chtbrkr.dll errors usually appear as “The program can’t start because chtbrkr.dll is missing from your computer,” “chtbrkr.dll was not found,” or “Error loading chtbrkr.dll.” chtbrkr.dll is a genuine Microsoft component, not a random game DLL: it is a Traditional Chinese word breaker used by older Windows indexing and SQL Server Full-Text Search components.

The 60-second answer

Do not download chtbrkr.dll from a DLL download site or copy an arbitrary version into System32.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

First, identify what displayed the error:

  • If it appears during Windows Search, indexing, login, or a Windows maintenance task, repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
  • If it appears when SQL Server or an SQL-backed application starts, repair the affected SQL Server instance.
  • If it appears only when one older application starts, repair or reinstall that application.
  • If the file was recently quarantined, inspect Windows Security before restoring anything.
  • If the file exists but still will not load, check architecture and missing dependencies rather than copying another DLL.

Modern SQL Server installations generally use MsWb70404.dll for Traditional Chinese Full-Text Search. Microsoft identifies chtbrkr.dll as the previous word breaker, so restoring it is not automatically the correct fix for a newer SQL Server installation.

What chtbrkr.dll does

A word breaker divides text into searchable words or tokens. This is especially important for Chinese text, where search engines cannot always rely on spaces between words.

chtbrkr.dll was Microsoft’s previous Traditional Chinese word breaker for Full-Text Search. It was associated with legacy Windows indexing components and older SQL Server installations. Microsoft documents the older component and its replacement in its SQL Server word breaker documentation.

The file’s internal name is ChtBrkr, and it belongs to Microsoft’s Chinese bigram character breaker for Index Server. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file.

On older Windows systems, it may be located under:

%windir%System32

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit system component may instead be associated with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
%windir%SysWOW64

Those folders are not interchangeable. Windows uses file-system redirection so that 32-bit and 64-bit programs receive the appropriate system components. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.

A SQL Server installation may also keep its own Full-Text Search components in an instance-specific directory. Therefore, finding or not finding a copy in System32 does not by itself prove that Windows or SQL Server is broken.

Why the message appears

The word “missing” does not always mean that chtbrkr.dll has been deleted. Common causes include:

Cause What is actually happening Correct repair
Damaged Windows component A protected system file or component-store entry is corrupt Run DISM, then SFC
Damaged SQL Server installation Full-Text Search files or registry configuration are incomplete Repair the affected SQL Server instance
Removed legacy application An old program still tries to load a component it owned Reinstall, repair, or remove the caller
Antivirus quarantine Security software moved the file Review Protection History and verify provenance
Wrong architecture A 32-bit program is loading the wrong binary, or a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit DLL Repair the owning component
Missing dependency chtbrkr.dll exists, but another DLL it needs cannot load Repair the application or component and inspect logs
Failed update or upgrade An update, uninstall, or SQL Server upgrade left stale configuration Repair or reconfigure the affected installation
Disk corruption or malware Files are being damaged or removed repeatedly Check drive health and perform a trusted security scan

The first useful question is not “Where can I download the DLL?” It is “Which process is asking for it?”

Step 1: Identify the caller

Read the complete error and note when it appears.

If it appears during Windows startup

Check whether the message appears before the desktop, immediately after sign-in, or when Windows Search starts indexing. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Startup apps, and look for an old indexing utility, database tool, or application you no longer use.

You can also check Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Sort by installation date if the problem began after removing or updating software.

If the message appears only in one Windows account, create a temporary test account:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Select Other users.
  4. Choose Add account.
  5. Create a local test account and sign in to it.
  6. Check whether the error appears there.

If the error is limited to one profile, the cause may be a per-user startup item, indexing configuration, or application setting rather than a damaged system DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If it appears when SQL Server starts

Look for references to SQL Server, Full-Text Search, a database management tool, or a business application backed by SQL Server. Multiple SQL Server versions can coexist, so repair the instance named by SQL Server Setup rather than automatically choosing the newest installation.

For newer installations, you can check whether Full-Text Search is installed:

SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('IsFullTextInstalled');

Microsoft documents this check in its Full-Text Search installation guidance.

If it appears with one application or game

Repair that program before changing Windows files. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, select the program’s three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options if Repair is available. If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall it using the program’s official installer.

An application that still expects the legacy word breaker may be the actual problem. If you removed old indexing or SQL Server software shortly before the error began, removing the obsolete startup entry or reinstalling the application may be more appropriate than restoring a system file.

Step 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Use this procedure when the error appears during Windows Search, indexing, startup, or a Windows-maintenance task, or when the owning application is unclear.

Save open work first, then install any pending Windows updates and restart. After restarting:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source SFC uses when replacing damaged protected files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then run:

sfc /scannow

Do not close the window until verification reaches 100 percent.

Restart Windows and repeat the action that produced the error.

How to read the result

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files. Continue with application, SQL Server, architecture, and dependency checks.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Continue with the log step below and consider System Restore.
  • DISM could not find the source files: Run Windows Update again. If that fails, use a matching Windows installation source with DISM’s /Source and /LimitAccess options, as described in Microsoft’s System File Checker repair instructions.

To extract SFC’s relevant entries to a desktop file, run:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"

Open sfcdetails.txt and look for entries mentioning chtbrkr.dll or the component that requested it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeatedly running SFC without knowing what changed makes troubleshooting guesswork. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version, and it is optional rather than a substitute for repairing a specific SQL Server or application installation.

Step 3: Repair SQL Server instead of replacing the DLL

Use SQL Server Setup Repair when the error appears with SQL Server, Full-Text Search, or an application that depends on a named SQL Server instance.

You need matching SQL Server installation media or access to the original installer source.

  1. Insert or mount the SQL Server installation media.
  2. Run setup.exe.
  3. Select Maintenance.
  4. Select Repair.
  5. Choose the affected SQL Server instance.
  6. Follow the setup wizard to completion.
  7. Restart Windows if Setup requests it.
  8. Test the database application and its Full-Text Search feature.

Microsoft says SQL Server repair replaces missing or corrupted files and registry keys. The documented command-line form is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
setup.exe /q /ACTION=Repair /INSTANCENAME=<instancename>

Replace <instancename> with the actual instance name.

Do not repair a different instance merely because it is newer. If several SQL Server versions are installed, check SQL Server Configuration Manager, Services, and the application’s connection settings to identify the instance being used.

For a current SQL Server installation, repair may restore the newer MsWb70404.dll component rather than chtbrkr.dll. That is expected if the installation no longer uses the legacy word breaker.

Step 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

An antivirus product may have removed the file, particularly if it was modified, damaged, or located in an unexpected application directory.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review detections related to chtbrkr.dll.
  7. Expand the detection and note its location, detection name, and action.

Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only when all of these are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • It came from a trusted Microsoft or official application installation.
  • The detection has been investigated.
  • A current security scan does not identify compromise.
  • Repairing the owning application is not the better option.

Microsoft describes these quarantine and restore controls in its Protection History guidance.

If restoring the file immediately triggers another detection, leave it quarantined and repair or reinstall the owning component instead.

Step 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Architecture errors can look like missing-file errors. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may need a 32-bit component associated with SysWOW64, while a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL.

Do not solve this by copying files between System32, SysWOW64, and an application folder. That can create a second mismatch and make servicing harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Instead:

  1. Identify whether the failing program is 32-bit or 64-bit from its documentation or installation folder.
  2. Repair or reinstall that program using its official installer.
  3. For SQL Server, run Repair from the matching installation media.
  4. For Windows components, use DISM and SFC.
  5. Restart and test again.

A file can also exist with the wrong version for the caller. An old program may request an entry point that is absent from a different build, producing “The procedure entry point could not be located” rather than a simple missing-file message.

Microsoft lists historical chtbrkr.dll records in older product updates, but those records are not a supported download matrix. Do not use a version number or file size from a third-party index as a reason to replace the installed file.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Step 6: Check for a missing dependency

Windows may report that a module is missing even when chtbrkr.dll is present. In that situation, a dependent DLL may be unavailable, damaged, incompatible, or blocked.

Useful places to investigate include:

  • Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application
  • The failing application’s installation or diagnostic logs
  • SQL Server Setup logs
  • Windows Security Protection History
  • The application’s official repair or verification function

Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET solely because chtbrkr.dll is mentioned. There is no verified evidence that this specific file belongs to those runtime packages.

If a program reports “not designed to run on Windows” or an entry-point error, treat that as an architecture or version problem. Repair the program that owns the file rather than trying random DLL copies.

Step 7: Check Windows Features without blindly toggling components

Legacy indexing software may have depended on Windows search or indexing features. To inspect available Windows components:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the Windows Features list for the indexing or search component relevant to the error.
  3. Do not enable or disable unrelated features as a test.
  4. If a known feature is damaged, use Windows repair or the original application installer rather than copying chtbrkr.dll.

Feature names and availability vary between Windows editions. A missing entry does not prove that chtbrkr.dll should be installed manually.

Step 8: Update drivers only when the evidence points there

A display, storage, chipset, or motherboard driver does not normally own a Traditional Chinese word breaker. Driver work is relevant if the failure began after a system update, storage errors are present, or Device Manager reports a related device problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the General tab for an error code.
  7. Review the Driver tab for provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update driver or install the latest driver from the hardware manufacturer.
  9. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not use Device Manager to replace chtbrkr.dll; it is not a device driver.

When several hardware drivers need checking, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; driver installation through its full version is optional, and it will not replace repairing the application or SQL Server instance that owns chtbrkr.dll.

Step 9: Use System Restore when the timing is clear

System Restore is useful when the error began after an update, uninstall, repair attempt, or software installation and a restore point exists from before the change.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal files. Microsoft provides additional details in its System Restore documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error began after removing old SQL Server or indexing software, System Restore may bring back stale configuration without fixing the underlying problem. In that case, repair or remove the obsolete caller after Windows starts normally.

If every repair succeeds but the message remains

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm the exact executable named in the error.
  2. Check whether the error appears only for one user account.
  3. Inspect Startup apps and Task Scheduler for an obsolete caller.
  4. Repair the application that launches the error.
  5. Repair the exact SQL Server instance if Full-Text Search is involved.
  6. Check Windows Security Protection History.
  7. Confirm that the process architecture matches the installed component.
  8. Review Event Viewer and installer logs for a missing dependency.
  9. Run a trusted malware scan and check drive health.
  10. Use System Restore or Windows recovery if protected files continue disappearing.

A Microsoft signature on a file in System32 proves its publisher, but it does not prove that the current application should load it. SQL Server may use private per-instance components, and modern versions may no longer need the legacy word breaker at all.

Frequently asked questions

Is chtbrkr.dll a legitimate Windows file?

Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft component associated with Traditional Chinese word breaking for legacy indexing and older SQL Server Full-Text Search deployments. That does not mean every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain it.

Should I download chtbrkr.dll manually?

No. There is no verified official standalone Microsoft download page for this DLL. Random copies can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, match the wrong version, or fail because the real problem is a dependency or damaged installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows repair, SQL Server Setup Repair, or the official installer for the application that produced the error.

Does Visual C++ Redistributable fix this file?

No evidence connects chtbrkr.dll to Visual C++ Redistributable. Do not install runtime packages merely because this DLL is missing.

Should I run regsvr32 chtbrkr.dll?

Usually not. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A word breaker or system component is not automatically repaired by registering it. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference, but does not instruct users to register chtbrkr.dll.

Is chtbrkr.dll still used by SQL Server?

It is a previous Traditional Chinese word breaker. Modern SQL Server Full-Text Search uses newer per-instance components, including MsWb70404.dll for Traditional Chinese. Repair the SQL Server installation rather than forcing the legacy DLL into a newer instance.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where should the file be located?

Depending on Windows version, architecture, and owning product, it may be associated with %windir%System32, %windir%SysWOW64, or a SQL Server Full-Text Search directory. Location alone is not proof that the file is correct for the program reporting the error.

What is the safest final fix?

Trace the caller, then repair that caller. Use DISM and SFC for a Windows component, SQL Server Setup Repair for SQL Server, and the official installer for an individual application. This repairs the surrounding files, configuration, dependencies, and architecture instead of hiding one missing-file message.
