How does Civilization VII’s Ages system work?
2K describes the game as a turn-based empire-building strategy game organized around distinct Ages of human history. Each Age has its own playable civilizations, resources, explorable land, and gameplay systems. As players reach milestones in science, culture, military, and economics, they can unlock advantages that carry into the next Age. Leaders and civilizations are chosen separately
Rather than tying a leader to one civilization, the game lets players select them independently. According to Firaxis, leaders have unique abilities and can gain customizable attributes, while civilizations provide their own bonuses and units. That creates combinations of leader abilities and civilization traits; it is a structural design change described by the publisher, not a claim about which combinations are strongest.
Other described parts of play
The publisher also identifies city-building, technological development, exploration, diplomacy, and warfare as parts of the experience, with solo and online multiplayer supported. These are 2K’s descriptions of the game; they are not a hands-on assessment.
