What the Game Pass report actually says
PC Gamer’s April 22, 2026 report described a broader plan to bring more games from the Call of Duty back catalog to Game Pass during 2026. Its source was unnamed, and the report did not provide a title-specific confirmation or arrival date for the 2009 Modern Warfare 2. That makes the report a reason to watch for an announcement, not proof that this particular game is “set to join soon.”

Xbox’s official Game Pass catalog has filters for “Coming to Game Pass,” “Recently added,” and publisher. Its reviewed listing did not establish a future date for the 2009 game. Because catalog listings can change, check the catalog and official Xbox or Activision announcements for the latest status.
Which Modern Warfare 2 do you mean?
The year matters: three different products are easy to confuse when searching for “MW2.”

| Product | What it is | What the available Game Pass information establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) | The original game, including an Xbox 360 release. | No title-specific Game Pass confirmation, date, region, or tier is established by the cited sources. |
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered (2020) | A separate remastered campaign release. | The cited sources do not establish its Game Pass status. |
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) | A later, separate game, styled with Roman numerals. | Activision’s FAQ says active Game Pass Console, PC, or Ultimate subscribers have access to its standard edition. Those terms apply to the 2022 game, not the 2009 original. |
Activision’s Modern Warfare II editions FAQ covers the 2022 release. Its subscription information is not evidence that the 2009 game has been added.
Can you play the 2009 original through cloud gaming?
Activision’s Xbox cloud gaming guidance describes access to the 2022 Modern Warfare II: it requires ownership of that game on Xbox and an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription. This is not a cloud-access offer for the 2009 title, and should not be used to infer its Game Pass availability.

How to verify an eventual announcement
- Open the Xbox Game Pass catalog and check “Coming to Game Pass” or “Recently added.” Search for the full name and the 2009 release year.
- Look for a title-specific Xbox or Activision announcement that identifies the game, release date, platform, region, and applicable subscription tier. A broad statement about older Call of Duty games is not enough to settle those details.
- Match the listing to the product you mean. Confirm it says Modern Warfare 2 (2009), rather than Campaign Remastered (2020) or Modern Warfare II (2022).
Xbox Wire’s October 15, 2024 Game Pass lineup announcement is an example of a title-specific post listing games with platforms and dates. It is a useful model for what confirmation looks like, but does not announce the 2009 MW2.

One edition-specific option to look for is the original Xbox 360 release. Search using “Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 2009 Xbox 360,” then verify the listing identifies the 2009 game and check the disc condition, seller, and stock before buying. Current retailer availability has not been established here. Do not mistake the 2022 game or the 2020 Campaign Remastered edition for the original.
