Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG with real-time mechanics, set in a world inspired by Belle Époque France. Released April 24, 2025, it is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. 1. Battles are turn-based, but timing matters
Sandfall Interactive describes Expedition 33 as a “turn-based RPG with real-time mechanics.” You select physical attacks, elemental attacks, and skills from menus, while real-time elements add timing to combat. It is not a purely action game, nor is it simply a conventional turn-based RPG without timing demands. The official game page gives the studio’s overview.

2. The story centers on stopping a repeating cycle of death
The expedition sets out to destroy the Paintress so she can never paint death again. That premise gives the journey its urgency; you can learn the specifics as you play without needing story spoilers beforehand. Sandfall’s official overview describes the quest.
3. Its world takes inspiration from Belle Époque France
The setting draws on Belle Époque France, according to the game’s official description. Treat that as an artistic inspiration rather than a claim that the game recreates a real historical place or period.

4. Exploration is not limited to the main route
The overworld includes hidden oddities and distinctive locations as well as level-based areas. Some exploration leads to optional side quests and battles, so the game offers more than a straight sequence of story encounters. The Expedition 33 Team’s release announcement outlines these activities.
5. Optional encounters give you room to test your builds
The developers describe optional battles as tough and say side quests offer chances to test skills and engage with character-building mechanics. That makes them useful opportunities to explore how your party is developing, but it does not mean every optional activity is required or equally difficult.

6. Camp supports both party management and quieter character moments
At camp, you can upgrade weapons and adjust builds. You can also listen to the score on an in-game record player and talk with teammates about their stories and motivations. It is a place for practical preparation as well as optional character-focused conversations, according to the official release announcement.
7. The game is already out
Expedition 33 launched on April 24, 2025. The date appears in Sandfall Interactive’s release announcement, which was published January 23, 2025 and updated April 24, 2025.

8. It is listed for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S
The official publisher and rating listings identify PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series platforms. Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe’s product page lists PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S; the ESRB entry lists Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. Physical editions and stock depend on territory, so check local retailers for the format and platform you want.
9. Age ratings vary by region, and the content is mature
In North America, the ESRB rates the game M for Mature 17+, citing Blood and Gore, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes, and Violence. Its content summary mentions blood, stabbing, decapitation, shooting, sexual innuendo, and strong language. The European publisher page lists PEGI 18+. 10. Collector’s Edition contents and availability are separate questions
The official Collector’s Edition description lists the game, a 20.3 cm hand-painted resin Monolith Music Box Statuette, a 48-page hardcover Expeditioner’s Journal artbook, a SteelBook, and digital deluxe content. The official page marks the edition sold out and says a restock is not guaranteed. Its physical distribution also varies by territory:
- Americas: Maximum Entertainment is the physical distributor; GameStop is the exclusive US distributor of the Collector’s and Lumière editions.
- Europe: Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe distributes physical versions. The Lumière edition is distributed only in Italy, Spain, and Portugal; Laced Records is the exclusive distributor of European Collector’s Editions.
- Japan: SEGA distributes the physical version, and only the Standard Edition is available.
