cmifw.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, not a Visual C++ runtime or game-specific file. If Windows reports that cmifw.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows components instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is the Windows Defender Firewall rule-configuration plug-in. It normally belongs in protected Windows locations such as C:WindowsSystem32; architecture-specific copies can also exist under C:WindowsSysWOW64. Its exact version and size depend on the Windows build and architecture.
Before fixing cmifw.dll
Do not download cmifw.dll from a random DLL website. A copied file may have the wrong Windows build, architecture, language, or signature. It may also be malicious, and placing it beside a game or application can hide the underlying Windows component-store problem.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows recovery tools, Microsoft installation media, and the original Windows installation. The file’s presence alone does not prove that it is authentic. Check its path and signature:

- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Locate
cmifw.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Confirm that the signer is Microsoft and that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A copy in Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory should not be trusted automatically.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates.
A failed or interrupted update can leave a protected Windows DLL missing or mismatched. Start with Windows Update because it can restore the correct files for your exact build.
Windows 11
- Select Start > Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open the application that displayed the
cmifw.dllerror.
Windows 10
- Select Start > Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not copy a DLL manually between computers.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if the percentage appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program or Windows feature that produced the error.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired damaged files, or could not repair some files. The last result means the component store or another part of Windows needs further repair, not that you should download cmifw.dll.
If you want a guided scan that identifies repair issues without repeatedly guessing which Windows command to run, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it finds; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC remain the appropriate Windows repair path.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Antivirus protection may quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy. Do not restore a file only because an error message names it. First verify that the file belongs in a Windows system directory and has a valid Microsoft signature.

- Review recent actions involving
cmifw.dll. - If the item is in quarantine, inspect its path and threat details.
- Restore it only when the path is a legitimate Windows location and the Microsoft signature is trustworthy.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM and SFC again if Windows still reports the file as missing.
If the file was removed because it was genuinely malicious, do not restore it. Run a full scan and, if malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline. Windows servicing should restore a legitimate protected component after the system is clean.
Fix 4: Repair the affected application after Windows is healthy
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
A program may display a cmifw.dll error while triggering a damaged Windows component indirectly. If DISM, SFC, and Windows Update complete successfully but only one application still fails, repair that application.
- Save your work and close the application.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not work, select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the application again only from its developer or publisher.
- Install it using the official installer and test it again.
Do not place cmifw.dll in the program’s installation folder. Reinstalling the application is useful only when that application is damaged; it is not a substitute for repairing Windows.

Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
Time needed: 2 minutes.
Do not normally run:
regsvr32 cmifw.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. cmifw.dll is a Windows Firewall rule-configuration plug-in, and its COM-style exports do not mean it should be manually registered.
The command may produce an error saying that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not prove that the file is missing. It means registration is not the applicable repair.
Use DISM and SFC for a damaged Windows component instead.
Fix 6: Check Windows features and Firewall services
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Because cmifw.dll is associated with Windows Defender Firewall configuration, confirm that Windows Firewall has not been disabled by aggressive cleanup software or a security product.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Defender Firewall.
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic if it has been changed.
- Select Start if the service is stopped.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart Windows and test again.
You can also check the Windows feature list:
- Open Start and search for
Windows Features. - Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the listed features without randomly disabling or enabling components.
- If a recently changed feature relates to networking or security, undo that change and restart.
If the service cannot start, return to DISM and SFC. A service failure can be a symptom of wider system corruption.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the wider system points to a driver problem
Time needed: 15–30 minutes.
A cmifw.dll error is not normally fixed by a display, chipset, or game driver. Consider driver work only when the problem began after a driver change, Device Manager shows an error, or several networking and security functions are failing.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Network adapters or Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- If the issue began immediately after an update, return to the same tab and select Roll Back Driver, when available.
If you are manually checking many devices and versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Driver updating is optional and does not replace DISM, SFC, or reinstalling the affected program.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Use Windows recovery when servicing fails
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours.
Escalate when DISM cannot repair the component store, SFC repeatedly fails, or the problem began after a bad update, system modification, or malware incident.
Try System Restore
- Open Start.
- Search for
Create a restore point. - Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows.
System Restore normally affects system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs rather than personal documents. It cannot help if restore points were disabled or the damage already existed in the selected restore point.

Reinstall the current Windows version on Windows 11
On supported Windows 11 systems:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available.
If recovery still fails, use an in-place repair installation from official Windows installation media. Back up important files first. A clean installation is a later option when the installation is severely damaged or malware cannot be removed reliably.

What causes cmifw.dll errors?
The filename in the message is not always the original cause. Common causes include:
| Cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Missing or corrupted protected Windows file | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| Interrupted Windows update | Install updates, restart, then repair Windows |
| Antivirus quarantine | Check Protection history and verify path and signature |
| Wrong manually copied DLL | Remove the copy through a legitimate repair process |
| Architecture mismatch | Restore the correct Windows-managed copy |
| Malware or disk damage | Scan the system, check disk health, then repair Windows |
| One damaged application | Repair or reinstall that application after Windows repair |
| Persistent component-store corruption | System Restore or Windows repair reinstall |
The file exists in both x86 and x64 variants across Windows releases. A 32-bit file is not interchangeable with a 64-bit file, and the correct location depends on Windows architecture and the component being loaded. Historical Microsoft file tables document multiple Windows versions and architectures, so the exact version should be judged against the installed Windows build rather than a generic DLL listing.
FAQ
Is cmifw.dll safe?
Yes, it is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component when it is in a normal Windows system location and carries a valid Microsoft signature. A file with the same name in an application folder, temporary folder, or download directory requires separate inspection.
Is cmifw.dll part of Windows 10 and Windows 11?
It is associated with Windows releases including Windows 10-era builds and earlier Windows versions. The exact file version depends on the operating-system build and servicing level. Do not use a historical version as a universal replacement.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the first response. cmifw.dll is a Windows Defender Firewall component, not normally a Visual C++ or DirectX runtime. Repair Windows first. Install an application runtime only when the affected application specifically requires it and its official documentation identifies that dependency.
Why does a game report cmifw.dll?
A game can trigger a Windows component indirectly during launch. The message does not prove that the game needs a game-specific DLL or that the game installation is the original cause.
What if the error appears only in one program?
After repairing Windows, use that program’s Repair option or reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer. If several Windows tools and unrelated programs show the error, prioritize Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and recovery instead.
Can I fix it by registering the DLL?
Normally no. regsvr32 is not a universal missing-DLL repair command, and a registration-entry-point error does not mean that cmifw.dll is absent.
