Remove the damaged installation
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.

Install the package
- Run the Canon installer you downloaded.
- Follow its connection instructions.
- If it asks you to disconnect the printer, do so.
- Allow the installer to place the driver files.
- Reconnect or power on the printer only when instructed.
- Print a Windows test page.
To test it, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the Canon printer, choose Printer properties, and select Print Test Page.

A 32-bit DLL cannot be used as a substitute for a 64-bit driver package, and copying a 64-bit file into a 32-bit application directory does not solve the underlying dependency.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Check System type under Device specifications.
Use the Canon package specifically offered for that Windows installation and printer model. Do not rely on historical file listings that report conflicting bitness or sizes.
If the printer is very old, the current Windows release may not support its legacy package. Try Canon’s model-specific downloads first. If no compatible package is available, Windows may provide only limited printing functionality through a generic driver, or the printer may require an older supported environment.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove a driver component after installation.

In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for a Canon-related detection or quarantined DLL.
- Review the file path, detection name, and originating installer.
Restore a file only when it is clearly part of the trusted Canon package and the installer came from Canon. Otherwise, remove the damaged installation, download a fresh package from Canon, and run a malware scan.
Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion just to suppress the error. A file located in System32 or DriverStore is not automatically safe or native to Windows. Its publisher, digital signature, parent driver package, and installation source all matter.
Fix 5: Remove the old driver package properly
If Windows keeps selecting a broken Canon driver, remove the unused package through Windows tools.
Use Print Server Properties
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Select any printer.
- Choose Print server properties from the toolbar or menu.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old Canon driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct Canon package again.

- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Open Printers, Print queues, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Choose Uninstall device.
- Select the option to remove the driver package if shown.
- Restart Windows.
Never delete arbitrary folders under DriverStoreFileRepository. Removing the wrong repository files can break unrelated devices and Windows driver servicing.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They do not replace a missing third-party Canon driver, so use them as a secondary check rather than the main fix.
First install pending Windows updates and restart:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Search for
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
DISM should run before SFC because SFC may need a healthy Windows component source. If SFC reports that no integrity violations were found, that does not prove the Canon DLL is present. Canon’s file is not necessarily a protected Windows system file.
Repeating repair commands without knowing what changed can waste time while the actual printer package remains broken. Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Printer-driver components are normally installed through the driver package and its INF configuration.
Running this command:
regsvr32 cnb_0296.dll
is unlikely to repair the problem. It may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. Do not copy the DLL into the current folder, System32, SysWOW64, or a Canon application directory simply to make regsvr32 find it.

Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s documentation specifically says that the particular DLL is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. There is no reliable evidence that cnb_0296.dll requires that treatment.
When the installer still fails
If the official installer cannot complete:
- Remove the Canon printer from Printers & scanners.
- Uninstall related Canon software.
- Remove the old driver package through Print Server Properties or Device Manager.
- Restart Windows.
- Restart the Print Spooler service:
