- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for Canon entries and record the exact model number.
- Select the printer and note whether it is connected by USB, Wi-Fi, or another method.
If no Canon printer is listed, check Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Look for old or disconnected Canon entries.
Do not guess the model from the DLL name. The filename does not identify a single confirmed printer model.
2. Check your Windows architecture
The driver must match the Windows installation and printer model.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Under System type, check whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
A 32-bit DLL can legitimately belong to a 32-bit printer component. That does not mean it belongs in System32, and manually moving it between system folders will not make an incompatible driver work.
3. Download the correct package
Open Canon’s official support site and search for the exact printer model. Select your Windows version and architecture, then download the current printer driver or complete setup package offered for that model.
If Windows Update supplies the correct driver, Microsoft recommends using it as the general first choice for printer-driver updates. If it does not provide the required package, use the printer manufacturer’s official support page.

4. Remove the existing Canon installation
First remove the printer:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
Then remove Canon software:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Uninstall Canon printer software, utilities, and driver entries related to the affected model.
- Restart Windows.
If the Canon installer provides its own uninstall program, use that instead of deleting folders manually.
5. Install the driver again
Run the Canon installer as an administrator:
- Open the downloaded installer’s folder.
- Right-click the setup file.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
The repair worked if the printer installs without the DLL message, the Canon utility opens normally, and a test page prints. If the same error returns, continue with the driver cleanup and checks below rather than downloading cnb_0318.dll separately.

Fix 2: Remove a stale driver package with Device Manager
A failed installation can leave an old Canon driver registered even after the printer disappears from Settings.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a Canon device or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, return to Printers & scanners, select Add device, and install the official Canon package again.
If Device Manager shows only a generic printer, do not remove unrelated hardware. Remove only the Canon device or the failed printer entry connected to this error.
For deeper cleanup, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers, select Print server properties, open the Drivers tab, and remove an obsolete Canon driver only when you are certain it belongs to the affected printer. Windows may prevent removal while a printer still uses the package, so remove the printer first and restart.
Fix 3: Check Windows Update
Windows may have a compatible driver even when the original Canon package is old.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if available.
- Install a Canon printer driver that matches the model.
- Restart Windows.
If no Canon driver appears, that does not necessarily mean the printer is broken. The model may require Canon’s package, or it may no longer be supported by the current Windows release.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for a Canon file or printer package.

Restore or allow the file only if all of the following are true:
- The detection belongs to the Canon installation you intended to install.
- The file is located inside the expected Canon driver package or Windows DriverStore.
- The installer came from Canon or Windows Update.
- The detection is clearly identified as a false positive.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is cnb_0318.dll. If the location is unexpected, scan the computer and reinstall the driver from an official source instead.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when several Windows features are failing or protected system files appear damaged. They are not a primary repair for a missing third-party Canon driver.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands finish.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, test the Canon utility again. If both commands report no integrity violations and the DLL error remains, return to the Canon driver reinstall path. SFC does not specifically repair every third-party driver file.

Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 cnb_0318.dll
Printer-driver support DLLs are not automatically COM or ActiveX components. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide a registration function and are designed to create registry entries for components such as COM servers. A printer support library may not expose that function.
Running the command can produce another error without repairing the driver. If Canon’s installer specifically instructs you to register a component, follow that instruction for the exact package. Otherwise, reinstall the driver instead.
Fix 7: Test for a profile or permission problem
If the Canon driver installs correctly for another administrator account, the original Windows profile may contain stale printer registrations or damaged settings.

- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Select Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Create a temporary local account.
- Give it administrator rights temporarily.
- Sign in to that account.
- Install and test the Canon printer.
If the printer works there, remove the old printer entries and Canon software from the original profile, then reinstall. If the error occurs in every account, the driver package, Windows compatibility, or printer support status is more likely to be the cause.
If the Canon printer is no longer supported
Some older printers do not have a current package for the Windows release you are using. If Canon provides no compatible driver and Windows Update offers none, the DLL error may be a compatibility boundary rather than a missing file that can be safely replaced.

You can try:
- Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device.
- Select Add manually when automatic discovery fails.
- Choose an existing compatible printer port.
- Let Windows search its built-in driver list.
- Print a test page.
A generic driver may provide basic printing but may not support scanning, status monitoring, or Canon-specific utilities. If no supported driver works, replacing the printer may be the practical resolution.
Why downloading the DLL separately is unsafe
A standalone DLL download can have the wrong version, architecture, or dependencies. It can also be modified or bundled with unwanted software. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, the DriverStore, or the Canon application folder can create a new mismatch while leaving the damaged driver registration untouched.
