1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitcheshpd2600t.dll is an old Hewlett-Packard printer-software component, most strongly associated with the HP Deskjet D2600 family. If Windows says hpd2600t.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or remove the HP printer package that installed it rather than downloading the DLL separately.
The file is not a normal Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET library, or game file. Public catalogues describe it as a “VAYU UI” application and report a 32-bit build, version 0.3.3790.1830, measuring about 1.59 MB. Those are catalogue-reported values, not a current Microsoft or HP release specification.

Fix 1: Identify and cleanly reinstall the HP printer package
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
This is the most likely fix when the message appears during printer setup, after a Windows update, when an HP utility launches, or when printing stops working. The DLL normally arrives as part of a driver package, so reinstalling the complete package also restores dependencies and registration.

Check the printer connected to the computer or previously installed on it. The strongest product association is the older HP Deskjet D2600 series, including models such as:

- HP Deskjet D2663
- HP Deskjet D2666
- HP Deskjet D2668
- HP Deskjet D2680
This association is reasonable but not conclusively documented by HP for this exact DLL. Do not confuse these older Deskjet models with the newer HP DeskJet 2600 All-in-One family, which is a different product line.
If you do not recognize the printer, find the program or startup item producing the message. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Startup apps, and look for an HP entry. You can also open Event Viewer by pressing Win + X, selecting Event Viewer, and checking Windows Logs > Application around the time of the error.
2. Remove the old HP software
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for HP, Deskjet, or the printer model.
- Select the related HP printer software.
- Choose Uninstall, then complete the wizard.
- Open Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Choose Remove, then confirm.
- Restart Windows.
If the HP uninstaller is not listed, open Control Panel from the Start menu, select Programs > Programs and Features, and remove the HP printer software there.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Removing only the printer from Settings may leave the driver and its startup components behind. Removing the software first gives the next installation a cleaner Driver Store and application path.
3. Install the correct package
Use HP’s official support site and search for the exact printer model. Open the model’s setup or driver page, select the installed Windows version when prompted, and download the complete printer software package. Alternatively, allow Windows Update to supply a compatible in-box driver.
During setup:
- Run the downloaded HP installer.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator if the normal launch fails.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Finish the installation.
- Print a Windows test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > your printer > Printer properties > Print Test Page.
The repair worked if the HP utility opens without the DLL message and the test page prints. If setup fails again, disconnect the printer, restart Windows, install pending Windows updates, and repeat the clean removal before trying the HP package again.

Optional driver maintenance
Manually finding the correct legacy package can mean hunting through several model pages and guessing which driver is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation and repair require the full version. For this file, however, reinstalling the exact HP printer software remains the definitive fix.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Defender or another security product may have removed the file after detecting it, especially if the HP installation is old or incomplete. Do not restore a DLL blindly. First record the detection name and original path.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent entries for an HP printer component or
hpd2600t.dll. - Open a matching entry to view its detection name, action, and file location.
Protection History retains events for only a limited period, so an older quarantine event may no longer be visible.
If the detection is clearly a false positive and the file came from the original HP installation, use the available Restore action only after confirming the event. Then reinstall the complete HP package from HP rather than continuing to trust the isolated DLL. If Windows identifies the file as malware, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and remove the old HP software.
A file named hpd2600t.dll is not automatically safe merely because it resembles an HP component. Check its location and digital signature by right-clicking the file, selecting Properties, and opening Digital Signatures when that tab is present. A copy in a random download folder or an unrelated application directory deserves additional scrutiny.

Fix 3: Check whether the error comes from a stale startup entry
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If the printer is disconnected or no longer used, the best fix may be removing the abandoned HP utility instead of restoring the DLL.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obsolete HP printer utility temporarily.
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm whether the message disappears.
- If it does, return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall the related HP software.
Do not disable random Windows services just because their names are unfamiliar. If the message appears only when launching a particular old installer, uninstall that installer or locate its original HP package instead.
If you still use the printer, do not leave its startup components disabled until you have completed the clean reinstall in Fix 1.
Fix 4: Check the driver in Device Manager
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Device Manager can reveal whether Windows has retained a damaged HP printer entry, but it usually cannot recreate a missing third-party DLL by itself.
- Press Win + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Find the HP printer or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the exact HP driver from the manufacturer’s support page.
If the device returns with the same warning, open its Properties, select the General tab, and read the device status. A code describing a missing driver, failed start, or incompatible package confirms that the driver—not Windows’ general DLL set—is the problem.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit printer component. The reported copy of hpd2600t.dll is 32-bit, but do not substitute a similarly named 64-bit file. The architecture and dependencies inside the complete printer package determine compatibility.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time
SFC and DISM are useful when several unrelated Windows files fail, Windows Update is broken, or multiple device installations report corruption. They are unlikely to recreate hpd2600t.dll, because it is an HP third-party file and is not normally stored in the Windows component store.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the HP installation.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired protected system files. If SFC says it found corrupt files it could not repair, restart and run it again after DISM completes. If both commands report no problems but the HP error remains, return to the printer-package reinstall rather than repeating SFC indefinitely.

When checking broad Windows corruption manually, it is easy to repeat repairs without knowing what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies; actual repair requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the HP program remains the correct fix for a missing HP-owned component.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not install a printer driver package, restore missing dependencies, or rebuild the Windows Driver Store.
Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 hpd2600t.dll
unless HP documentation for the exact package explicitly requires it. A failed registration message does not prove that the DLL is corrupt. The correct repair is to reinstall the printer software, which installs the driver files and configuration together.
Fix 7: Use System Restore for a recent driver change
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
System Restore is appropriate only when the problem clearly began after a driver installation or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Win + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the HP driver change.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Next > Finish.
System Restore can undo applications, settings, and drivers installed after the selected point. It does not replace a clean reinstall when the printer package itself is obsolete. If the printer is no longer used, uninstalling the abandoned HP software is usually less disruptive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the error appears
The wording helps identify the failure:
- “The program cannot start because hpd2600t.dll is missing” usually means the HP software or an old installer cannot find its expected component.
- “The specified module could not be found” can mean the DLL is absent, but it can also mean one of its dependent DLLs is missing.
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error” can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an incompatible old package.
Common causes include:
| Cause | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| Incomplete HP installation or update | Remove and reinstall the exact HP package |
| Manual printer or driver removal | Clean the old software and reinstall |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection History, then reinstall from HP |
| Wrong or obsolete driver package | Use the exact model’s HP software or Windows Update driver |
| Stale startup utility | Uninstall unused HP software |
| Missing dependency | Reinstall the complete package, not only the DLL |
| Broader Windows corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Unrelated program requesting the file | Identify the executable and investigate its origin |
What not to do
Do not download hpd2600t.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder. A downloaded copy can contain malware, be the wrong version or architecture, lack its dependencies, or simply conceal the damaged printer installation.
Use HP’s official support and setup pages for the exact printer model, or use Windows Update and Microsoft’s printer-driver catalogue. Do not treat an unsupported claim that this file belongs to Visual C++ 2015 as a repair instruction.

FAQ
Is hpd2600t.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Hewlett-Packard printer software. Windows may report the error while starting an HP utility, but that does not make the DLL part of Windows.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no credible evidence that it belongs to any of those runtimes. Installing them is not the first-line repair for this file.
Which printer installed it?
The strongest association is the older HP Deskjet D2600 series, including D2645, D2663, D2666, D2668, and D2680. The exact DLL-to-package mapping is not explicitly confirmed by HP, so identify the model installed on the affected computer before choosing a driver.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Reinstall the complete HP printer package. A 32-bit component may be correct on 64-bit Windows, and copying it to a system folder does not solve dependency or driver-registration problems.
Why does SFC find nothing?
SFC checks protected Windows files. It may correctly report no problem while an HP third-party DLL is missing.

What if reinstalling HP does not work?
Check Event Viewer, the installer’s log, the file path named by the error, and Defender Protection History. If hpd2600t.dll exists but Windows still says the module is missing, a dependency may be absent. A clean removal followed by the correct model-specific package is safer than replacing the DLL alone.
