What makes combat in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 different?
Combat is turn-based at its core, but battles ask you to react as well as choose commands. You can dodge and parry incoming attacks, counter, use rhythm-based attacks, and free-aim at targets. That mix makes timing and attention part of each turn rather than leaving every action to menus alone. Bandai Namco’s game overview and PlayStation’s game page describe these combat elements.

Party setup matters, too: gear, stats, skills, and character synergies let you tailor how your group fights. The real-time inputs are part of a broader RPG system, not a replacement for planning your characters and their abilities.
Which difficulty should you choose?
The official descriptions list three settings. Their main practical difference is how strong enemies are and how much time you have to execute defensive actions.

PlayStation’s FAQ says you can change difficulty at any time. That makes Story a reasonable place to begin if you are unsure: you can move to a tougher setting if the timing feels too forgiving, or lower the challenge if battles are getting in the way of the story.
In Xbox Wire’s January 23, 2025 Developer Direct coverage, Sandfall Interactive creative director Guillaume Broche explained the design: “So we have difficulty options in the game, and depending on the difficulty options the parry window and dodge window will be bigger or smaller…” The interview reinforces that difficulty changes the timing demand as well as enemy challenge.

What did the updates add?
The official update announcements describe additions to retries, accessibility, performance, and game content. They do not announce a new difficulty setting.
Patch 1.4.0 — July 30, 2025
Sandfall Interactive’s Patch 1.4.0 notes added a Battle Retry prompt after defeat, so players can retry without first navigating away from the loss. The patch also added DLSS and XeSS frame generation and low-latency support on compatible GPUs, optional dialogue autoplay, separate exploration and combat volume sliders, and an icon improvement intended to help colorblind players read Lune’s Stains, alongside other fixes. These are quality-of-life, accessibility, and compatible-PC features—not a new difficulty mode.

Thank You Update — December 2025
The free Thank You Update rolled out across platforms and regions, according to Sandfall Interactive’s news listing. It added Verso’s Drafts, 13 weapons, 16 additional Luminas, costumes and hairstyles, photo mode, quality-of-life improvements, language support, and late-game Endless Tower boss challenges. PlayStation Blog’s update coverage also presents these as new content and features, not a fourth difficulty setting.

No. A showcase of combat, or an update that adds new encounters and features, is not evidence of a new difficulty setting. The official difficulty descriptions still identify Story, Expeditioner, and Expert; the cited update notes describe their additions separately. If you are choosing a challenge level, use those three settings as your guide rather than treating later content as a newly announced mode.
