that specific application. It also checks other files that may have been damaged at the same time.
If verification repeatedly reports missing files, the installation folder may be affected by antivirus quarantine, disk corruption, or an interrupted update. Reinstall the complete application instead of obtaining an individual DLL.
5. Install pending Windows updates and check compatibility
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A Bad Image or Entry Point Not Found message can result from an old application running against a newer or unsupported Windows environment. Update both Windows and the affected program.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- On Windows 11, click Windows Update.
On Windows 10, click Update & Security, then Windows Update. - Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again until Windows reports that the system is current.
- Run the application’s official installer once more.
Check Google’s current Chrome system requirements when the affected program is Chrome. Other Chromium-based programs may support different Windows releases.
Do not choose a DLL based on an old version table or file size. A 32-bit and 64-bit build are not interchangeable, and two releases of the same application can require different internal functions.

6. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Use these commands when other Windows symptoms suggest system corruption, such as broken Windows features, update failures, or multiple unrelated system files reporting errors. They generally repair Windows components, not a private chrome.dll belonging to an application.

- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall or repair the affected application again if
chrome.dllis still missing.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Its documented guidance is available in the System File Checker repair instructions.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the original application. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process after restarting and investigate broader Windows corruption. Do not assume that a successful SFC scan recreated an application-private DLL.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows repair commands and logs is slowing you down, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair features are handled by the full version. Reinstalling the affected Chrome or Chromium-based program remains the definitive fix when its private files are missing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. Check drivers only when the error points to a driver problem
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A missing chrome.dll is not normally a driver problem. Investigate drivers only if the program also crashes with graphics errors, the Windows Event Viewer identifies a driver fault, or the application’s own support instructions point to a driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters for graphics drivers, or expand the device category named in the error.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install an available driver.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
For a graphics driver, you can also download the matching driver from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer’s official website. Select the correct Windows version and architecture.
If a driver update introduced the failure:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Click Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart Windows.
Manually identifying the correct driver across many device models can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. A driver tool does not replace reinstalling the application that owns chrome.dll.
8. Check disk corruption and malware
Time needed: 15 minutes to several hours
If files disappear again after reinstalling, suspect a filesystem problem, failing storage, or malware rather than a one-time DLL error.

Do not download an isolated DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or a file from an incompatible application release. Even a genuine file may not match the chrome.exe beside it and may leave other damaged files untouched.
Use the official installer for the application that owns the path shown in the error.

chrome.dll is normally an application-private library stored beside the program’s executable in an application directory. Windows DLL search behavior gives the application directory an important role, so placing a random copy in a system directory is not the correct repair. Microsoft documents this behavior in its DLL search order reference.
Do not register it with regsvr32
Chrome’s application DLL is loaded by its program; it is not normally a COM or ActiveX component that needs registration. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, as explained in Microsoft’s regsvr32 guidance.
Do not install unrelated runtimes automatically
Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET are not general solutions for a missing chrome.dll. Install or repair them only when the error names one of their files or the affected application’s vendor explicitly requires them.
Likely causes of a chrome.dll error
| Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| Interrupted or corrupted application update | Run the official installer, or uninstall and reinstall the affected application |
chrome.exe and chrome.dll from different releases |
Replace the complete installation, not one DLL |
| Antivirus quarantine | Inspect quarantine, verify the path, scan, then reinstall if necessary |
| Wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build | Install the architecture required by the owning application and Windows |
| Unsupported or outdated Windows build | Install Windows updates and the current application release |
| Disk or filesystem corruption | Run DISM/SFC and disk diagnostics, then reinstall the application |
| Malware or third-party DLL injection | Run a security scan, remove unwanted software, and reinstall |
Multiple Chrome or Chromium channels can exist in separate installation directories. Repair the directory named in the error rather than removing every browser on the computer.

FAQ
Is chrome.dll part of Windows?
No. It is normally a private file installed by Chrome, Chromium, or a Chromium-based application. It should not normally be placed in System32.
Does every chrome.dll error come from Google Chrome?
No. The filename is also used by Chromium-derived browsers, Electron applications, games, and launchers. Identify the owning program from the full path in the error dialog.
Can I fix it by copying chrome.dll from another computer?
That is unsafe and unreliable. The file may have the wrong version, architecture, or dependencies. Reinstall the complete affected application from its official vendor.
Should I run regsvr32 chrome.dll?
No, not for the normal Chrome application DLL. Registration is for DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry points, not for Chrome’s private library.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will SFC repair a missing chrome.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It can help when Windows itself is corrupted, but the application that owns chrome.dll must normally be repaired or reinstalled.
What if reinstalling does nothing?
Check the error path for an old version directory or a different Chromium-based program. Then inspect antivirus quarantine, install pending Windows updates, review Event Viewer for related errors, check disk health, and test whether the issue occurs under a clean Windows user profile.
Should I delete my Chrome profile?
Not as a first step. Reinstalling the application and deleting browsing data are separate actions. Preserve the profile unless the vendor’s troubleshooting procedure specifically requires removing it.
