That announcement did not confirm a return of the original PlayStation startup screen: the boot sequence was part of the temporary December 2024 anniversary rollout, a separate feature from the home-screen designs.
Did Sony bring back the PS1 boot screen on PS5?
Not according to Sony’s April 23, 2025 announcement. Sony confirmed the return of four classic console designs for customizing the PS5 home screen, but did not say that the original PlayStation boot animation or startup sequence had returned. The two features should not be confused.
During the December 2024 30th-anniversary rollout, PS5 owners received a PS1-style startup sequence after installing the update and restarting, along with home-screen customizations inspired by the PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4. Contemporary reports described the feature as temporary. Sony’s later announcement restored the four home-screen designs, not necessarily the boot sequence.
How to find the classic designs in PS5 settings
Sony calls the customization feature Appearance. Open Settings and look for Appearance to choose among the four generation-inspired home-screen designs. Sony’s April announcement identifies Settings as the place to access it but does not specify a more detailed menu path.

The choices borrow visual cues and audio feedback from their respective console generations. They change the PS5’s presentation, not its underlying hardware or game performance.
What the four PS5 designs offer

How to check for a PS5 system update
If Appearance is not available, check the console’s system software. Sony’s general update instructions are:
- Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software if an update is available.
Sony also provides a USB update method for update failures. Follow the official PlayStation Support instructions and use only official update files and procedures. The support page explains general system updates; it does not promise a separate anniversary update or provide a way to restore the boot animation.

Why Sony restored the home-screen designs
Sony said it was bringing back the four console designs after a positive community response. Shuzo Kikuchi, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of product management, wrote: “Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from our community, we’re happy to bring back the look and feel of the four console designs for players to customize the home screen on PS5!”
The broader anniversary celebration began with Sony’s September 2024 announcement of a separate 30th Anniversary Collection of limited-edition hardware. That collection and its products are distinct from the PS5 software customizations.
