Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is turn-based, but its fights ask you to react in real time: you choose an action on your character’s turn, time inputs to strengthen some attacks, and defend while enemies act. Start by learning enemy patterns with dodges; try parries once you can read an attack’s rhythm. You can also widen the timing windows or automate QTE inputs if the action timing is getting in the way.
How does the battle system work?
Sandfall Interactive calls the system “Reactive Turn Based.” In its official gameplay preview, the team explains that players input commands when attacking and remain reactive while enemies attack. In practice, the turn order tells you whose turn it is; when one of your characters acts, you select an attack, skill, item, or free-aim action. Real-time prompts then add timing to parts of offense and defense. This does not replace the turn structure: your choices still happen in turns, but you are not simply waiting through enemy actions.

What happens on your turn
- Attack: Use a basic attack. Timed inputs can improve offensive results, and basic actions can help generate AP.
- Skill: Spend AP on an ability. Some skills include a prompt or several chained inputs; better timing can improve their effects.
- Item: Use an item when the situation calls for it.
- Free aim: Aim at targets directly. It can let you hit a weak point or a special object in the encounter.
Skills use AP, so pay attention to the resource as you choose actions. Successful parries are one possible AP source, according to Sandfall Interactive’s preview; the amount you gain can depend on build effects.
Why free aim can matter
Free aim is not only a way to add damage. In the official preview, the Goblu encounter includes flowers that can be shot to close their buds and limit the enemy’s buffs. That example shows why it is worth looking over the battlefield: an encounter-specific target may be more useful than repeating the same attack sequence. Xbox Wire also recommends using free-aim shots to soften targets when you have AP to spare; its guide notes that free aim costs AP in battle and does not end your turn. See Sandfall Interactive’s game overview and Xbox Wire’s beginner tips.

How do you parry in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
Press the defensive input in time with an enemy attack. The official explanation is comparative rather than frame-specific: dodging has a wider timing window, while parrying is stricter. A successful dodge avoids the incoming attack; a successful parry negates damage and can reward AP. If you parry every hit in an enemy’s combo, you can also trigger a counterattack. The sources do not establish a universal millisecond or frame count, so learn the timing from each enemy’s animation rather than relying on a fixed number.
Dodge or parry?
| Choice | Timing | Successful input | Additional reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dodge | More forgiving | Avoids the attack | No additional reward established in the cited official guidance |
| Parry | Tighter | Negates damage | Can provide AP; parrying a full combo can enable a counterattack |
Neither option is always better. Dodge is a sound choice while learning an unfamiliar move; parry offers more potential upside when you can read the pattern. Some attacks call for a different response, such as jumping or a Gradient Counter, so follow the on-screen prompt instead of trying to parry everything. For additional defensive guidance, see AUTOMATON WEST’s guide to dodges, parries, jumps, and Gradient Counters.

What should beginners do if the timing is too hard?
- Start with dodge. Watch the enemy’s movement and use the more forgiving dodge window while you learn the attack. Xbox Wire likewise recommends getting consistent with dodges before experimenting with parries.
- Learn one pattern at a time. When an enemy repeats a move, watch for the cue and practice responding to that specific attack rather than trying to master every defense at once.
- Try parry after the rhythm feels familiar. Its tighter window can bring AP and, against a full parried combo, a counterattack. Treat those rewards as potential rather than guaranteed in every build.
- Change the timing settings if needed. Difficulty options can widen dodge and parry windows, and automatic QTE inputs can reduce the demand for realtime timing. These are valid ways to make the combat more manageable, not signs that you must play a particular way.
Sandfall Interactive has also said players who prefer less realtime play can use items and strategies to counterbalance it. Dodging remains a viable defense; mastering parries is not a prerequisite for engaging with the turn-based choices.
How does Break work?
Break is useful for creating an opening, but its details here come from the secondary source GuideVault’s combat guide, not the official gameplay pages. That guide says damage fills an enemy’s Break bar, but filling the bar by itself is not enough: a move marked for Break must then land to trigger the Broken state and stun the enemy.

- Immersive World: Explore a visually stunning alien planet with breathtaking details and treacherous terrain.
- Watch the enemy’s Break bar as you attack.
- When it is full, use a skill with a Break flag.
- Use the resulting opening to press your advantage while the enemy is stunned.
The cited official pages do not specify a numeric threshold or establish a universal stun duration, resistance rule, or damage multiplier. Treat the bar and the skill’s Break designation as the practical cues, rather than assuming an exact percentage or that any move will trigger Broken.

Read the encounter, not just the turn order
The visible order helps you plan, but special targets and enemy-specific mechanics can change which action is most useful. Check the battlefield for objects or weak points before committing to a routine.

Build around the way you want to defend
Pictos and Luminas offer ways to customize a party. Xbox Wire says a Picto becomes mastered after four victories while equipped; once mastered, its passive can be used as a Lumina by party members with enough Lumina points. This is a progression option, not something you need to understand before learning the basic turn and defense loop. The same Xbox Wire guide covers this system.
