chxadvancedds.dll Not Found: Diagnose the Windows Failure

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing Windows, note:

  • Which program shows the error, if any
  • Whether it appears at startup, when typing, or after changing a language
  • The complete error text, such as “ChxAdvancedDS.dll is missing” or “The specified module could not be found”
  • Your Windows edition, version, and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether the problem affects every user account or only one
  • Whether the file exists under C:WindowsSystem32InputMethodSHARED

chxadvancedds.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component associated with Microsoft IME, the Windows input method system. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, game middleware component, or ordinary third-party application DLL.

The safest repair is to restore Windows components through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or the affected language feature. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL from a random archive.

What chxadvancedds.dll does

The filename and public Windows file metadata associate ChxAdvancedDS.DLL with Microsoft IME and an advanced data-services component. Microsoft does not publish a detailed public description of this specific DLL, so its exact internal responsibilities should not be guessed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A typical location is:

C:WindowsSystem32InputMethodSHAREDChxAdvancedDS.DLL

The exact path, version, size, and architecture depend on the Windows build. A file from one Windows release is not automatically suitable for another. Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 samples are publicly indexed, while exact current Windows 11 package coverage and ownership were not independently verified.

The file may be reported with the original filename AdvancedDS.dll. A filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine. Its location, Microsoft digital signature, and compatibility with the installed Windows build matter.

Error messages you may see

Commonly indexed examples include:

  • “The program can’t start because ChxAdvancedDS.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “A required component is missing: ChxAdvancedDS.dll. Please install the application again.”
  • “Error loading ChxAdvancedDS.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The file ChxAdvancedDS.dll is missing or corrupted.”

These examples come from third-party error references rather than a Microsoft article dedicated to this file. Also, “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent. Windows may have found chxadvancedds.dll but failed to load a dependency required by it.

Fix 1: Install updates and restart Windows

An interrupted update or language-feature installation can leave Windows components incomplete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Check for updates again after restarting.

On Windows 10, Windows support ended on October 14, 2025. If you continue using Windows 10, the updates available to your device may be more limited than those available for supported Windows 11 installations.

If the error began immediately after an update, do not repeatedly copy DLL files into system folders. Continue with the component repair steps below.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows when the scan completes.
  2. Test the affected program or input method again.

SFC may report that it repaired corrupted files, found no integrity violations, or found files it could not repair. If it cannot repair everything, run DISM once more, restart, and run SFC again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a repair source that closely matches your installed Windows edition and build. Do not use a source from a different architecture or an unrelated Windows release.

Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions explain the DISM-before-SFC sequence and result messages. For source-based repair, see Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance.

Repeating SFC and DISM manually can make it difficult to know which repair changed the system. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies, while the repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate fix for a damaged system component.

Fix 3: Reinstall the affected language or IME feature

Because this DLL is associated with Microsoft IME, repair the language feature connected with the error.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Time & language.
  3. Choose Language & region.
  4. Find the affected language.
  5. Click the three-dot menu beside it and choose Language options.
  6. Review Language pack and the available keyboard or handwriting features.
  7. If the language pack is incomplete, install it.
  8. If the problem remains, remove the affected language from Language & region.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Return to Language & region, select Add a language, and install it again.
  11. Under the language’s options, select the required language pack and keyboard layout.

Test typing in a text editor after reinstalling the feature. If the error appears only when switching keyboard layouts or using a particular input method, this step is more relevant than reinstalling an unrelated application.

Do not expect a checkbox in Turn Windows features on or off to restore this DLL. Windows input languages and IME packages are managed through Settings > Time & language, not through the general Windows Features dialog.

Microsoft documents these controls in its guide to language and keyboard input settings and its information about Windows language packs.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may quarantine a damaged, modified, or falsely detected system file.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Choose Windows Security.
  4. Open Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Look for an entry involving ChxAdvancedDS.DLL.
  7. Expand the entry and review its location, detection, and action.

Restore the file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:

  • It was located in the expected Windows input-method folder
  • The file is digitally signed by Microsoft
  • The detection has been confirmed as a false positive
  • Windows Security or your security administrator permits the restoration

If the file was found in a game folder, a temporary directory, a downloads folder, or an unfamiliar application directory, leave it quarantined and repair Windows instead. Restoring a malicious impostor can make the system less safe. Microsoft explains quarantine and restore decisions in its Protection History guidance.

After quarantine, run DISM and SFC rather than copying the quarantined file back manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Verify the path and digital signature

If a copy of the file exists, check whether it is the Windows component or an impostor.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to:
C:WindowsSystem32InputMethodSHARED
  1. Look for ChxAdvancedDS.DLL.
  2. Right-click it and select Properties.
  3. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  4. Select the Microsoft signature and click Details.
  5. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.

A file in an application directory is not automatically legitimate. Conversely, absence from that exact folder does not prove a problem because Windows builds and architectures can use different servicing layouts.

Do not choose a replacement by comparing only the filename. A 32-bit DLL and a 64-bit DLL are not interchangeable, and a DLL from another Windows build may fail even when its name matches.

Fix 6: Check whether the issue is account-specific

A damaged user profile or input configuration can make a system component appear broken.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Rank #3
  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
  2. Select Add account.
  3. Create a temporary local test account if necessary.
  4. Sign in to that account.
  5. Try the same keyboard layout, language, or program.

If the error occurs only in one account, remove and re-add the affected language in that profile first. Do not replace system files based only on a profile-specific failure.

If every account shows the error, continue treating it as a Windows component or language-feature problem.

Fix 7: Check recent drivers and software changes

A display, keyboard, input, or system utility update may change when the error appears, although no evidence ties this DLL to a particular driver package.

To inspect recent device changes:

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, and any relevant device category.
  3. Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Review the driver date and version.
  6. Use Roll Back Driver only if it is available and the problem began after that driver change.
  7. Otherwise select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.

Do not uninstall random devices to address a missing Windows DLL. If the error began after a specific application update, use that application’s Repair, Verify files, or official reinstall option, while remembering that the Windows IME component itself is not owned by that application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hunting through Device Manager for a stale driver can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing the drivers it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace Windows component repair.

Do not start with regsvr32

Do not begin with:

regsvr32 chxadvancedds.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A public inspection record shows those exports in one sample of this file, but that does not mean Microsoft instructs users to register it manually.

Registration does not restore a missing file, repair a damaged component store, install a language pack, or resolve a missing dependency. Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or language-feature repair first. Microsoft describes the tool’s actual purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.

Avoid manual DLL download sites

Do not download chxadvancedds.dll from a DLL archive and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or a program folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That approach can introduce malware, use the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, bypass file signing, or leave the real dependency problem untouched. It can also cause a program to load an impostor from its own directory.

The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component servicing, the relevant language or IME feature, and matching Windows installation media. There is no known Microsoft standalone chxadvancedds.dll redistributable.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change

If the error began after a driver, update, or system utility installation, System Restore may undo the change.

  1. Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Click System Restore.
  4. Select a restore point created before the error began.
  5. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  6. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, registry settings, updates, and installed programs while preserving personal files. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guide.

Fix 9: Repair Windows when component repair fails

If DISM reports that the component store cannot be repaired, SFC continues to report unrepairable files, or multiple Windows features fail, use a Windows recovery or in-place repair path rather than replacing individual DLLs.

On supported Windows 11 installations, check:

Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now

Where available, this reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may not appear on every edition or configuration. Microsoft describes it in its Windows repair reinstall instructions.

If malware is suspected, run a full Windows Security scan first. If repair still fails, use Windows recovery options or installation media, and back up important files before reinstalling.

FAQ

Is chxadvancedds.dll a genuine Windows file?

Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft IME. Verify the path and Microsoft signature before trusting any copy.

Is it only used by Windows 8.1 or Windows 10?

Public metadata lists Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 samples. Exact current Windows 11 package membership was not independently verified, so do not assume one version applies to every Windows release.

Should I download version 6.3.9600.17031?

No. That is an older Windows 8.1-era listing, not a universal replacement version.

Can I copy the file from another PC?

Do not. The other computer may have a different Windows build, edition, architecture, language configuration, or damaged file. Restore the component through Windows servicing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the message say a module could not be found when the DLL exists?

Windows may be unable to load a dependency, or the file may be incompatible, damaged, unsigned, or incorrectly located. DISM and SFC are safer than copying another DLL.

When should I reinstall the application that shows the error?

Reinstall it when the failure began after that application’s update and its own repair option does not help. However, chxadvancedds.dll is a Windows IME component, so reinstalling the application is not a substitute for repairing Windows or the affected language feature.
