“The program can’t start because cnb_0284.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix the problem.” cnb_0284.dll errors usually point to an incomplete or damaged Canon printer-driver installation.

That is why copying a file from another computer is a poor repair. The correct component depends on the printer model, Canon package, Windows release, and application architecture.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer package

Identify the printer model
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.

If reinstalling the package restores printing and the Canon application opens without the error, the repair is complete. If the same message returns, continue with the cleanup and dependency checks below rather than copying cnb_0284.dll manually.
Fix 2: Remove the broken printer and reinstall cleanly
A failed uninstall can leave an old printer queue or driver package behind.

- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.

- Run the installer before reconnecting the USB printer, unless Canon’s instructions say otherwise.

- Print a test page.
If several Canon printers or utilities have been installed over time, do not remove unrelated packages blindly. Removing the wrong package can create another missing component without fixing the original application.
Fix 3: Check Device Manager and driver architecture
Device Manager can reveal a failed printer driver, but it may not contain Canon’s full scanning or maintenance utilities.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Imaging devices.
- Find the Canon device.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For the most reliable result, use Device Manager to inspect or remove a failed device, then install the model-specific package from Canon. Windows cannot always restore Canon utilities through Device Manager alone.
Architecture matters. A 32-bit Canon application can require a 32-bit driver component even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not decide this by copying the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64. Let the Canon installer select the appropriate files for the printer and operating system.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have quarantined a Canon driver file, especially after an old package was modified or a printer utility was partially removed.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon installer again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove the Canon DLL is present. Reinstall the Canon package afterward.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Why you should not download or register the DLL
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, a mismatched version, or a file that does not belong to your printer. Even a clean replacement may fail because the real problem is a missing dependency, damaged installation, or incompatible Canon package.
Do not copy cnb_0284.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, the Windows directory, or an application folder. Those locations do not make an arbitrary driver module correct.
Also do not run regsvr32 cnb_0284.dll as a routine fix. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver module may not support registration, and an entry-point or compatibility error does not prove that the file is defective.
