Some records associate the file with Canon-related DriverStore folders. That does not mean every copy belongs in System32, and a System32 location alone does not prove that a file is a Windows core component.

First, identify the printer and Windows architecture
Before repairing the DLL, find out whether the affected Canon printer is still used.
Check installed printers
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for Canon printers, including printers marked offline or disconnected.
- Note the exact model name.
Also check Control Panel > Devices and Printers. Older Canon packages can remain there after the physical printer has been disconnected.

- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Record Windows specifications, including whether the system is Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Under Device specifications, check System type.
Use a driver matching both the exact printer model and the installed Windows architecture. Do not replace a possible 32-bit driver component with a random 64-bit DLL, or the reverse.
Fix 1: Install the correct Canon driver
This is the most likely solution when the printer is still in use.
- Open Canon’s official Software and Drivers support page.
- Search for the exact printer model you recorded.
- Select the installed Windows version.
- Choose the appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit package when Canon provides that choice.
- Download the complete printer-driver package, not an individual DLL.
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if the installer instructs you to do so.
- Run the downloaded installer as an administrator.
- Follow the connection instructions.
- Restart Windows when the installation finishes.
If the model is no longer supported, use Windows Update first. Do not substitute a driver for a similar-looking Canon model unless Canon identifies it as compatible.
The repair worked if the printer appears without a warning icon, a test page prints, and the application or startup message no longer requests cnbbr273.dll. If the installer reports that the printer already exists, remove the old printer as described in the next section and run the installation again.

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device if Windows can detect the printer.
- If Windows does not find it, run the Canon installer for the exact model instead.
- Print a test page.
For older Canon packages, use Canon’s supplied uninstall utility if one is available. Removing only the visible printer does not always remove its driver package.
To remove an unused legacy driver:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
control printersand press Enter. - Select any printer, then choose Print server properties from the toolbar.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old Canon driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when that option appears.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove a Canon driver that is still required by another installed Canon printer. Multiple Canon models can leave separate driver packages installed.
Fix 3: Check Windows Update and optional driver updates
Windows may have a compatible printer driver available even when the Canon installer is difficult to locate.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
- Return to Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a relevant printer driver if the printer manufacturer and model match.
After restarting, test printing. If Windows installs a generic driver but the Canon utility still reports cnbbr273.dll, install the complete Canon package instead. A generic print driver may print successfully without restoring Canon-specific scanning, status, or maintenance features.
Fix 4: Check Device Manager for driver problems
Device Manager is useful when Windows sees the printer hardware but the driver is incomplete.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Canon device or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If the device remains broken:
- Right-click it in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Enable Attempt to remove the driver for this device if Windows offers that option.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct Canon package.
Do not use Roll Back Driver unless the error began immediately after a recent driver update and the button is available. A rollback can help with a bad update, but it will not restore a file that was removed by an incomplete installation.

Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined the DLL.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
cnbbr273.dllor a Canon printer package. - Check the detected file path and detection details.
Do not restore the file merely because its name appears in the error. Restore it only if it came from a trusted Canon installer, the package is digitally signed by Canon, and the detection has been confirmed as a false positive. Otherwise, remove the damaged installation and download a fresh package from Canon’s official support site.

If a copy exists in a temporary folder, an unrelated application directory, or another unexpected location and has no valid Canon or Microsoft signature, treat it as suspicious and scan the system.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and sfc can repair Windows component corruption that prevents driver installation or servicing. They may not restore cnbbr273.dll itself because a Canon printer DLL is not normally a protected Windows system component.

- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Canon driver installation.
DISM should be run before SFC. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that only describes protected Windows files; it does not prove that the Canon driver package is healthy.

If the error began directly after a Windows update, Canon driver update, or printer software installation, System Restore may undo the change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed drivers and applications. Afterward, install a compatible Canon package rather than restoring an unverified DLL.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or a file with missing dependencies. Copying a loose file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder often hides the symptom while leaving the damaged printer package in place.
Use Windows Update or the exact Canon printer support page instead.
Do not run regsvr32 on this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLL-based components that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. Printer drivers are normally installed through INF, catalog, and driver-package mechanisms. There is no verified reason to register cnbbr273.dll manually.

Running a command such as this is therefore not a normal repair:

regsvr32 cnbbr273.dll
A registration error does not prove that the file is bad. It usually means the DLL is not a self-registering component.
Do not assume System32 proves it is a Windows file
A printer package can place files in managed driver locations, and a file in System32 is not automatically a Microsoft component. Verify the file’s signature, path, associated printer, and installing package.
Advanced check: inspect installed driver packages
To see whether Windows still has Canon packages installed:
- Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers /files
- Review the output for Canon entries and files associated with the affected printer.
- Record the published name and provider before removing anything.
Do not delete a package simply because its file list looks old. First confirm that no active Canon printer depends on it. Removing the wrong package can disable another printer.

Record these details before seeking further support:
- The complete error message
- The executable requesting
cnbbr273.dll - The path where Windows expects the file
- The Canon printer model
- Windows edition, version, and build
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The file’s current location, if it exists
- Its digital-signature result
- Whether the error occurs at startup, when printing, or when launching a particular program
- Whether the problem followed an update, quarantine event, cleanup, or failed installation
The deciding question is whether the Canon printer is still needed. If it is, reinstall the exact complete driver package. If it is not, remove the obsolete printer and its driver package. In both cases, restoring a downloaded copy of cnbbr273.dll is the least reliable path.
