gc.dll missing errors usually point to a damaged or incomplete application installation, most commonly an older Acronis product. Do not download a random copy or place it in System32; identify the program that needs it, then repair or reinstall that program from its official installer.
What this file actually does
gc.dll is a third-party application DLL, not a normal Windows component. The strongest identification evidence connects it with Acronis software, including older versions of True Image, Disk Director and Migrate Easy. Acronis documentation for True Image 2010 lists gc.dll among the product files.

That does not mean every file with this name belongs to Acronis. Unrelated developer tools have also used the basename gc.dll, including garbage-collector components. The application that displays the error, the executable that launches it and the file path are more useful than the filename alone.
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because gc.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting gc.dll.”
- “Error loading gc.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because gc.dll was not found.”
- “gc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The failure can begin after an Acronis update, an incomplete uninstall, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, migration to another computer or damage to the application folder.

gc.dll errors: likely cause and correct response
| What you observe | Most likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| The error names True Image, Disk Director or Acronis | Missing or damaged Acronis files | Repair or reinstall that exact Acronis product |
| The error appears after an update or uninstall | Stale application references or incomplete installation | Run Modify or Repair, then reinstall if necessary |
Security software lists gc.dll in Protection history |
Quarantine or removal | Verify the file and restore only a trusted copy, or reinstall |
gc.dll exists but the application still fails |
Wrong build, architecture or missing dependency | Repair the owning app and check the executable and file paths |
| The error names another developer tool | An unrelated implementation of gc.dll |
Repair that named application, not Acronis |
The file is in System32 or an unexpected folder |
Manual copying, malware or an unrelated program | Check its signature and scan before allowing it |
| Several Windows components also fail | Possible Windows component corruption | Run DISM and SFC after addressing the application installation |
Fix gc.dll missing errors
1. Identify the application that owns the error
Start with the complete error dialog. Note the program name, executable name and any path shown. A path containing Acronis, Common FilesAcronis, True Image or Disk Director strongly supports an Acronis installation.
If the dialog does not show a path, use these checks:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Look for the executable that starts immediately before the error appears.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Inspect the surrounding folder and its Properties.
You can also search for the file:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
gc.dll. - Right-click each result and choose Open file location.
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect Details and Digital Signatures.
An Acronis signature and an Acronis installation directory make the identification more credible, but neither replaces a malware scan. A file with the right name in an unexpected directory is not automatically safe.
2. Repair the installed Acronis application
Repair is the safest first fix when the error belongs to Acronis.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Acronis True Image or the relevant Acronis product.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Select Repair if the installer offers it.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
Older Acronis releases may use the Control Panel route:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the Acronis product.
- Choose Change, Modify or Repair.
- Complete the installer and restart the computer.
A successful repair restores the application’s matching files and allows the original executable to start without the gc.dll message. If Repair is unavailable or fails, use the official installer for the same Acronis product and choose an installation or reinstall option.
Do not install a newer Acronis product merely because it is available if the failing application is an older product that needs its own files. The calling executable and product release determine which build is appropriate.
3. Reinstall from official application media
Use the original Acronis installer, an installer supplied with your license, or the current installer obtained directly from Acronis. Do not use a standalone DLL package.
Before reinstalling:
- Back up any Acronis configuration or recovery information you still need.
- Close Acronis and other backup software.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected Acronis product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer as administrator.
- Restart again after installation.
- Test the application that originally reported
gc.dll.
If the old product installer is no longer available, avoid substituting a DLL from a different release. Contact Acronis support or locate the original installation media and license records. A matching installer is safer than guessing from the filename.
If normal uninstall fails, Acronis provides a Cleanup Utility for some products. Treat it as a last resort. It can affect other Acronis software, so back up first, read its warnings and remove only the product you have identified as the owner.
4. Check Microsoft Defender Protection history
Antivirus software may quarantine or remove an application DLL after an update or scan.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- It came from the expected Acronis installation directory.
- The application and installer are trusted.
- The file’s signature and path are consistent with that installation.
- A security scan does not identify a broader infection.
If there is any doubt, do not restore it. Reinstall the application from official media and run a full Windows Security scan instead. Do not create an exclusion merely to make the error disappear.
5. Confirm the architecture and product version
A 32-bit application needs the matching 32-bit application DLL. A 64-bit DLL copied into a 32-bit program folder will not repair the installation, and the reverse is also true.
To inspect the calling program:
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Open file location.
- Right-click the main executable and choose Properties.
- Use the Details tab to identify the product and version.
- Check whether the application has separate
x86orx64folders. - Compare the location of
gc.dllwith the executable that loads it.
Public file databases list multiple Acronis builds and do not agree on every architecture detail. Treat those records as clues, not as proof that a downloaded file is correct. Reinstalling the product that launches the error is the reliable way to obtain the matching variant.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If Windows reports that the DLL is present but cannot be loaded, the problem may be a missing dependency rather than the DLL itself. Repair the owning application first. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX or .NET packages at random without a separate error identifying that runtime.
6. Use the application’s own Verify or Repair option
Some launchers and software suites include a file verification feature.
Open the affected program’s launcher and look for Settings, Manage, Properties, Verify files, Repair or Scan and repair. Run the check, allow it to replace damaged files, restart Windows and test again.
This applies only when that program actually owns gc.dll. A game launcher cannot repair an Acronis DLL, and the presence of a game on the same computer does not establish a connection.

7. Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
gc.dll is not normally a protected Windows file, so System File Checker will not usually restore an Acronis-owned copy. Use Windows repair commands when other Windows components are failing, application installers cannot run, or system corruption is suspected.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Acronis repair or reinstall.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling a third-party application.
When repeated manual DISM and SFC runs leave you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported problems and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the Acronis program remains the definitive fix when it owns gc.dll.
8. Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics or storage driver is not the normal cause of an Acronis gc.dll missing message. Consider driver work only if the application also crashes with device-related errors, Windows reports a device failure or the problem began after a driver change.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date and version.
- Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
Do not remove a working storage or chipset driver simply because gc.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and identify outdated entries; the full version performs the installation, while the Acronis application still needs its own repair or reinstall.
9. Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL fix
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal repair command for ordinary application runtime libraries.
Running commands such as these is generally irrelevant for gc.dll:

A registration error does not prove that the file is missing or damaged. It can also lead you toward the wrong architecture or wrong directory. Repair the owning application instead.

Downloading gc.dll from an unverified DLL site can provide:
- The wrong Acronis build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file for unrelated software
- An unsigned or modified file
- Malware
- A file that hides the original installation problem
It can also break future updates because the application still lacks the rest of its matching files. System32 is not a general-purpose storage folder for application DLLs, and placing a file there often does nothing because applications load libraries from their own installation directory.
Manual copying is reasonable only in a narrow recovery case where the exact file comes from the same trusted installer, backup or verified quarantine record, the path and architecture match, and the vendor’s instructions support the procedure. Reinstalling remains preferable.

Record the following before contacting support:
- The complete error text
- The executable that displays it
- The full path shown in the error
- The Windows version
- The Acronis product and version
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The file’s location and digital-signature status
- Any Defender Protection history entry
- Whether the failure began after an update, uninstall or migration
Then try a clean reinstall, inspect the application’s own logs and contact the software vendor. If the problem began immediately after a recent installation or update, System Restore may reverse that change without removing personal files, although it can remove programs installed afterward.

FAQ
Is gc.dll a Windows system file?
Usually no. The strongest evidence links it to Acronis application software, although other unrelated programs can use the same filename.
Is gc.dll always an Acronis file?
No. Acronis is the leading identification for this troubleshooting case, but the erroring application and file path must confirm ownership.
Should I download gc.dll separately?
No. Use the official installer for the application that needs it. A random download may be malicious, mismatched or ineffective.
Should I copy gc.dll to System32?
No. Application DLLs normally belong in the owning program’s directory, and copying the wrong file can create additional problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan SFC restore gc.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not a third-party Acronis DLL.
Do I need to install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not based on the filename alone. Install a runtime only when a separate dependency error identifies it or the application vendor instructs you to do so.
Why does regsvr32 fail on gc.dll?
The DLL may not expose the registration function that regsvr32 requires. That does not mean registration is the correct repair.
What if the old Acronis installer is unavailable?
Do not substitute a DLL from another version. Check your original media and licensing records, then contact Acronis support for an appropriate installation path.
