substrate.dll is an application DLL, not a normal Windows component. When Windows reports that substrate.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the program that owns it instead of copying the file into System32.
The most strongly documented owner is Adobe Photoshop Lightroom or Lightroom Classic. A separate Minecraft utility, NBTExplorer, uses a related Substrate.Nbt assembly and can produce a similar-looking dependency error. Identify the application named in the message before choosing a repair.

Do not infer the correct file from its name alone. The authoritative current version, size, hash, publisher metadata, and architecture for Adobe’s Windows copy are not established here, so historical DLL listings are not reliable specifications.
Fix 1: Repair Lightroom through Creative Cloud
For Lightroom Classic, the safest and most likely solution is a complete reinstall through the Adobe Creative Cloud desktop app. This restores the files belonging to one complete release instead of mixing a replacement DLL from another version.
Before removing Lightroom, your catalogs and photos should normally remain separate from the application files. If you have customized presets, plug-ins, profiles, or other application settings, make sure they are backed up before uninstalling.
- Close Lightroom Classic and the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop app from the Start menu.
- Select Apps.
- Find Lightroom Classic in the installed-app list.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- If Creative Cloud asks whether to remove preferences, choose according to your backup and troubleshooting needs. Do not delete catalog or photo folders as part of this process.
- Restart Windows again.
- Open Creative Cloud, select Apps, find Lightroom Classic, and choose Install.
- Let the installation finish completely before launching Lightroom.
- Start Lightroom and test the catalog that previously failed.
If the application starts, the missing or damaged application file was restored. If the same error returns immediately, check antivirus quarantine before repeating the reinstall. Security software may remove the file again during installation or first launch.
For an older standalone Lightroom installation, use the supported uninstaller rather than deleting its program folder manually:
- Press Windows key, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs and then Programs and Features.
- Select Adobe Lightroom.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall from the original legitimate installer or the account and installer source associated with that release.
Do not install an unrelated newer or older DLL into the old application directory. Lightroom files from different releases may not be interchangeable.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a DLL after an update, cleanup operation, or false detection. Restore it only when the file belongs to the application installation you have verified.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for a recent event involving Lightroom, NBTExplorer, or
substrate.dll. - Review the exact path and action.
- If the path is inside the verified application folder and you trust the installation, use the available Restore or Allow on device action.
- Reinstall or repair the owning application afterward.
- Start the application and confirm that the error is gone.
If you use another security product, open its quarantine or detection history instead. Do not permanently disable protection or create a broad exclusion for System32. If the detected file is in a temporary folder, an unexpected download directory, or an arbitrary location, do not restore it. Run a full security scan and reinstall the application from its official source.
Fix 3: Confirm the application path and architecture
A 32-bit application needs 32-bit dependencies even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Conversely, a 64-bit application needs the matching 64-bit build. Do not use the Windows edition as proof of the application’s architecture.
To inspect the error path:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Record the application name, faulting module, full path, and status code.
You can also right-click the program’s shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect the Target path. The DLL should belong beside the application or within its own installation structure, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
If the path shows mixed folders from different releases, a migration directory, or a manually copied program, remove the application through its official uninstaller and install one complete release. Do not overwrite only substrate.dll.
Fix 4: Repair NBTExplorer and its .NET dependency
If NBTExplorer is the program reporting the failure, do not apply Adobe-specific fixes. NBTExplorer is a separate Minecraft save editor with its own Substrate.Nbt dependency.
- Close NBTExplorer.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find NBTExplorer.
- Select its menu and choose Uninstall, if available.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the matching release from the project’s official repository or its legitimate release package.
- Extract or install it into a new folder rather than combining it with an older copy.
- Launch NBTExplorer and test a copy of the affected save.
NBTExplorer requires .NET Framework 2.0 or later on Windows. To check Windows’ optional components:
- Press Windows key, type Turn Windows features on or off, and open it.
- Review the available .NET Framework entries.
- Enable the framework version required by the NBTExplorer release.
- Select OK and allow Windows to apply the change.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test NBTExplorer again.
Do not enable a framework blindly if the application’s documentation specifies a different requirement. If the original program folder contains a missing ReferencesSubstrate.dll, reinstall the matching application package rather than borrowing that file from another computer.
Fix 5: Install a runtime only when the message names it
substrate.dll is not established as a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or Windows Update file. Installing runtimes at random will not normally recreate it.
If the error names VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll, or another Microsoft Visual C++ component:
- Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Choose the package matching the application architecture.
- Use
vc_redist.x86.exefor a 32-bit program. - Use
vc_redist.x64.exefor a 64-bit program. - Use ARM64 only for an ARM64 application and system configuration.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed, or complete the installation if it is missing.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected application.
The x86 and x64 packages can coexist. Installing x64 alone does not satisfy a 32-bit application.

Fix 6: Update Windows and repair protected components
Because substrate.dll is an application file, System File Checker cannot normally recreate Adobe’s or NBTExplorer’s private DLL. Windows repair tools are appropriate when the PC also shows broader corruption, failed updates, damaged system applications, or other Windows component errors.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, retest the program. If both commands complete without resolving the error, return to the owning application’s installer rather than repeatedly running system scans.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM or SFC leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. For a file owned by Lightroom or another application, reinstalling that program remains the definitive fix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Update drivers only for broader graphics or system symptoms
A driver update is not a direct repair for a missing substrate.dll. Consider it only when Lightroom or another affected program also crashes with display-driver errors, the screen flickers, or Windows reports a separate device problem.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows.
- Repeat the check under any device category showing a warning icon.
For a clean graphics-driver repair, obtain the current driver from the computer or graphics-device manufacturer and follow its installer’s clean-install option when available. Do not remove random devices in Device Manager to fix an application DLL.
When checking dozens of devices manually is impractical, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application that owns substrate.dll remains the correct fix for this file.

What not to do
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites sites may provide malware, a wrong release, incorrect architecture, or a file that does not match the application’s dependencies. Even a genuine file may fail because the installation contains other mixed or damaged components.
Do not copy substrate.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A random application folder
- Another computer’s installation directory
Use the official Creative Cloud installer for Lightroom, the legitimate installer or release package for NBTExplorer, and Microsoft’s official pages for Microsoft runtimes.
Do not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 substrate.dll is generally inappropriate. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; it does not reconstruct a missing application installation or repair an incompatible binary.
Do not use registry cleaners
Registry cleaning does not restore a deleted application file and can remove configuration needed by the program. Repair the owning application instead.
If reinstalling does not solve it
Collect the information needed for the next diagnosis:
- Copy the exact error wording.
- Record the full path shown in the message or Event Viewer.
- Note whether the message says missing, not found, cannot be loaded, or not designed to run on Windows.
- Record any status code, including
0xc0000020. - Check antivirus quarantine history.
- Confirm the installed application version and architecture.
- Check whether the failure occurs with every Lightroom catalog.
- Test from a new Windows user profile.
- Temporarily diagnose third-party security or shell software interference without leaving protection disabled.
- Check the drive and restore user data from a known-good backup if disk errors or unexplained file loss are present.
System Restore is a last resort, not a substitute for reinstalling the application. Protect catalogs, photos, Minecraft saves, and other user data before removing software or attempting broader recovery.
FAQ
Is substrate.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an application file associated most strongly with Lightroom or Lightroom Classic. It should not normally be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Can I fix Lightroom by copying substrate.dll from another PC?
No. The other computer may have a different release, architecture, or dependency set. Reinstall Lightroom through Creative Cloud so all files match.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is this always an Adobe error?
No. NBTExplorer has a separate Substrate.Nbt dependency, and another installed program may use a similarly named file. Follow the application and path shown in the error.
Should I run SFC for substrate.dll?
Only when Windows shows broader corruption. SFC repairs protected Windows components and normally will not restore a private Adobe or NBTExplorer DLL.
Why does the message say the DLL is not designed to run on Windows?
That wording commonly indicates corruption, an incompatible binary, or mixed application files. Reinstall the owning application instead of registering the DLL.
What if the error names a Microsoft runtime too?
Repair or install the specifically named runtime from Microsoft, using the architecture required by the application. That is separate from repairing substrate.dll.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will reinstalling Lightroom delete my catalogs or photos?
The application uninstall process is separate from catalog and photo storage, but back up important catalogs, photos, presets, and profiles before beginning. Do not manually delete those folders during the repair.
