“The program can’t start because wwanmm.dll is missing from your computer” means Windows or an application cannot load a protected system component. wwanmm.dll is the Microsoft WWAN Media Manager DLL, associated with Windows cellular and mobile-broadband features.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. Repair Windows first, then investigate the modem driver or application that triggered the message.

Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches what happened:
- The error appeared after Windows Update, cleanup software, antivirus activity, or an unexpected shutdown: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- It appears when using Mobile Broadband, a SIM, an LTE modem, or Network settings: update or reinstall the cellular modem driver.
- It appears only in one modem-control utility: repair that utility and its driver from the computer or modem manufacturer.
- Windows Security recently quarantined a system file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The message says “The specified module could not be found”: wwanmm.dll may exist, while another dependency is missing or incompatible.
- The computer has no cellular hardware and Windows otherwise works normally: the missing component may not affect you until a WWAN feature tries to load it.
- The error started after a driver, registry, or system cleanup change: use System Restore.
- DISM and SFC cannot repair the installation: use a matching Windows repair source or perform an in-place repair.
Also confirm whether the computer runs Windows 10 or Windows 11, and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. Older Windows versions have different servicing and recovery options.

What wwanmm.dll is
WWAN means Wireless Wide Area Network. In Windows, it generally refers to cellular connectivity through hardware such as an integrated LTE modem, USB mobile-broadband adapter, or another cellular device.
Microsoft’s cellular architecture documentation describes the related WWAN service as handling modem initialization, network registration, power state, connections, SIM functions, SMS, USSD, and LTE configuration. The file is therefore not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or game-specific DLL.
wwanmm.dll normally belongs in:
%windir%System32
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system components are redirected to:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
%windir%SysWOW64
This does not mean you should copy the file between those folders. The correct file must match the installed Windows build, architecture, language, and servicing state. Microsoft update records also identify Wwanmm.dll as a Windows component.
A missing file does not prove that the cellular modem itself has failed. Conversely, a modem driver problem can cause an application to report a Windows DLL error even when the DLL is present.
Check whether the file is really missing
Before repairing anything, check the normal Windows locations.
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter
%windir%System32. - Search for
wwanmm.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
%windir%SysWOW64.
If you find the file, right-click it, select Properties, and review:
- Digital Signatures, if shown
- Details
- File description
- Company
- File version
A legitimate copy should identify Microsoft-related Windows metadata and have a valid Microsoft signature. A copy with the same filename in a temporary folder, download folder, or unrelated application directory is not automatically malware, but it deserves extra scrutiny.

Do not judge the file by size alone. Historical Windows builds have used different 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and an older version is not interchangeable with the build currently installed.
If the error says “The specified module could not be found”, the named DLL may be present. Windows may instead be unable to load a dependency, or the calling program may be using the wrong architecture.
Fix 1: Install updates, then repair Windows
This is the safest first repair for a missing, corrupted, or mismatched Windows-owned DLL.
Install pending updates
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on it.
- Reproduce the original error.
If the problem began immediately after an incomplete update, this can restore the component without manual file replacement.
Run DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to replace damaged protected files.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish successfully.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the feature or application again.
Do not close the Command Prompt while either scan is working. A successful SFC result should say that Windows Resource Protection did not find integrity violations, or that corrupt files were found and repaired.
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them, restart and run DISM again, then run SFC a second time. For more detail, review:

If Windows Update cannot provide the repair files, DISM may need a matching installation source:

If repeatedly identifying the damaged component and repeating SFC/DISM is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate repair path for this Microsoft component.
Fix 2: Repair the cellular modem driver
Use this fix when the error appears while connecting to a cellular network, opening Mobile Broadband settings, inserting a SIM, or launching the modem manufacturer’s control panel.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Check the device in Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Also check Modems, Ports (COM & LPT), and Other devices.
- Look for a cellular, WWAN, LTE, mobile-broadband, or modem entry.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Review the General tab for a device status error.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
To request a driver update:
- Right-click the cellular device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If that does not help, obtain the correct Windows 10 or Windows 11 driver from the PC manufacturer or modem manufacturer. Use the model-specific package, not a generic DLL package.
To reinstall the device:
- In Device Manager, right-click the modem or WWAN adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package only when you have a replacement available.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the manufacturer’s current driver.
- Restart again and test the connection.
Avoid uninstalling an unknown network device if you cannot identify it or do not have a way to restore connectivity.
When several drivers are stale, finding the correct modem package manually can involve comparing hardware IDs, Windows versions, and manufacturer packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation through the full version is optional. For a cellular device, the manufacturer’s driver remains the definitive source.
Fix 3: Repair the application that triggers the error
If the message appears only in one vendor’s modem utility, do not assume that utility owns wwanmm.dll. It may simply call a Windows component.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Try this sequence:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected modem or connection utility.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only after recording the utility’s connection settings.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the utility.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the latest version supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
If the error occurs in an unrelated application, repair Windows before reinstalling that application. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the normal solution for a missing Windows WWAN component unless the application reports a separate runtime error.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. Do not restore a file simply because its name is wwanmm.dll.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving
wwanmm.dll. - Check the recorded path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if the path, signature, and detection clearly show that it is a legitimate Windows component.
Afterward, run DISM and SFC. Microsoft warns that restoring a threat can cause Defender to detect it again, so do not create an exclusion merely to suppress the warning.

Why you should not download wwanmm.dll
Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may be modified or malicious.
- It may belong to a different Windows build.
- It may have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- It may not match your language or servicing state.
- Copying it can hide the actual component-store or dependency problem.
- Windows may replace or reject it during servicing.
Never copy an unverified DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, official Windows installation media, and the official hardware manufacturer’s driver package.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why regsvr32 is not the fix
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM DLLs. It calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer entry point; it is not a general-purpose repair command.
wwanmm.dll should be repaired through Windows servicing, not registered manually. Running commands such as these can produce another error without fixing the original problem:
regsvr32 wwanmm.dll
If the DLL is the wrong architecture, registration may also make the diagnosis more confusing.
FAQ
Is wwanmm.dll a genuine Microsoft file?
Yes. wwanmm.dll is the Windows WWAN Media Manager component associated with cellular and mobile-broadband functionality.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo I need it if my PC has no cellular modem?
Possibly not for normal everyday use. If Windows has no WWAN hardware and no feature tries to load the component, a missing file may remain unnoticed. You should still repair Windows rather than deleting or replacing the file manually.
Is the DLL part of a game or runtime?
No. It is not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. An application may report the error because it calls a Windows component, but that does not make the application the owner of the DLL.
Which version should I download?
None. Windows must restore the version matching its own build, architecture, language, and servicing state. Historical 32-bit and 64-bit versions are not interchangeable.
What if SFC says it cannot repair the file?
Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again. If it still fails, inspect %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log, use a matching repair source, or proceed to an in-place Windows repair.

Record exactly when it appears: startup, Network settings, modem connection, SIM use, or a particular utility. Then check Device Manager and repair the related modem driver or vendor application. The trigger determines whether the remaining problem is Windows servicing, a dependency, or hardware-driver compatibility.
