Civilization VII replaces the series’ single, continuous civilization arc with three shared campaign chapters: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. At each Age transition, you choose a new civilization while keeping your leader. That makes historical change a core strategic decision—but it also means the game’s long campaign is structured as a sequence of distinct stages rather than one uninterrupted civilization story.
What is new in Civilization VII?
The defining change is the Age system. Rather than guiding one civilization from the ancient world through the modern era, a campaign moves through Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. All players enter each new Age together. Some Age-specific elements end at a transition, while other parts of the empire carry forward. The official Civilization VII mechanics overview describes carryover as connected in part to the previous civilization and the player’s success.
Leaders and civilizations are now separate choices. Your chosen leader stays with you, while the civilization representing your empire can change at each Age. Firaxis executive producer Dennis Shirk described the design as a way to “mix-and-match” their strengths and devise new strategies in a PlayStation Blog preview. The result is a campaign about adapting your empire’s identity as well as developing it.
How do Ages work in Civ 7?
Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern
Each Age is a distinct playable chapter, with its own Age-specific elements. The transitions are synchronized: every player moves into the next Age together rather than advancing through the historical timeline on an independent schedule. That shared structure gives the campaign a common rhythm, but also makes the Age boundary an important part of planning.

What carries over at a transition?
The transition is not described as a complete reset, nor does everything persist unchanged. Some gameplay elements are specific to an Age; others carry over, with the previous civilization and your success among the factors involved. The official overview does not make every carryover outcome universal, so it is more accurate to think of each transition as a change in the empire’s structure than as either a clean restart or a simple continuation.
Age transitions and campaign momentum
The structure has a clear trade-off. A new civilization can make a transition feel like an opportunity to reshape your approach, but regular chapter breaks can interrupt the sense of building one civilization across centuries. A February 2025 review in The Atlantic found that Age-ending crises and objectives could give each chapter narrative cohesion, while also criticizing them as a potentially limiting checklist. The reviewer described the transition as at times “tedious, janky, stranded on the way to somewhere else.” Those observations concern the version reviewed at launch, not a verified assessment of the current build.
Can you choose a different leader and civilization?
Yes. You select a leader and a civilization independently, and the leader remains while the civilization can change at the Age transitions. This is a substantial change from the familiar idea of choosing one civilization and guiding it through the whole game. It gives the campaign more room for combinations, but also changes what “your civilization” means: the leader provides continuity while the empire’s represented civilization changes.

That flexibility is part of the strategic premise, not just a cosmetic choice. The game asks players to work with a shifting cultural and political identity over time. It also makes the transition itself a planning point, since the game describes carryover as depending partly on the outgoing civilization and the player’s achievements.

Is Civilization VII still the same kind of long strategy campaign?
It is still built around a long campaign, but its structure is different. Instead of one uninterrupted arc centered on a single civilization, it is a sequence of three Age-length chapters connected by synchronized transitions. Whether that feels like meaningful historical change or an imposed break depends on how much you value the chance to adapt versus the continuity of a single civilization’s rise.
There is also a distinction between this campaign redesign and account-level progression. The official support explanation describes Foundation and Leader progression and Mementos as meta-progression or rewards. It says a leader can equip two Mementos, and that multiplayer setup can disable them. These systems sit alongside the Age structure; they are not the same thing as an empire’s in-campaign carryover.

What platform and play options were announced?
Civilization VII launched worldwide on February 11, 2025. The launch announcement listed PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, and Mac and Linux via Steam. This is the launch-platform list, not confirmation of current availability or feature parity. The publisher’s launch announcement also set out the following multiplayer caps and conditions:
| Platforms | Antiquity and Exploration | Modern |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox, PlayStation, and PC | Up to 5 players | Up to 8 players |
| Nintendo Switch | Up to 4 players | Up to 6 players |
Those player limits are from the February 2025 launch announcement. It also said online features require an internet connection and a 2K Account; online play on Xbox and PlayStation consoles requires a paid platform subscription. Check current platform terms before planning a multiplayer game, since launch information may not reflect later changes.
The PlayStation preview described full campaigns spanning all three Ages as well as shorter matches limited to one Age. Firaxis also presented a redesigned radial HUD and DualSense haptic effects for PS5. Those are launch-era descriptions for that platform; they do not establish that every platform has the same interface, haptics, or present-day match options.

What does the game’s historical representation involve?
Historical representation is a design question, not a simple endorsement. The Associated Press reported that Firaxis worked with the Shawnee Tribe on Tecumseh and details of Shawnee culture, and that the studio acknowledged past franchise missteps in its treatment of history, including Indigenous peoples and colonization. AP also reported that 2K and Firaxis were donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to language-revitalization programs and facilities.
That collaboration matters, but it does not erase the tension in a strategy game built around settling land and exploiting resources. AP’s reporting includes the view that representation in that framework can remain contested. The relevant question is therefore not only who appears in the game, but how their history is framed within the systems the game asks players to use.
What does the launch information establish—and what does it not?
Take-Two and 2K said at launch that the Civilization franchise had sold in more than 73 million copies worldwide. That is a publisher-reported, franchise-wide sold-in figure, not a sales total for Civilization VII.
Post-launch balance changes also mean launch-era observations should not be treated as timeless. For example, the June 23, 2025 patch notes document changes to Isabella’s abilities. Those notes establish that balance changed after launch, but do not establish the latest balance state.
The official edition FAQ confirms a physical Collector’s Edition with themed collectibles. It does not establish current stock or pricing.
