Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG that adds real-time dodges, parries and aimed attacks to its battles. Its story follows an expedition trying to stop a recurring cycle of death in a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France. Those official details establish the game’s premise and core combat hook—but they are not enough to support a firsthand review verdict on how well it plays.
What kind of game is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
Sandfall Interactive’s game is a turn-based role-playing game with real-time actions during combat. Bandai Namco describes it as a “ground-breaking” RPG with “unique real-time mechanics”; those are the publisher’s promotional terms, rather than an independent assessment of the game. Its setting draws on Belle Époque France. Bandai Namco’s official game page

How does the combat work?
Combat combines turn-based decisions with timed responses. According to SEGA’s Japanese distributor description, players can dodge or parry enemy attacks in real time and use free aim to target weaknesses. That gives a clearer picture of the system than “turn-based” alone: actions are planned in turns, but some encounters also ask for real-time input. Official descriptions do not establish how forgiving the timing is or how satisfying the system feels in play.
What is the story about?
The story centers on the Paintress, who marks a number on a monolith each year. People of that age then disappear. Expedition 33 sets out from Lumière to stop the cycle before the number 33 is painted. The official overview names Gustave, Maelle and other Expeditioners, and describes a journey following earlier expeditions through a world of hidden quests and surreal enemies. Collector’s Edition contents and availability
The official Collector’s Edition page lists the game, a 20.3 cm hand-painted resin Monolith Music Box statuette, a 48-page hardcover Expeditioner’s Journal, a Steelbook and a Digital Deluxe Upgrade Pack. The page reports the edition sold out and says the team cannot promise a restock; that is not a guarantee about current retailer inventory. The artbook documented here is the hardcover journal included in this edition; a separately sold artbook is not established by the cited official information. Bandai Namco’s Collector’s Edition page
Physical editions depend on territory
The Collector’s Edition page says Maximum Entertainment distributes physical versions in the Americas; the US Collector’s and Lumière editions are exclusive to GameStop; Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe distributes physical editions in Europe; Laced Records has the sold-out European Collector’s Edition; and SEGA distributes the Japanese physical edition, where only the Standard Edition is available. These are the page’s distribution details, not a real-time stock check. SEGA’s Japanese announcement documents a PS5 packaged version in Japan, priced at ¥7,400 including tax and rated CERO Z. That price, rating and format apply to the Japanese release, not other markets. Bandai Namco’s distribution details · SEGA’s Japan announcement
