VALORANT “freezing” on Windows 11 can mean several different problems: the Riot Client may hang, the game may stop responding while Windows still works, packet loss may make a match appear frozen, or the entire PC may lock up. Start by identifying which symptom you have, then follow the matching fix instead of changing BIOS settings or reinstalling Windows immediately.

The safest general order is: restart Windows, record any error code, clear the Riot cache, update Windows and the graphics driver, disable overlays, clean-boot Windows, investigate Vanguard-specific errors, and only then reinstall Vanguard or VALORANT.

First, determine what is actually stuck
Press Alt+Tab, Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or the Windows key when the problem occurs. If one of them works, Windows is probably still running and the issue is confined to VALORANT, Riot Client, the graphics driver, or the display pipeline. If nothing responds and you must hold the power button, treat the problem as a system-stability issue rather than a simple game-cache problem.

For a match that appears frozen, enable VALORANT’s performance statistics under Settings > Video > Stats. Packet-loss graphs can distinguish a network stall from a local application freeze. During a network problem, the game usually continues rendering while players teleport, inputs arrive late, or actions appear delayed. A hard lock that also affects the Windows desktop is not normally caused by packet loss. Riot’s network guidance covers packet-loss graphs, wired testing, router troubleshooting, and network buffering at its official network-instability guide.

Quick fixes to try first
1. Restart Windows completely
- Close VALORANT and Riot Client if Windows still responds.
- Select Start > Power > Restart.
- Wait for startup applications to finish loading.
- Open Riot Client and launch VALORANT before starting overlays, recording tools, RGB utilities, or hardware-monitoring software.
A restart is particularly important after installing Vanguard, Windows updates, or a graphics driver. It can clear a temporary stuck process, but it will not repair recurring driver, firmware, overheating, or service conflicts.
2. Record the exact error
Before changing settings, note whether Riot shows a VAN code, VAN9001, VAN9003, “Vanguard not initialized,” or a message mentioning Secure Boot, TPM, HVCI, IOMMU, or a blocked driver. A Vanguard restriction needs a different troubleshooting path from a generic loading-screen hang. Riot’s current launch guidance separates VAN errors from ordinary launch failures; see the official launch-troubleshooting article.
Fix VALORANT stuck on the loading or splash screen
Clear the Riot and VALORANT local cache
Corrupted local data can prevent the client or game from completing startup.
- Close VALORANT and Riot Client. Use Task Manager to end them if necessary.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Find folders clearly associated with VALORANT or Riot Games.
- Delete only the relevant local cache folders. Do not delete the entire
AppDatadirectory or unrelated application data. - Restart Windows.
- Open Riot Client and allow it to recreate the cache.
Folder names can vary by client version and installation. If a folder is not clearly associated with Riot or VALORANT, leave it alone. Riot lists clearing local AppData data among its launch troubleshooting steps.
Update Windows 11
Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates, restart, and test again. Outdated Windows components can contribute to Vanguard dependency and installation problems.
Do not assume every update improves compatibility. If you use a Windows Insider or preview build, a modified installation, or a heavily debloated build, test on a supported stable Windows release before drawing conclusions.

Update or roll back the graphics driver
Download the driver from the manufacturer of your GPU: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.

- If the driver is old or corrupted, install the current version.
- If normal updating does not help, use the installer’s clean-install option or a reputable display-driver cleanup procedure.
- Do not install multiple competing driver packages or unofficial driver-updater utilities.
The newest driver is not always the best driver for every system. Correlate the problem with the date of the driver change.
Test antivirus and firewall interference
Temporarily test third-party antivirus or endpoint-security software using its normal controls, then re-enable it immediately after the test. Add exceptions only for legitimate Riot and VALORANT executables through Windows Security or the security product’s documented interface.
A firewall problem more commonly causes login, update, matchmaking, or connection failures than a complete hardware lock. Never leave Windows Firewall or antivirus protection permanently disabled, and do not use random “firewall fixer” downloads.
Disable overlays and background utilities
Before clean-booting, test VALORANT with these features closed or disabled:
- Discord overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- NVIDIA or AMD in-game overlays
- OBS and other capture tools
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner overlays
- RGB, fan-control, motherboard, and hardware-monitoring utilities
- VPNs and traffic-filtering applications
- Third-party antivirus or endpoint-security software
Do not change everything at once if you can avoid it. Disable one category, restart if needed, and test. If the problem disappears, restore tools individually until you identify the conflict. A freeze that occurs only while streaming, recording, using an overlay, or waking from sleep is especially suggestive of a display-driver or background-utility conflict.

Perform a Windows 11 clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs so you can identify a conflicting service. Microsoft’s full procedure is available in its clean-boot documentation.
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Search for
msconfigand open System Configuration. - Open the Services tab.
- Select Hide all Microsoft services.
- Select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled third-party startup applications.
- Restart Windows and test VALORANT.
Do not disable services before selecting “Hide all Microsoft services.” That safeguard prevents you from accidentally disabling essential Windows services.
If VALORANT works in the clean-boot state, re-enable services and startup items in groups, restarting and testing after each group. This identifies the conflict more reliably than permanently leaving unrelated services disabled. When finished, restore normal startup in System Configuration and re-enable your security software.

Fix Vanguard-related freezes and VAN errors
Secure Boot and TPM are not universal fixes for every VALORANT freeze. They matter when Riot reports a Vanguard restriction or the system has lost required firmware settings after a BIOS reset, motherboard replacement, firmware update, or Windows reinstall.
Useful checks include:
- Press Windows + R, enter
tpm.msc, and check whether TPM is ready. - Press Windows + R, enter
msinfo32, and inspect Secure Boot State. - Read the exact Vanguard message for references to HVCI, VBS, IOMMU, Secure Boot, TPM, or a blocked driver.
Riot explains Vanguard restrictions involving Windows security features including TPM, Secure Boot, Virtualization-Based Security/HVCI, and IOMMU in its Vanguard security overview and motherboard-firmware guidance.
Change BIOS or UEFI settings only when the error indicates that they are relevant. Before changing them, record the original configuration and keep your BitLocker recovery key available. Incorrect firmware changes can affect booting or trigger BitLocker recovery. Follow the instructions for your exact motherboard or laptop model.

Memory Integrity is a security feature, not a performance toggle. Microsoft explains that it can block vulnerable drivers from loading in its blocked-driver guidance. Do not permanently disable it merely to make VALORANT launch; update or remove the incompatible driver where possible. If you temporarily disable a security feature for a controlled diagnostic test, restore it afterward.
Reinstall Riot Vanguard and VALORANT
Reinstalling the game repeatedly is unlikely to help if the cause is a GPU driver, overlay, BIOS setting, or Windows service. Use this step after the lower-risk checks fail.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall Riot Vanguard.
- If the installation remains damaged or the issue persists, uninstall VALORANT.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the official VALORANT website.
- Install the game and Vanguard.
- Restart again when prompted.
- Test the game before restoring overlays and optional utilities.
Vanguard may not fully initialize or reinstall until after a restart. Reinstalling VALORANT alone does not necessarily repair a separate Vanguard installation.
When VALORANT freezes during a match
If Windows remains usable, first close overlays and capture software, update or roll back the graphics driver, and test the game at stock CPU, GPU, and RAM settings. Check whether the freeze happens:
- Only in fullscreen mode
- Only while streaming or recording
- After a predictable number of minutes
- Only after waking from sleep
- Only with Wi-Fi
- After a particular VALORANT or driver update
For a network symptom, enable incoming and outgoing packet-loss statistics, restart the router, test a wired connection, and try VALORANT’s network-buffering setting. If packet loss continues on a wired connection, contact your ISP. Do not change network settings to fix a freeze that also locks the Windows desktop.
When the entire PC freezes, restarts, or shows a BSOD
A full lockup, looping audio, spontaneous restart, blue screen, or freeze in other games means VALORANT may only be exposing an existing system problem. Check Windows Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer for the time of the failure, and record any stop code.

Then troubleshoot the system itself:
- Remove CPU and GPU overclocks and undervolts.
- Temporarily disable XMP or EXPO and test RAM at stock settings.
- Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures while launching and playing. Do not rely on one universal temperature number; component limits vary by system.
- Update chipset and graphics drivers from the relevant manufacturer.
- Consider a motherboard BIOS update only after confirming the exact model and preparing your BitLocker recovery information.
- Test whether other games or normal Windows use also freeze.
If the machine becomes unbootable, use Windows Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment. A forced shutdown is an emergency recovery action, not a fix; repeated forced shutdowns can risk data loss. If problems occur across multiple games, investigate RAM, cooling, storage, power delivery, firmware, and Windows stability or contact the PC manufacturer.
VALORANT’s minimum requirements changed with the Unreal Engine 5.3 transition in Patch 11.02 on July 29, 2025. Check the current official requirements rather than relying on an old list; the change is documented in Riot’s Patch 11.02 notes.
If nothing works
Submit a Riot Support request with:
- The exact error code and a screenshot
- Whether Windows remains responsive
- The date the problem began
- Recent Windows, BIOS, graphics-driver, or VALORANT updates
- Your CPU, GPU, RAM, motherboard, and Windows edition/build
- Whether a clean boot changes the result
- Whether other games are affected
- The Riot logs requested by Riot Support
Contact Microsoft or the PC manufacturer for Windows crashes, firmware, BitLocker, or hardware instability; contact the GPU manufacturer for driver-specific failures; and contact your ISP for persistent packet loss.

- Repeatedly reinstalling VALORANT: this does not remove an overlay, driver, firmware, or Windows-service conflict.
- Enabling Secure Boot as a generic fix: it addresses particular Vanguard restrictions, not every loading-screen freeze.
- Permanently disabling Memory Integrity, antivirus, or Windows Firewall: this reduces security and should not be the normal solution.
- Blaming the internet for a hard lock: packet loss can stall gameplay but should not normally freeze the whole desktop.
- Running everything as administrator: use elevated permissions for installation or a specific test, not as a permanent default.
- Using registry cleaners, driver-updater tools, random DLLs, modified Vanguard files, or “FPS boosters”: these can worsen the problem and complicate diagnosis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Vanguard freeze Windows 11?
Vanguard can be involved when the evidence points to a VAN error, blocked driver, security restriction, or reproducible background-service conflict. A freeze alone does not prove that Vanguard is the cause.
Should Secure Boot and TPM be enabled for VALORANT?
Check them when Riot reports VAN9001, VAN9003, or a related Secure Boot or TPM restriction. They are not a universal remedy for graphics, cache, overlay, network, or hardware freezes.
Will reinstalling VALORANT reinstall Vanguard?
Not necessarily. Uninstall Riot Vanguard separately, restart Windows, reinstall from Riot’s official installer, and restart again when prompted.
Is a forced shutdown safe?
Use the power button only when Windows is completely unresponsive and no normal shutdown method works. It is emergency recovery, not a troubleshooting fix.
