Short answer: Citron’s version 0.4 was a real compatibility-focused upgrade for Nintendo Switch emulation on Android, but it was not a universal breakthrough. Released in January 2025, it improved rendering and compatibility for selected games—including The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. Results still depended heavily on the phone, GPU driver, cooling, emulator build, and game version.
The original story is now historical rather than a new August 2026 development. Citron-related projects have continued to change, including later Citron, Citron NEO, and Eden releases. The useful takeaway is that Switch emulation became more viable for some devices and games—not that every title suddenly runs perfectly.

What Citron v0.4 actually changed
Citron v0.4 focused primarily on compatibility. Its changes included improved graphics rendering, compatibility work for popular commercial games, and minor user-interface improvements. Citron also claimed that many games could run at 30 or 60 frames per second.

That claim needs context. The contemporary report from Android Authority attributed Citron’s figures to the project itself: roughly 60% of games were described as “perfect” and 85% as “playable.” The report did not provide a controlled device list, frame-time data, or independently repeatable benchmarks. Citron also did not disclose the testing devices, while Android performance can vary sharply between chipsets and graphics drivers.

So the accurate interpretation is that v0.4 improved the emulator’s chances with a broader selection of games. It did not turn every Switch title into a stable 60-fps experience.
The three headline games
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Tears of the Kingdom is an ambitious test because it places heavy demands on CPU performance, memory handling, shader compilation, and graphics drivers. Improvements to one of those areas can make the game boot or reduce certain glitches, but that does not guarantee consistent performance across Android phones.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a particularly revealing test of frame pacing and input latency. A high reported frame rate is not enough if frame delivery is uneven or controller input feels delayed. Multiplayer functionality and network-related features should also be treated separately from basic local gameplay.

“Boots,” “playable,” and “perfect” are not the same
Compatibility labels are easy to misread. A practical vocabulary is:
- Boots: The game reaches its title screen or begins loading.
- Playable: Meaningful gameplay is possible, although there may be stutter, crashes, graphical errors, or broken features.
- Full speed: The game broadly maintains its intended frame rate under the tested conditions.
- Stable: The game remains usable during extended play rather than only during a short demonstration.
- Perfect: A strong claim that is meaningful only when the device, renderer, game version, settings, and testing duration are clearly described.
A game that displays 60 frames per second but suffers from shader stutter, audio crackling, missing effects, or frequent crashes is not necessarily a good experience. Frame pacing, visual correctness, loading reliability, and long-session stability matter as much as the headline FPS figure.
Android is the important qualification
The original headline was about Android, not Switch emulation in general. Android phones and handhelds do not form one performance category. Snapdragon, Exynos, and MediaTek devices can differ substantially because of GPU architecture, Vulkan-driver quality, memory configuration, thermal design, and manufacturer software.
Citron’s installation documentation lists a 64-bit ARM processor as a requirement, with at least 4 GB of RAM and 6 GB recommended. Those figures describe a baseline for running the software, not a guarantee that demanding games will perform well. A modern flagship Android phone is a much more realistic target for demanding Switch software than an entry-level handset.

Entry-level Android devices
Expect more shader stutter, poor frame pacing, crashes, incomplete compatibility, and the need to use native resolution with few enhancements. A device meeting the minimum RAM requirement may still lack the GPU performance or driver support needed for demanding games.
Modern flagship phones
These are more likely to provide playable performance across a wider selection of games, better Vulkan support, and enough headroom for modest resolution scaling. Even here, sustained performance can decline as the phone heats up.
Active-cooling Android handhelds
Dedicated handhelds can offer physical controls, better ergonomics, and more consistent performance during long sessions. Their results still depend on the chipset and graphics drivers; a device marketed for emulation is not automatically powerful enough for demanding Switch games.

The Citron Forgejo release page lists a March 12, 2026 stable release that included ASTC and scaling features, per-game customization, improved handling of updates and downloadable content, and fixes involving Vulkan, hotkeys, updating, and compilation. See the Citron release page for the project’s own details.
Citron NEO’s GitHub releases list an April 27, 2026 build with additional firmware-22 compatibility, rendering fixes, audio-crash fixes, mipmap fixes, and updated FFmpeg components. Its official site also warns users to rely on the project’s official GitHub organization and avoid copycat downloads.
Eden describes itself as an actively maintained Yuzu fork with Windows, Linux, and Android builds. That does not make it universally superior. The right choice depends on the operating system, chipset, driver, game version, save compatibility, and the specific issue a release is trying to solve.

How to choose between stable and nightly builds
| Build type | Advantages | Risks |
|---|---|---|
| Stable release | Fewer regressions and easier troubleshooting; preferable for a long playthrough. | May lack newer game-specific fixes. |
| Nightly build | Faster access to compatibility fixes and experimental improvements. | Greater regression risk; a nightly can perform worse than an earlier stable build. |
Do not compare emulator names without recording the build date or version. A useful comparison includes the project branch, device chipset, graphics driver, game version, renderer, resolution, and whether updates or DLC are installed.

Legal setup: the responsible path
Use an emulator obtained from its official project page or official repository. Citron’s documentation and terms describe legal homebrew use and do not provide instructions for obtaining commercial game files, firmware, or encryption keys. Use only game data, firmware, and keys obtained from your own legally owned hardware and software, consistent with the laws that apply to you.
- Install the correct official build for your device. Use a device-specific build only when the project identifies it as official.
- Prepare your legally created game files, firmware, and keys.
- Open the emulator’s file-management or game-directory interface and select the directory containing your game files.
- Start at native resolution and default settings.
- Test Vulkan first where it is supported.
- Change one setting at a time and keep separate per-game profiles for demanding titles.
- Back up save files before switching branches, importing updates, or testing experimental builds.
Citron’s installation requirements and directory guidance are available in its official installation documentation. The legality of emulator software, game files, firmware, keys, and distribution are separate questions; avoid treating them as one blanket legal conclusion.
Troubleshooting poor performance
- Verify the source data. Confirm that your legally created game dump and update are valid.
- Restart after graphics changes. Some renderer and shader changes do not take effect reliably until the emulator is restarted.
- Compare builds. Try the latest stable release and, separately, an official nightly only where the project recommends it. Keep the build that behaves better for the game.
- Test the renderer. Try Vulkan and the available alternative renderer, if supported by your device and build.
- Return to 1x resolution. Disable resolution scaling, texture modifications, and enhancement features before diagnosing compatibility.
- Allow shaders to compile. Early sessions may stutter while shader caches are built. Persistent stutter, crashes, or broken effects indicate a deeper issue.
- Check device-specific reports. A problem may be tied to a particular GPU driver rather than the game or emulator generally.
- Try another official fork cautiously. Do this only when that fork documents a relevant compatibility reason, and back up saves first.
- Roll back if necessary. Restore the previous build if a new version causes crashes, save problems, or a regression.
There is no universal “magic” setting. A driver change may improve one game while breaking another, and a firmware or emulator update can alter compatibility.
Which device makes sense?
| Option | Best for | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Existing flagship Android phone | Testing emulation without buying another device. | Thermal throttling, battery drain, device-specific drivers, and the need for a controller. |
| Dedicated Android handheld | Physical controls, portability, and longer sessions on devices with good cooling. | Additional cost; some handhelds have weak software support or insufficient GPU performance. |
| PC | More CPU/GPU headroom, better cooling, and easier external-display use. | Less portable and not representative of Android performance. |
A controller is highly advisable for phones because touch controls are a poor fit for many action games. A cooler can help a passively cooled phone sustain performance, but it cannot compensate for an inadequate GPU or problematic driver. When evaluating accessories, check Android compatibility, input latency, stick quality, mounting, charging access, and fit with the phone’s case.
What the headline should have said
Citron v0.4 was a meaningful Android compatibility update, especially for selected games and better-equipped devices. It improved rendering and reduced some of the barriers that had prevented games from booting or being comfortably playable. But the project’s own compatibility percentages were not independently verified benchmarks, and “playable” did not mean flawless or permanently stable.
As of August 2026, the more important question is not simply which emulator is “the best.” Ask which official build works best for your operating system, chipset, driver, game version, and desired settings. Treat every compatibility claim as conditional, keep backups, and use official project sources rather than renamed APKs or unofficial mirrors.
Also keep the scope clear: this article concerns original Nintendo Switch software. It should not be read as a claim about Nintendo Switch 2 emulation.
