Civilization VII is built around three connected historical chapters: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. You keep your leader throughout the campaign, but choose a different civilization as each Age begins. Knowing what changes—and what carries over—gives you the clearest starting point for your first game.
What is the basic structure of a Civilization VII campaign?
A full campaign has three Ages: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Each is a distinct chapter with its own civilizations, technologies, resources, units, buildings, and systems. Firaxis Creative Director Ed Beach summarized the structure in the developer diary: “There are three Ages for you to play.” Firaxis’ Ages developer diary describes each chapter as a focused Civilization campaign: you build a capital, explore, find resources, and compete or cooperate with other civilizations.
What changes—and what stays the same—when an Age ends?
Your leader remains the same across all three Ages, and relationships with other leaders persist. Your civilization does not: you select a new Age-specific civilization at each transition. Leaders also continue to develop attributes, so the leader is one thread of continuity while your empire’s civilization and available systems evolve.
The transition is more than a change of label. You choose the next civilization and decide which Legacies to retain. The world changes as well: the map expands, and resources, technologies, and other systems are updated for the new Age. Your next civilization options can be influenced by historical or geographic connections and by leader unlocks.

How do Ages progress?
Age Progress accumulates over turns and through milestones along Legacy Paths. When an Age ends, all players transition together. The game then moves everyone into the next chapter, where the civilization choice and retained Legacies shape how the campaign continues.
How long does an Age take?
Firaxis estimates that an Age lasts around 150–200 turns on standard speed, or roughly three to four hours of play. This is a developer estimate, not a guarantee: actual turn counts and elapsed time can vary by game and play pace. The Ages diary is the source for that estimate.

Where should a new player look for help?
Use the official Civilization VII site and its New Settlers Hub/Game Guide for information on leaders, civilizations, and gameplay mechanics. The publisher’s beginner guide is specifically framed around starting a first game.
For current mechanics or interface instructions, check the latest official material rather than relying on an older guide.
