The list includes optional late-game and post-game encounters, so it is not a ranking of story bosses alone.

The ranking weighs defensive timing and attack-chain length, the cost of a missed input, build and preparation demands, and pressures such as status effects, elemental threats, or resource drain. Those factors matter because the game combines turn-based choices with real-time dodges, parries, counters, combo rhythms, and free-aim actions; gear, stats, skills, and character synergies also shape a fight. Optional. Clea waits behind the central door in the Flying Manor. Reaching the encounter requires clearing four gatekeeper fights first, so the challenge includes accumulated fatigue and pressure on resources as well as the boss itself.

What the list means for story-only players
If you want to know which required fights may present the biggest obstacle, focus on Renoir and the Paintress: they are the two mandatory encounters named in this ranking, with Renoir placed higher. The top of the overall list instead reflects optional endgame difficulty, including post-game content, tower attrition, and side encounters that demand particular preparation.
That endgame scope is possible because free post-launch content expanded the game. Sandfall Interactive’s Thank You Update announcement says Verso’s Drafts is accessible in Act III and requires Esquie’s underwater ability; the update also added new late-game Endless Tower boss battles, weapons, Luminas, Photo Mode, and quality-of-life changes. Those additions explain why a current hardest-boss list can extend beyond the original story progression.
How to prepare for difficult attempts
- Learn the defensive sequence. Since real-time dodge and parry timing is part of the combat system, prioritize recognizing attack chains and practicing their timing over relying only on turn-based actions.
- Match your setup to the pressure. The ranking points to different problems—AP drain, status effects, varied elemental threats, and gear demands—so there is no single preparation plan that fits every boss.
- Use retries to practice. The official Patch 1.4.0 notes announced Battle Retry after defeat and a Lumina-cost display in the Pictos menu. Retry can make repeated practice easier, while the cost display helps with build planning; neither changes the ranking itself.
Why another player’s hardest boss may differ
This is one guide’s editorial ordering, not a measured comparison across players. Timing skill, selected difficulty, party builds, and whether optional post-game fights count can all change which encounter feels hardest. The ranking is most useful as a map of different challenge types: Simon’s punishing attack chain, Clea’s run-up, Painted Love’s attrition, Serpenphare’s AP pressure, and the story demands of Renoir and the Paintress.
