“The program can’t start because cnbbr318.dll is missing from your computer.” If Windows reports that cnbbr318.dll was not found or could not be loaded, the file is most likely connected to an older Canon inkjet printer driver rather than Windows itself.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver

- Run the downloaded Canon installer as an administrator.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > your printer > Print test page.
If the installer offers Repair, use that before uninstalling anything else. A successful repair should remove the startup or printing error and restore the printer queue.
If the printer is not listed, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. If an old Canon entry appears there, remove it and run the Canon installer again.
Use the driver selected for the exact printer and Windows version. A package for another Canon model may contain similarly named components but is not automatically compatible.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Canon.
- Uninstall the Canon printer software and utilities associated with the removed printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove any obsolete Canon printer entries.
- Select Print server properties if it is available.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old Canon driver and choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that choice.
- Restart again.
- Install the current driver from Canon’s support page.
Windows 10 users can reach the same printer-management area through Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners. If Print server properties is not visible, press Windows key + R, type printui /s /t2, and press Enter. Remove only the Canon driver that belongs to the obsolete printer. Do not remove drivers for printers that are still in use.
If Windows refuses to remove the package because it is in use, stop the print spooler first:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Right-click Print Spooler and select Stop.
- Remove the old driver from Print server properties.
- Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and select Start.
- Restart and reinstall the Canon package.
If the error appears only during startup, open Settings > Apps > Startup and disable an obsolete Canon helper. Also inspect Task Scheduler for clearly identified Canon tasks belonging to hardware that has been removed. Do not disable an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and scan Windows
Security software may quarantine a driver component. Open Windows Security or your installed endpoint product and review Protection history or Quarantine.
Restore the file only when you can verify that the detection is a false positive and that the file belongs to the installed Canon package. Reinstalling the complete Canon driver is safer than restoring an isolated DLL.
Then run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan.
- Start the scan and follow any remediation instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the printer or affected Canon application.
If the error appears in software unrelated to Canon, check the executable that requests the DLL. A legitimate filename can be copied or misused by malware, and a file found outside a Canon driver location should not automatically be trusted.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows Update, driver installation, or system servicing is also failing. They may repair Windows component corruption that prevents a driver from installing correctly, but SFC is not expected to restore every third-party Canon driver file.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when both commands finish.
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store; SFC checks protected Windows system files against that store.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired files, test the Canon installer again. If it reports no integrity violations, that does not prove the Canon driver is intact. If SFC cannot repair some files, repeat the process after restarting and follow Microsoft’s guidance for the CBS log and recovery options.

Fix 5: Use System Restore only after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver update, failed installation, cleanup operation, or software removal and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key, type Create a restore point, and open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected changes, and select Finish.
- Restart Windows and test the printer.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications and drivers installed after the selected restore point. If no suitable point exists, return to the Canon clean-reinstall procedure instead.

An isolated file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different Canon package, or leave the real driver registration and dependencies broken. It may also make future servicing more difficult.
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It applies to DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that cnbbr318.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL, so this is not a routine fix:
regsvr32 cnbbr318.dll
Use regsvr32 only when Canon’s documentation for the specific package explicitly requires it. Otherwise, reinstall the complete driver.

If the error remains
Check these points in order:
- Confirm the printer model and Windows version.
- Remove the old Canon printer and driver package.
- Restart before reinstalling.
- Install the model-specific Canon package rather than a generic driver.
- Check antivirus quarantine again.
- Identify whether the error occurs in a Canon utility, at startup, while printing, or in an unrelated application.
- Scan for malware if the requesting executable is outside a Canon installation directory.
- Use DISM and SFC only when Windows corruption or servicing problems are also present.
For a very old printer, Canon’s current support page may no longer list the required legacy driver. Use original Canon installation media or Canon’s regional support site. Do not substitute a DLL from an anonymous archive.

An old Canon utility, startup helper, or scheduled task may still be running. Remove obsolete Canon software and disable the related startup item, then reinstall only the software required for the current printer.
Can SFC restore this DLL?
Usually not directly. SFC focuses on protected Windows system files. It can repair Windows corruption that blocks driver installation, but the Canon installer is the proper source for a missing Canon driver component.
