Clockwork Labs announced a $22 million Series A on June 16, 2022, led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). The company said the funding would support its community sandbox MMORPG, BitCraft, and an unannounced database technology. This was a 2022 funding milestone, not a new round.
What Clockwork Labs announced
In its June 16, 2022 announcement, Clockwork Labs said it had closed $22 million in Series A funding led by Andreessen Horowitz. The company identified Roblox founder and CEO David Baszucki as a private investor. The release also named Supercell, CCP Games CEO Hilmar Petursson, Unity co-founder David Helgason, and Skycatcher among existing investors or industry supporters; it did not describe all of them as participants in this round.
Clockwork Labs said it would use the capital to further develop BitCraft and an unannounced database technology powering the game. Co-founder Alessandro Asoni said the additional capital would let the studio scale its team and better equip it to take on the challenges of building the game world.
What BitCraft is
Clockwork Labs describes BitCraft as a community sandbox MMORPG in a large, procedurally generated world that players can shape. Its 2022 pitch emphasized a single, unsharded world and cooperation over combat. The game’s official site describes activities including settlement building, crafting, exploration, survival, trade, and player governance.

That is the developer’s intended design, not an independent assessment of how the game plays. The company’s public server repository likewise characterizes it around cooperative city-building, crafting, exploration, and survival. The repository contains server code, not the game client or tools for connecting to official servers.
How the game’s development and access have changed
- June 16, 2022: Clockwork Labs announced the financing while describing BitCraft as Pre-Alpha.
- March 6, 2025: The company announced a move to Steam Early Access and Beta. It said the game would remain in development and that world wipes might still be needed. In the same post, it set a historical Early Access price of $30 starting May 29, 2025, while saying it still intended for the game eventually to become free-to-play. Those were launch plans, not confirmation of current price or future policy. See the March 2025 Early Access announcement.
- February 9, 2026: Clockwork Labs said it planned a world-only wipe for a new Early Access world, with character XP carrying over. It also said that the Early Access world would not be wiped when the final world launched. These are the company’s stated plans in its wipe update, and later notices could change them.
- September 2026: The official site displayed a September 24 patch entry and a September 30 Partner Program application notice, and continued to direct players to Steam. That establishes the dated notices, but not the current store price or Partner Program compensation.
What the $22 million figure does—and doesn’t—mean
The $22 million is the amount Clockwork Labs said it closed in its June 2022 Series A. The announcement does not establish that this was the company’s total capital raised, nor does the round size establish player numbers or commercial traction. Separately, in its March 2025 Early Access post, the company reported a team of more than 40 developers, artists, and engineers; that is a company-reported figure, not an independently verified headcount.
