Before changing anything, note:
- Which program or Windows process displays the error
- Whether it appears during startup, Windows Update, rollback, or a feature upgrade
- Whether the message says the file is missing, cannot be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether Microsoft Defender recently quarantined a file
- Whether you recently added a language pack, keyboard, input method, driver, or third-party language tool
The most reliable repair is to repair Windows itself. Do not start by downloading chxmig.dll from a DLL website.

The exact folder depends on the Windows build and installation source. A file in a Windows migration directory with a valid Microsoft signature is very different from an identically named file in a game, download folder, or unknown application directory.
This is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or separately downloadable Microsoft IME runtime.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
An interrupted update can leave Windows migration files inconsistent.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if Windows Update does not request it.
- Retry the upgrade or application that produced the error.
If the error disappears after restarting, the problem was probably an incomplete update or pending component repair. If it returns, continue with DISM and SFC rather than copying a replacement file.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use an elevated Command Prompt. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while System File Checker uses that repaired source to restore protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish successfully.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repeat the action that caused the
chxmig.dllmessage.
A successful SFC result means Windows found no integrity violations or repaired the damaged files. If SFC says it could not fix some files, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more.
If DISM cannot find repair files, use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid source matching the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and release. Do not use a random folder containing a similarly named DLL.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows components and interpreting SFC/DISM output is the problem, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling Windows remains the correct fix when the migration component itself is damaged.
Fix 3: Repair a failed Windows upgrade
If chxmig.dll appears during Windows Setup, rollback, or a feature upgrade, the filename is usually pointing to a migration failure rather than an application dependency.

First, inspect the upgrade logs:
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetuperr.log
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetupact.log
Open the files in Notepad and search for:
MIG
CHXMIG.DLL
LoadLibrary
gle=126
A log entry resembling MIG Plugin ... LoadLibraryEx error means Setup could not load the migration plug-in or one of its dependencies. Error 126 does not prove that chxmig.dll itself is missing. The missing item may be a dependency.
Then repair Windows as follows:
- Install all pending updates.
- Restart.
- Run DISM and SFC from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Retry the upgrade with current official Windows installation media.
- Ensure the media matches the installed edition, language, architecture, and Windows release.
For an in-place reinstall:
- Sign in to Windows normally.
- Mount or open the official Windows installation media.
- Run
setup.exe. - Choose Change what to keep.
- Select Keep personal files and apps.
- Continue only after confirming that option is available.
If the installer does not offer Keep personal files and apps, stop. The media may not match the installed edition or language, or Setup may be running in the wrong way.
On supported Windows 11 systems, try the less disruptive repair option:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a damaged, altered, or incorrectly detected Windows file.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
chxmig.dll. - Expand the detection and inspect its file path and details.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only when:
- The path is an expected Windows location
- The file has a valid Microsoft digital signature
- You have confirmed the detection is a false positive
- Windows Security or Microsoft guidance supports the restoration
If the file is outside a normal Windows location or lacks a valid Microsoft signature, leave it quarantined. Update security intelligence and run a Full scan. If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
After removing a malicious or unauthorized copy, run DISM and SFC to restore Windows components safely.
Fix 5: Verify the file path and digital signature
If a copy of the file is present, do not judge it by its name alone.

- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft.
Expected Windows locations are more trustworthy than an application folder, temporary directory, Downloads folder, or game directory. A valid signature does not make every copy interchangeable: Windows builds, processor architectures, and language configurations matter.
Do not replace a 64-bit Windows file with an arbitrary 32-bit copy, or use a file from another Windows release because its reported version or size looks close. Public file inventories show different x86 and x64 copies and multiple build-specific versions.
Fix 6: Reinstall a language or input method
A language-pack or input-method change can expose a damaged migration component, although it is not the primary cause in most cases.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Select Add a language.
- Search for the language you need.
- Install the language and its required features.
- Restart Windows.
If the language is already installed, select its More options menu and remove it, restart, then add it again. Avoid removing a language if it is the only display language you can use until you have confirmed that another language is installed.
Fix 7: Check input and related drivers
chxmig.dll is not a device driver, so Device Manager is not the first repair target. Use it only when the problem began after changing a keyboard, touchscreen, audio input, accessibility device, or related driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand relevant categories such as Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, Sound, video and game controllers, or System devices.
- Right-click a recently changed device.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Use Roll Back Driver if the option is available and the issue began immediately after the update.
- Otherwise select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove an unknown device unless you have a recovery plan and know which hardware it controls.
If checking many device versions manually is slowing down diagnosis, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs updating; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation requires the full version. This is optional and does not replace repairing Windows Setup or reinstalling the affected application.
Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 chxmig.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide COM registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. chxmig.dll is a Windows migration plug-in, not a documented self-registering COM component. Registering it will not restore a missing component, repair the Windows component store, or fix an upgrade dependency.

If only one application reports the error
A normal desktop application or game is not established as a usual direct dependency of chxmig.dll. If only one program reports it:
- Check whether the message appears during Windows Setup or only when that application starts.
- Open the application’s official installer or updater.
- Repair or reinstall the application.
- Run its installer as administrator if the developer requires it.
- Check the application’s own logs.
- Contact the developer if the program still references a Windows migration DLL.
A malformed dependency reference can name the wrong file. Copying chxmig.dll into the application directory may hide one loader message while leaving the real dependency problem unresolved.

Should you download chxmig.dll
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible Windows build, or a modified file. They also commonly leave the damaged component store or failed upgrade untouched.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows 11’s repair reinstall, or matching official installation media instead. Manual extraction is appropriate only as an advanced recovery step from matching Microsoft installation media, not as a general download.

Last-resort recovery options
Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after an update, driver installation, or system change and a suitable restore point exists:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and complete the restore.
System Restore normally preserves personal files but can remove recently installed applications, drivers, and updates.
If repair, restore, and an in-place reinstall fail, back up personal data and consider Reset this PC. A clean installation is the final option and removes applications and personal data unless they are backed up separately.
FAQ
Is chxmig.dll part of Microsoft IME?
It is related to Windows input methods, but the stronger identification is a Windows Text Services Framework migration component used by Setup. It is not a standalone IME download.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs chxmig.dll safe?
A genuine Microsoft-signed copy in an expected Windows migration location is normally legitimate. A same-named file in an unknown folder without a valid Microsoft signature should be treated as suspicious.
What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?
It is a generic Windows loader message. It does not by itself prove that chxmig.dll is corrupt. The file may be incompatible, damaged, incorrectly replaced, or unable to load a dependency.
Does error 126 prove that the DLL is missing?
No. A LoadLibrary error with gle=126 can mean that the named DLL or one of its dependencies could not be found.
Should I use the 64-bit file on 64-bit Windows?
Use only the copy supplied by the matching Windows installation or repair source. Do not choose a file solely because it is 64-bit or because its listed version looks newer.
What is the safest first repair?
Install pending Windows updates, restart, then run DISM followed by SFC. If the error occurs during an upgrade, retry with matching official installation media after those repairs.
